What happens if a casino changes bonus terms?

What happens if a casino changes bonus terms? If you have already opted in, a UK-licensed casino generally can’t change or withdraw that promotion for you, unless it needs to stop fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. It can end an offer for new sign-ups or update its general terms with notice, but material changes must be flagged before they take effect.

Key takeaways

  • After you opt in, Commission guidance bars casinos from varying or withdrawing a promotion for you, except to prevent fraud or similar.
  • Material changes to terms must be notified before they take effect, and promotion terms must stay available for the whole promotion.
  • A casino can still close an offer to new players: Coral’s current offer runs to 1 February 2027, Ladbrokes’ until further notice.
  • Keep a dated copy of the terms you accepted; it is your best evidence in a complaint.

What happens if a casino changes bonus terms after you opt in?

The promotion you opted into should stay as it was. Gambling Commission guidance on the right to vary a promotion (opens in a new tab) says operators must not use terms that let them vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has opted in, unless that is needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour.

So if a casino tries to cut your spins, raise your wagering or shorten your deadline after you have signed up, it is on weak ground. If it changes the offer for people who haven’t opted in yet, that is normally allowed. The line between the two is the moment you opt in.

The Commission’s player guide on free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) adds that companies should not change the details of a free bet once you have accepted and started playing. Our promotion and incentive entries define the terms used here.

UK rules that stop casinos changing bonus terms mid-way

Several rules work together:

Taken together, a term that says ‘we may amend or cancel this promotion at any time’ is the kind of wording the guidance warns against. Our guide on how to spot unfair bonus terms lists similar red flags.

Changes a casino is allowed to make

Not every change is a problem. These are generally legitimate:

  • Ending an offer for new customers. Coral’s current welcome spins run from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027; Ladbrokes’ offer runs from 14 November 2025 until further notice. When an offer closes, people who already opted in keep the terms they accepted.
  • Stopping fraud. The guidance allows variation where needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour, such as multi-accounting.
  • Changes forced by new rules. When the 10x wagering cap and mixed-product ban arrived on 19 January 2026, offers had to comply from that date.
  • Stopping bonuses for customers showing strong signs of harm. Operators must stop marketing and new bonus take-up in those cases.

The last point is a safety rule, not a commercial choice, and our page on bonuses and harm indicators explains it.

What the 2026 rules say about time-based bonuses

When the Commission rewrote its incentives code for 19 January 2026, it deleted an older clause saying a bonus’s value must not depend on gambling for a pre-determined length of time or frequency. It kept the rule that a casino must not alter or increase an incentive because the qualifying spend was reached in a shorter time than the whole offer period. The time-based incentive rules page has the background.

This is different from an offer delivered in stages. Ladbrokes’ 50 spins a day for 10 days is a fixed schedule set out in advance; the value of each day’s batch doesn’t change with your play.

Worked example: what a mid-run change would cost you

To show why the rule matters, take a hypothetical case. You opt into a daily-spins offer worth 50 spins at 10p a day for 10 days, and on day 5 the casino tries to cut your remaining days to 20 spins a day. This is an illustration, not something any partner has done.

Hypothetical value of remaining spins before and after a change
Days 5 to 10Spins per daySpin value per dayTotal spin value for 6 days
As accepted50£5£30
After the attempted change20£2£12
Difference30£3£18

Under the guidance, a change like this for someone who has already opted in shouldn’t happen unless it is needed to prevent fraud. If it did, you would have a clear basis to complain and to ask for the original terms to be honoured. Spin values here are stake values; what spins actually return depends on the slot’s RTP and luck.

How to keep proof of the terms you accepted

  1. Before opting in, open the full offer terms, which must be one click away, and save a copy.
  2. Note the date, the offer name and any version number or ‘last updated’ line.
  3. Screenshot the significant terms shown next to the headline offer.
  4. Keep the opt-in confirmation message or email.
  5. If you are told terms changed, ask support which version applied on your opt-in date.

