How bonus terms are enforced comes down to three layers: the casino's own systems check each condition as you claim, play and withdraw; UK rules limit what a casino may do when a term is broken; and complaints, independent adjudication and the Gambling Commission hold the casino to account. This guide walks through each layer with pound examples.
Most bonus terms are enforced automatically at three points: when you claim, while you play and when you withdraw.
A casino can only rely on terms that were clear and shown up front; 'sole discretion' wording isn't allowed.
Your own deposit balance can be withdrawn at any time, even with a bonus active.
If a term is applied unfairly, complain to the casino first, then take it to its named ADR provider after eight weeks.

How bonus terms are enforced: the short answer
Bonus terms are enforced mainly by software. When you opt in, deposit, spin and ask to withdraw, the casino's account system compares what you did with the promotion's rules and then credits, holds or removes the bonus. A person only gets involved when something is flagged, such as a large win during bonus play or a pattern the terms list as prohibited.
That power has limits. Since the Competition and Markets Authority's 2018 undertakings and the Gambling Commission guidance that followed, a UK-licensed casino has to set out every significant restriction before you sign up, explain any forfeiture in full and leave your own deposit alone. The rest of this guide follows a bonus from claim to cash-out, showing where each term bites, who checks it and what you can do if you think it was applied wrongly. For the clauses themselves, our guide to casino bonus terms explained clause by clause reads a typical set line by line.
The three checkpoints where casino bonus terms are enforced
Picture a bonus passing through three gates. Each gate enforces a different group of terms, so knowing which gate you're at tells you what can go wrong.
Where bonus terms are checked
Checkpoint
Terms enforced here
If a condition isn't met
Claiming
Eligibility (new customer, age, location), opt-in, qualifying deposit, excluded payment methods, claim window
The bonus or spins aren't credited; your deposit stays as cash
Playing
Eligible games, max bet with a bonus active, game weighting, wagering progress, expiry
Bets may be blocked or not counted; unused bonus funds or spins lapse at expiry
Withdrawing
Wagering completed, cap on bonus winnings, identity checks, review of flagged play
Bonus funds and bonus winnings may be removed; your deposit balance is still yours
Most disputes start at the first or third gate. A qualifying deposit made with an excluded e-wallet fails quietly at the first, and the player only notices when no spins appear. At the third, a max cashout or unfinished wagering can shrink what someone expected to take home.
Enforcement when you claim a bonus
At the claim stage the system checks facts it already holds about you: how old the account is, whether you've had a welcome offer before, where you live and how you paid. These checks are yes-or-no, which is why the outcome can feel abrupt.
Payment method. Coral's offer terms exclude Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards. Ladbrokes excludes prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers. 10bet leaves Skrill and Neteller deposits out of its welcome bonus. A deposit through one of these still lands as cash but doesn't trigger the offer; our guide to how payment exclusions work explains the reasons.
Location. PlayOJO's welcome offer is for new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland, so an NI address fails eligibility. Our page on bonuses for Northern Ireland players explains why.
Opt-in. Commission guidance says players must opt into promotions rather than be enrolled automatically. Casumo's welcome bonus needs an opt-in, and skipping it means no bonus. Read how to opt in to a bonus.
Linked brands. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, so one person may not be able to take new-customer offers at both. The terms decide; check them first.
Claim windows. Coral's 100 free spins must be accepted within 48 hours, and each day's Ladbrokes spins must be claimed before 23:59. A missed window is enforced simply by the spins expiring.
Identity sits underneath all of this. Since May 2019, UK casinos have had to verify age and identity before you can deposit or gamble, including with a bonus, so an unverified account can't reach the claim stage at all. See age verification before play.
How bonus terms are enforced while you play
Once a bonus is live, the casino's software logs every bet against it. Three groups of terms do most of the work.
Maximum bet
Casumo's terms cap bets at £5 while a bonus is active. On online slots that sits on top of the legal stake limits: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for 18–24s since 21 May 2025. A 22-year-old is held to £2 by law whatever the bonus says. Some systems stop an over-limit stake at the game; where a bet does go through, the terms set out what happens to winnings from it, and the Commission expects that consequence to be stated in advance. Check the promotion's terms for the exact wording.
Eligible games and weighting
Bonus funds can only be used on the games the promotion lists, and different games may count towards wagering at different rates. 10bet's terms say its bonus must be wagered on slots. A stake on an excluded game may be refused with bonus funds or count for nothing, which is why game weighting is worth checking before you play.
Wagering and expiry
Each qualifying bet is counted towards the target. With 10bet's 100% match, a £25 deposit brings a £25 bonus and a wagering target of 10 × £25 = £250 within three days. If only £180 has been wagered when the three days end, the target hasn't been met, and the remaining bonus is not paid out in part; the terms set what is removed. At a 4% house edge, £250 of slot wagering costs about £10 on average, though any single session can land well above or below that. See wagering requirements explained and casino bonus expiry.
Enforcement when you ask to withdraw
Withdrawal is where many people first meet the terms in full. The casino checks that wagering is complete, applies any cap on bonus winnings and finishes any outstanding identity checks.
10bet caps winnings from its welcome bonus at £1,000. If a good run turned the £25 bonus into £1,300 by the time wagering was complete, the terms limit the bonus winnings you can take to £1,000. Commission guidance bans caps on what you can withdraw from your deposit balance; caps on bonus winnings are a separate matter, set by the promotion's terms, and must be shown clearly as a significant term.
Identity checks are the other common sticking point. The Commission's guidance says a withdrawal request shouldn't trigger requests for information that could reasonably have been asked for earlier, unless another legal duty requires it at that point. Anti-money-laundering duties can still lead to source of funds questions later on.
No-wagering offers pass this gate with fewer checks. PlayOJO pays winnings from its 80 spins as cash, and winnings from Coral's and Ladbrokes' spins carry no wagering, so what remains is identity and the payment method you withdraw to.
UK rules that limit how bonus terms are enforced
A casino's terms form a contract, but UK law and licence conditions decide which parts it may rely on. These are the rules that matter most when a term is used against you.

