How long should a bonus last?

How long should a bonus last? Long enough to use it at your normal pace without lengthening a single session. For free spins and for 10x wagering on a modest bonus, around 7 days is common and workable; 3 days can suit a small bonus, while 24–48 hours is usually just the window to accept an offer, not to use it.

Key takeaways

  • Every bonus has up to four clocks: offer dates, claim window, use window and wagering deadline.
  • Around 7 days to use spins or finish 10x wagering is a fair, common standard.
  • UK spins take at least 2.5 seconds, so £1,000 of wagering at £1 needs 1,000 spins and over 40 minutes.
  • Raising stakes to beat a deadline doesn't lower the average cost; it only raises the swings.
  • 18+, terms apply. Letting a bonus expire is always an option.

How long should a bonus last? The short answer

A good time limit lets you use a bonus in the sessions you would play anyway. If a deadline would push you to play longer, more often or at higher stakes than you planned, it is too short for you, whatever the terms say.

In practice, the most common windows at UK casinos are 7 days to use free spins and 3 to 7 days to finish wagering on a deposit bonus, with 24 to 48 hours to accept or claim the offer in the first place. Our bonus expiry guide covers how each deadline is worded in the terms.

The four clocks that decide how long a bonus lasts

When people ask how long a bonus lasts, they are usually asking about one of four separate deadlines. Each is a significant term that should be shown with the offer.

Casino bonus time limits explained
ClockWhat it coversTypical lengthWhat happens when it runs out
Offer periodDates the promotion is open to new sign-upsWeeks to months, or 'until further notice'New customers can no longer qualify
Claim windowTime to accept or claim the reward after qualifying24–48 hours, or by a daily cut-offThe reward is not credited
Use windowTime to play spins or start using bonus fundsOften 7 daysUnused spins or funds lapse
Wagering deadlineTime to finish any playthroughOften 3–7 days, sometimes longerBonus and its winnings are removed

The glossary entries for claim window and validity period give short definitions of the two clocks that catch people out most often.

How long a bonus actually takes to use: the pace maths

UK slot design rules, in force since 31 October 2021, require at least 2.5 seconds between spins and ban autoplay and turbo modes, as set out in the Commission's responsible product design standard (opens in a new tab). That gives a floor for how long any bonus takes. Real play, with feature rounds and pauses, is slower.

Minimum pure spinning time for common bonuses
Bonus taskSpins neededMinimum time at 2.5 seconds a spin
100 free spins (Coral)100About 4 minutes
50 free spins a day (Ladbrokes)50 per dayAbout 2 minutes a day
80 free spins (PlayOJO)80About 3½ minutes
£250 wagering at 50p (10bet, £25 bonus)500About 21 minutes
£100 wagering at 50p (Casumo, £10 bonus)200About 8 minutes
£1,000 wagering at £1 (Casumo, £100 bonus)1,000About 42 minutes

So the deadlines above are not usually tight in hours of play. The pressure comes from fitting play into specific days. A 3-day window on £250 of wagering is roughly 7 minutes of minimum spinning a day at 50p, while a 7-day window on £1,000 at £1 is about 6 minutes a day. Our wagering calculator will work out the total play for any bonus.

Why betting bigger to beat a bonus deadline doesn't help

Higher stakes finish the wagering in fewer spins, but the average cost of wagering is the same at any stake: total wagering multiplied by the house edge. £1,000 wagered on a 96% slot costs about £40 on average whether you play 1,000 spins at £1 or 200 spins at £5.

What changes is the size of the swings. Bigger stakes make it more likely the bonus balance runs out early, and they put more money at risk per minute. Many bonuses also have a max bet while active; Casumo's is £5. Read why casinos limit bonus bets for the reasons behind that rule, and remember the legal slot limits of £5 a spin (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24).

What a fair bonus time limit looks like

No UK rule sets a minimum expiry period. These benchmarks are our own, based on how long each kind of bonus takes at a relaxed pace.

  • Claim window: at least 24 hours, ideally 48, with the cut-off time stated (for example 23:59).
  • Free spins: around 7 days to use them. Under 72 hours is short for a large batch.
  • Small deposit bonus (up to £25, 10x): 3 days is workable; 7 is more comfortable.
  • Larger bonus (£50–£100, 10x): 7 days or more, since the play needed is £500–£1,000.
  • Daily drip offers: a clear daily claim deadline and a full validity period for each day's spins.

A deadline is also only fair if it is easy to find. The Commission's significant conditions rule, LCCP 5.1.9 (opens in a new tab), requires key terms to be shown prominently and to remain available for the whole promotion.

UK rules on how long a bonus can last and change

  • Time-based incentive rules (restated 19 January 2026): a bonus can't be altered or increased because you hit the qualifying spend sooner than the full offer period. See time-based incentive rules.
  • 10x wagering cap (same date): limits how much play a deadline can demand. See the 10x wagering cap.
  • No changes after opt-in: Commission guidance says operators must not vary or withdraw a promotion for someone who has opted in, except to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour.
  • Your deposit isn't lost at expiry: un-staked deposits remain your property, so only bonus funds and bonus winnings lapse.

