A timed bonus is any casino offer governed by a clock: credit you must use within a set window, spins that vanish at midnight, or wagering you must finish within days. Every UK welcome offer now has deadlines, and UK rules stop a casino increasing an incentive just because you hit the qualifying spend sooner. Here is how to read the clocks before they start.
‘Timed bonus’ covers short free play sessions, claim windows, validity periods and wagering deadlines.
Every partner offer has at least one clock, from Ladbrokes’ 23:59 daily claim to 10bet’s 3-day wagering window.
UK rules stop a casino altering or increasing an incentive because you met the qualifying spend sooner than the offer period.
A short deadline on a large bonus means a lot of play in a short time; a smaller bonus or none may suit you better.
Missing a deadline removes the bonus, never your own deposit.

What a timed bonus is
A timed bonus is a promotion where time, not just money, sets the rules. The phrase has two everyday meanings. The narrow one is a short burst of free play: a set amount of credit to use within, say, an hour, keeping some of what is left when the clock stops. The broad one covers any bonus with a deadline, which in practice is all of them.
The narrow kind is rare at UK-licensed casinos today, and none of our partners runs one. The broad kind matters to everyone, because the clock on a bonus often decides whether it suits you at all. You will find timed offers alongside every other kind on our bonus types hub.
The four clocks on a timed bonus
Most casino offers run up to four separate timers. Each one is a significant term, which means it should be shown with the headline offer, not buried in small print.
The ASA’s guidance on gambling free bets and bonuses (opens in a new tab) lists time limits to claim or use an offer among the significant conditions that adverts must make clear. If you can’t find a deadline easily, that is a warning sign in itself.

Timed bonus maths: how much play a deadline implies
A wagering deadline turns a total into a pace. Dividing the wagering by the days available shows how much play the bonus expects, which is the clearest way to judge whether it fits the way you already play.

Two points stand out. First, the pace grows with the size of the bonus, so a bigger deposit means more play inside the same clock. Second, the average cost of wagering rises in step. If the daily figure is more than you would normally play, the bonus isn’t a good fit; take a smaller one or none. Our wagering calculator shows the pace for any amount, and the guide to how to calculate wagering requirements explains the arithmetic.
Never play faster or for longer than you planned just to beat a bonus clock. You can decline a bonus, and your own deposit stays withdrawable throughout.
What the 2026 code says about time-based incentives
On 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission’s updated rewards and bonuses code (LCCP 5.1.1) (opens in a new tab) took effect alongside the 10x wagering cap and the ban on mixed-product offers. As part of the rewrite, the Commission deleted an older clause that said a benefit’s value must not depend on gambling for a pre-determined length of time or frequency, and dropped a proposed replacement about excessive intensity of gambling. What remains is clause 3(c), carried over from the old code: a casino must not alter or increase an incentive if the qualifying activity or spend is reached in a shorter time than the whole period the offer runs for. Our page on time-based incentive rules sets out the background.
In practice this targets designs that reward speed: a bigger prize for hitting a weekly target on day one, or extra spins for clearing a spend threshold within the first hour. Simple deadlines are a different thing. A 7-day validity period or a 3-day wagering window limits how long an offer lasts; it doesn’t change the reward depending on how quickly you qualify, and all five partner offers still use such deadlines.

Hour-long free play: the classic timed bonus
The original timed bonus gave new players a block of credit, such as a few hundred pounds of play, to use within an hour, then let them keep a capped amount of whatever remained, usually after wagering. It made a dramatic headline and a modest real value, because the cap on what could be kept was small and the credit itself was never withdrawable.
This format has largely disappeared from UK-licensed casinos. Age and identity checks before any play, the wagering cap and the transparency rules all work against it. If you see an hour-long free play offer aimed at UK players, check the operator’s licence first using our guide to checking a casino licence, and read about the risks of offshore bonuses.
What happens when a timed bonus runs out
Claim window missed: the offer lapses; nothing is credited.
Validity period ends: unused spins or bonus funds are removed.
Wagering deadline passes: the remaining bonus, and usually any winnings still tied to it, are removed.
Your deposit balance: untouched, and withdrawable at any time.
Before opting in, write down every deadline: claim, validity and wagering.
Work out the daily pace of play the bonus implies, as in the table above.
Compare that pace with how much you normally play; if it is higher, choose a smaller bonus or skip it.
Set a deposit limit and, if useful, a reality check reminder so time doesn’t slip away.
Claim spins inside the window, then play at your normal pace.
If a clock starts to feel like pressure, opt out of the bonus; your deposit stays yours.