Irregular play, multiple accounts and discretion clauses
The terms most likely to be enforced by a person rather than a machine cover irregular play, multiple accounts and third-party funding. These clauses exist to deal with fraud, and they lead to the harshest outcomes: voided winnings or a closed account.
The Commission's guidance on terms giving operators undue discretion (opens in a new tab) says wording such as the operator 'may' or 'reserves the right' to void winnings in those situations isn't acceptable, because customers are entitled to know what action will be taken. In July 2025 the Commission fined Taichi Tech, which ran Fafabet, £170,000, partly over a term letting it close accounts or forfeit winnings at its discretion.
In practice, a casino that voids bonus winnings for irregular play should be able to point to the specific prohibited pattern in the terms you accepted and explain how your play matched it. If it can only cite a general clause, raise that in your complaint. Our explainers on what counts as irregular play and whether a casino can void your winnings cover common situations.

None of these needs a judgement call, which is why they're applied automatically and why arguing afterwards rarely changes the result. The disputes worth raising are those where a term was unclear, wasn't shown up front or was applied in a way the wording doesn't support.
What to do if a bonus term was enforced unfairly
Find the exact wording. Save the promotion's terms as they stood when you opted in; dated screenshots help.
Ask which term was applied. Contact support and ask, in writing, which clause was used and how your play breached it.
Make a formal complaint. Use the casino's published complaints procedure; it then has eight weeks to resolve it.
Read the final response. If you're still unhappy, it should name the ADR provider that handles its disputes.
Our guide on how to complain about a bonus covers what to write. Keep every exchange in writing: a saved chat transcript carries more weight than a summary from memory.

Enforcement also runs the other way. Several bodies can act when a casino's bonus terms or adverts fall short, but only some of them look at an individual player's case.