Our answer on why bonuses expire explains why time limits exist at all.

How to fit a bonus into your own time limits

  1. Before opting in, note every deadline: claim, use and wagering, with the exact time of day.
  2. Work out the total play needed and divide it across the days you would normally play.
  3. Set a deposit limit and a reality check so sessions stay within your plan.
  4. Use the spins or bonus in short sessions rather than one long one near the deadline.
  5. Check progress in the bonus section of your account each time you play.
  6. If you fall behind, let the bonus expire rather than playing longer to catch up.

When it is better to let a bonus expire

Deadlines are a common reason people play longer than intended. If a bonus is about to lapse and you have reached your budget or your time, letting it go costs you nothing you actually own. You can also opt out of bonuses entirely and play with cash only; see how to opt out of bonuses.

Gambling should stay a paid-for pastime, and over time losses are likely. If you notice a pattern of chasing bonuses or deadlines, the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free and open 24/7, and GamCare's support page (opens in a new tab) offers chat and other ways to talk.

Frequently asked questions

How long do free spins last?

Most UK free spins must be used within a set period after they are credited, and 7 days is common. Coral's 100 spins and each daily set of Ladbrokes' 50 spins are valid for 7 days. There is often a separate, shorter window to accept or claim the spins, such as Coral's 48 hours. Unused spins disappear when the window closes. See our free spins expiry page and when do free spins credit for the timing in more detail.

How long do I have to claim a casino bonus?

It varies by offer, so check the claim window in the significant terms. Coral gives 48 hours to accept its spins after qualifying; Ladbrokes asks you to claim each day's spins before 23:59; 10bet asks for the first deposit within 7 days of signing up; Casumo requires you to opt in. If you miss the window, the reward is usually not credited. Our how to claim guide and why was my bonus not credited cover what to do.

How long do I have to complete wagering?

The wagering deadline is set in each offer's terms. Casumo allows 7 days to wager its bonus 10x; 10bet allows 3 days to wager 10x on slots. Since 19 January 2026, the amount of wagering is capped at 10 times the bonus, but no rule fixes the number of days. Work out the total play first; £250 over 3 days is very different from £1,000 over 3 days. Our wagering requirements guide explains the calculation.

What happens when a bonus expires?

Unused spins, remaining bonus funds and any winnings still tied to wagering are removed. Your own remaining deposit balance stays in your account, because UK rules don't allow un-staked deposits to be confiscated. Winnings from no-wagering spins that were already paid as cash also stay. Expired bonuses usually can't be reinstated. See what happens if I lose my bonus and our glossary entry on bonus forfeiture.

Can a casino extend my bonus time limit?

Sometimes, at the casino's choice, for example when a technical fault stopped you using spins. There is no right to an extension, and support teams generally can't extend a deadline simply because you ran out of time. If a fault was the cause, contact support promptly with dates and screenshots. Our pages on what to do if the casino forgets my free spins and can I get my free spins back explain the options.

Is 3 days enough time to clear a bonus?

For a small bonus, usually yes. 10bet's maximum bonus of £25 at 10x needs £250 of wagering, which is 500 spins at 50p, about 21 minutes of minimum spinning time spread over three days. The same window on a £100 bonus at 10x (£1,000) is much more demanding. If three days doesn't fit your normal routine, choose a different offer or skip the bonus. The 10bet bonus expiry page has the details.

Do bonus expiry times include weekends?

Usually, yes. Bonus time limits are normally written in calendar days or hours from the moment the bonus is credited or claimed, rather than in working days. A 7-day window opened on a Friday evening closes the following Friday evening. Check whether the terms give an exact time, such as 23:59, and which time zone applies. Payment processing times are different, and those often count business days only; see how long do withdrawals take after a bonus.

Does each day's Ladbrokes spins expire separately?

Yes. Ladbrokes' offer gives 50 free spins a day for the first 10 days after qualifying, up to 500 in total. Each day's spins must be claimed before 23:59 that day, and each set is valid for 7 days after it is credited. A day missed is a set of 50 spins lost; it doesn't roll over. 18+, deposit and spend £10 on slots, payment exclusions apply. See Ladbrokes free spins and daily free spins for more.

Can a casino shorten the time limit after I opt in?

Gambling Commission guidance says operators must not vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has already opted in, except where needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. Cutting a deadline after you accepted would normally fall foul of that. Keep a copy of the terms when you opt in. Our answers on can bonus terms change after I opt in and the Commission's right to vary guidance (opens in a new tab) explain the rule.

Why do bonuses expire at all?

Time limits keep the cost of a promotion predictable for the casino and stop unused bonuses sitting on accounts indefinitely. They also mark the point at which wagering either finishes or the bonus lapses. The downside is that a deadline can nudge people into longer sessions, which is why it is worth choosing offers whose windows suit your normal pace. Our dedicated answer why do bonuses expire explores the reasons in more depth.