What to do if a casino changes bonus terms against you

Start with the casino’s complaints procedure, quoting the terms you accepted and the guidance on varying promotions. The casino has 8 weeks to resolve a complaint. After that, or after a final response you don’t accept, you can take it to the alternative dispute resolution provider the casino names. IBAS explains how to raise a dispute (opens in a new tab), and registered companies agree to be bound by its decisions up to £10,000.

You can also report the casino to the Gambling Commission, which doesn’t settle individual disputes but uses reports to spot breaches. Our guides on how to complain about a bonus and how to report an unfair bonus cover each step.

Frequently asked questions

Can a casino change bonus terms after I opt in?

Generally no. Gambling Commission guidance says operators must not use terms allowing them to vary or withdraw a promotion for a customer who has opted in, unless needed to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. The terms you accepted should apply until the promotion ends for you. If a casino tries to change them, ask which term it relies on and complain if needed. Our page on can bonus terms change after I opt in adds more detail.

Does the casino have to tell me before changing its terms?

Yes, for material changes. Licence condition 7.1.1 says customers must be notified of material changes to terms before they take effect, and the changes themselves must be fair and transparent under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. In practice that usually means an email, an in-account message or a prompt to accept updated terms. A silent change to a live promotion would conflict with the guidance. Our UK bonus terms must be clear page explains the standard.

Can a casino end a welcome offer early?

It can close an offer to new customers, either at a published end date or with notice, but people who have already opted in should keep the terms they accepted. Coral’s welcome spins run from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027, while Ladbrokes’ offer runs until further notice. If an offer closes the day after you sign up, your claim should still be honoured. See the Coral casino bonus and Ladbrokes casino bonus pages.

What if the terms on the site differ from the advert I saw?

Significant conditions must appear in the advert and with the headline offer, and full terms must be one click away. If an advert left out a key condition, it may breach the advertising code, and the ASA has upheld complaints about missing conditions. Keep a screenshot of the advert. Complain to the casino first, and you can also complain to the ASA about the advert. Our page on significant conditions in ads and the ASA rulings summary explain more.

Did the January 2026 rules change bonuses I already had?

From 19 January 2026, bonus wagering at UK-licensed casinos can’t exceed 10 times the bonus, and promotions mixing products such as betting and casino are banned. Offers had to comply from that date. Any offer taken after then should show 10x or less. If you think older terms were applied to a newer claim, ask the casino to explain. Our page on bonus terms after January 2026 and the 10x wagering cap set out the change.

Can a casino change my free spins game after I accept them?

It shouldn’t change the details of free spins or a free bet once you have accepted and started playing, according to the Commission’s consumer guidance. The eligible games are a significant term set when you opt in. Coral and Ladbrokes list their selected games on the promotion page, and PlayOJO’s spins are on Big Bass Bonanza. If a game becomes unavailable, ask support how the spins will be honoured. See how do I know which slots my free spins are on.

Are bonus terms legally binding?

Fair and transparent terms are binding on both sides, including the casino. Under section 62 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, an unfair term doesn’t bind you, though you can still rely on it if you choose. Under section 69, an ambiguous term takes the meaning most favourable to you. That is why a casino can’t rewrite your promotion at will. Our answer to are bonus terms legally binding explains the tests.

What evidence do I need if the casino changed my bonus terms?

The strongest evidence is a dated copy of the terms you accepted, plus proof of when you opted in. Screenshots of the offer page, the significant terms box and any confirmation message all help, as does the version number or last-updated date on the terms. Save support chats too. Without this, it is your word against the casino’s records. Our guide on how to keep records of bonuses suggests what to save each time.

Who do I complain to if a casino changes terms unfairly?

Complain to the casino first under its published procedure. It has 8 weeks to resolve the complaint; after that, or after a final response you don’t accept, you can go to its named alternative dispute resolution provider, such as IBAS, which is free. The Gambling Commission doesn’t settle individual disputes but welcomes reports of possible breaches. Our guides on how disputes over bonuses are resolved and complaints and ADR rules cover each route.