Frequently asked questions
Who enforces casino bonus terms?
The casino enforces bonus terms itself, mostly through automated account checks when you claim, play and withdraw. Staff review cases its systems flag, such as suspected irregular play. Outside the casino, the Gambling Commission sets licence rules on how terms must be written and can fine operators, while ADR providers such as IBAS rule on individual disputes once the casino's own complaints process has ended. The Commission itself doesn't settle individual complaints. Our pages on who regulates casino bonuses and complaints and ADR rules explain each role.
Can a casino change bonus terms after I opt in?
Generally no: Gambling Commission guidance says operators mustn't use terms letting them vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has opted in, unless that's needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. Licence condition 7.1.1 also requires customers to be told about material changes to terms before they take effect. So if the wagering or expiry changed after you joined, ask the casino which version applies to you. See what happens if a casino changes bonus terms and can bonus terms change after I opt in.
What happens if I break a bonus term by accident?
It depends on the term and how the casino's terms say it will respond, which they must state in advance. Some breaches simply stop a bonus from being credited, such as depositing with an excluded e-wallet. Others, such as a bet above the max-bet limit, may lead to winnings from that bet being removed. The casino should explain which term was applied and how. If the response seems out of proportion, use the complaints process. Our page on what happens if I break bonus terms gives more examples, and bonus forfeiture defines the term.
Can a casino keep my deposit if I break bonus terms?
Not as a penalty for breaking bonus terms. Commission guidance says your un-staked deposits remain your property and that you can withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even while a bonus is active. What a casino can remove is bonus money and, where the terms say so, winnings from it. Money already staked and lost is gone, as with any bet. Separately, funds can be held while legal checks such as anti-money-laundering reviews are completed. See can I withdraw my deposit with a bonus active and our bonus withdrawal rules page.
Are bonus terms legally binding in the UK?
Yes, bonus terms form part of your contract with the casino, but only fair and transparent terms bind you. Under section 62 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, an unfair term isn't binding on a consumer, and under section 69 an ambiguous term takes the meaning most favourable to you. Licence condition 7.1.1 requires casinos to meet those standards and to stick to their own terms. Our explainer on whether bonus terms are legally binding covers the detail, and how to spot unfair bonus terms lists warning signs.
Can a casino void winnings for irregular play?
Only if the prohibited play was clearly described in the terms before you played. Commission guidance says operators must specify all prohibited types or patterns of play, mustn't ban play that wasn't set out in advance and must give a full explanation when winnings are lost. Terms that let a casino decide for itself what counts as a breach are treated as unfair. If winnings are voided, ask which clause was applied and how your play matched it. See what counts as irregular play and the glossary entry for bonus abuse.
How do casinos check the max bet rule?
The casino's system records the stake of every bet placed while a bonus is active and compares it with the limit in the terms, such as Casumo's £5 maximum per bet. Some games stop an over-limit stake before it's placed; in other cases the bet is flagged and the terms decide what happens to its winnings. Remember the legal stake limit on online slots also applies: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18–24s. Our casino bonus max bet page and the online slot stake limits rule explain both limits.
What if the bonus terms are unclear?
An unclear term should be read in your favour. Section 69 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says that where a term could have different meanings, the one most favourable to the consumer prevails, and Commission guidance says terms mustn't be unnecessarily complex. If a casino relies on a vague clause, quote the wording back in a written complaint and explain your reading of it. Our guide to how to read a significant terms box shows where the key conditions should appear, and bonus terms must be clear covers the rule.
Can I complain if my bonus was removed?
Yes. Start with the casino's own complaints procedure, which every licensed operator must publish, and give dates, amounts and the term you think was misapplied. The casino has eight weeks to resolve the complaint. If it doesn't, or you disagree with its final response, you can take the dispute to the free ADR provider it names, such as IBAS. Removing a bonus because wagering wasn't finished in time is usually within the terms; removing it over an unclear rule may not be. See why did my bonus disappear and where to complain about a casino.
Do no-wagering free spins have terms that can be enforced?
Yes, though there are fewer of them. No-wagering spins such as Coral's 100 spins after a £10 slots bet, or PlayOJO's 80 spins with a first deposit of £10 or more, still carry eligibility rules, excluded payment methods, a fixed spin value, named or selected games and expiry. Once the spins are played, the winnings are cash under those offers, so there's no wagering, max-bet or bonus-winnings check to fail afterwards. Read how no wagering spins pay out and free spins terms explained line by line.