Frequently asked questions
What is a timed bonus at an online casino?
A timed bonus is a casino offer whose terms depend on a clock. The narrow meaning is a short burst of free play, such as credit to use within an hour, with a capped amount kept at the end. The broader meaning is any bonus with a claim window, validity period or wagering deadline, which covers nearly every UK offer. Read all the deadlines before opting in. Our bonus expiry guide explains how each kind of time limit works.
Do UK casinos still offer timed free play bonuses?
Hour-long free play offers have largely disappeared from UK-licensed casinos, and none of our partners runs one. Age and identity checks before any play, the 10x wagering cap and the requirement for clear, fair terms all work against the format. Offers like this aimed at UK players are often from unlicensed sites. Check the operator on the Gambling Commission register first, as our guide to telling licensed casinos from unlicensed ones explains.
Is there a time-based incentive ban?
Not in the way it’s often described. When the Gambling Commission rewrote its incentives code from 19 January 2026, it deleted an older clause saying a reward’s value must not depend on gambling for a pre-determined length of time or frequency, and it dropped a proposed replacement. The rule that remains says a casino must not alter or increase an incentive because you reached the qualifying spend sooner than the full offer period. Ordinary deadlines, such as spins valid for 7 days, are not affected. Our page on time-based incentive rules covers the detail.
How long do I have to use a casino bonus?
It depends on the offer. Among our partners, Coral gives 48 hours to accept its spins and 7 days to use them, Ladbrokes needs each daily batch claimed before 23:59 and used within 7 days, Casumo allows 7 days to finish 10x wagering, and 10bet allows 3 days. PlayOJO’s help page says free spins expire after 24 hours. Always check the current terms when you claim. For context, see how long a bonus should last and how these windows compare.
What happens if I miss a bonus deadline?
The bonus or the unused part of it is removed, and so are winnings still tied to unfinished wagering. Missing a claim window means the offer simply lapses. Your own deposit balance is never affected: UK rules say you must be able to withdraw it at any time, even while a bonus is active. If you think a deadline was applied wrongly, contact support in writing. A separate page on why a bonus disappeared lists the most common causes.
Is a 3-day wagering window too short?
It is short, and it suits only people whose normal play already matches the pace it implies. With 10bet’s 100% up to £25, a £25 bonus needs £250 of slots play within 3 days, an average of about £83 a day. A £10 bonus needs £100, about £33 a day. If those figures are above what you would usually play, choose a smaller deposit or skip the bonus. Our page on whether 10x wagering is good helps judge the multiple itself.
Can a casino shorten the deadline after I opt in?
Gambling Commission guidance says operators must not use terms that let them vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has already opted in, except where needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. That covers shortening a deadline you agreed to. Terms must also be clear and available for the full duration of the promotion. If you think terms changed after you joined, raise it with the casino first. The page on whether bonus terms can change after opting in explains your position.
Why do casino bonuses have time limits?
Time limits stop unused bonuses building up as a liability on the operator’s books, and they keep promotions tied to a specific period. They also cap how long bonus restrictions such as maximum bets apply to your account. From a player’s side, deadlines are significant conditions that must be shown clearly with the offer. The risk is feeling pressured to play faster, so plan around the clock rather than chase it. Why bonuses expire goes further.
Do daily free spins count as a timed bonus?
Yes, in the broad sense. Ladbrokes’ offer gives 50 free spins a day for the first 10 days, up to 500 in total at 10p, and each batch has to be claimed before 23:59 and used within 7 days. Miss a day and that day’s spins are gone, though the rest remain available. The value of each batch is fixed, so it doesn’t grow with time spent playing. Our daily free spins page breaks the offer down day by day.
How do I stop a bonus clock pushing me to play more?
Plan the bonus before the clock starts: note each deadline, work out the daily play it implies and compare that with your usual habits. Set a deposit limit and a reality check reminder in your account. If the deadline still feels like pressure, you can decline or forfeit the bonus and keep your deposit.
