What happens if free spins hit a jackpot depends on two things: whether the offer’s terms let that spin win the jackpot at all, and whether a maximum win cap applies. If both are clear, the win is credited like any other free spins win, then paid after the usual account checks.
A jackpot landed on a free spin is normally paid if the game was an eligible game and no rule in the offer terms excludes or caps it.
Many free spins offers run on slots with no progressive jackpot, so the most you can land is the game’s own top prize at 10p a spin.
Maximum win caps, wagering and expiry decide how much of a big free spins win reaches your cash balance.
Large withdrawals may bring extra checks, but UK players pay no tax on gambling winnings.

What happens if free spins hit a jackpot: the short answer
If a free spin lands a jackpot on a game the offer allows, the win is added to your account under the offer’s rules. With no-wagering spins it goes straight to your cash balance; with wagering spins it usually arrives as bonus money that has to be played through before it can be withdrawn. Either way, the casino can only hold back or reduce the win if a clearly published term says so.
In practice, most players never face this question, because the slots chosen for free spins offers rarely carry a progressive prize pool. The casino lists its selected games, and those are usually standard video slots whose biggest payout is a fixed multiple of the stake. So the realistic “jackpot” on a 10p spin is that game’s top prize, not a seven-figure network pot.
This page explains how jackpot wins on promotional spins are handled at UK-licensed casinos. Gambling should be treated as paid entertainment: losses are the likely outcome over time, and a jackpot is a very rare event on any single spin.
Which kind of jackpot can a free spin hit?
The word jackpot covers three quite different things, and the answer changes for each. A fixed top prize is part of the slot’s paytable. A progressive pot grows as players stake money and is paid from a shared fund. A random or linked jackpot is triggered by a separate feature, often a wheel or a mystery event, which may sit on top of the base game.

Big Bass Bonanza: max win 2,100x stake
Can be hit on a 10p spin; top prize scales with stake (£210 at 10p)
Progressive (single game or network)
Mega Moolah: four-tier progressive wheel
Often excluded from spin offers; check the game’s jackpot rules
Linked jackpot family
Age of the Gods: Ultimate Power progressive jackpot
Depends on whether the offer lists the game at all
Jackpot King style random jackpot
Genie Jackpots: Jackpot King progressive
Only possible if the offer’s selected games include it
Does a jackpot on a free spin count? The eligibility test
A promotional spin can only win what the game’s rules and the offer’s terms both allow. Two checks matter. First, is the slot one of the offer’s listed games? Spins are locked to particular titles, so you cannot move them onto a progressive game. Second, does the game’s own help screen say jackpot eligibility depends on stake or on a side bet? Some progressive designs give a better chance of reaching the jackpot feature at higher stakes; the help screen states whether that applies.
A third check sits in the offer terms: a line excluding progressive wins from promotional play. If such a line is there, it must be shown clearly. The Gambling Commission’s fair and transparent terms guidance (opens in a new tab) says operators must treat customers openly, and terms that leave the casino sole discretion over when to apply a rule are treated as unfair.
Maximum win caps on free spins jackpots
A maximum win cap is the commonest reason a large free spins win shrinks. The casino states a ceiling, and anything above it is removed when the spins finish or when wagering is complete. Caps are more common on wagering bonuses and no-deposit spins than on spins you get after a deposit or bet.
Among our partners, the cap we can point to is 10bet’s: its 100% casino welcome bonus up to £25 carries maximum bonus winnings of £1,000. For the spin offers at Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO, the summary terms say there is no wagering on the winnings; check the full terms for any maximum win line before you play. Our casino bonus max win guide covers how these ceilings are worded.

The £100 column is an illustration, not a partner term. It shows why reading the cap matters more on high-volatility slots, where the top prize is many thousands of times the stake.
Free spins jackpot wins with and without wagering
With no wagering free spins, winnings are paid as cash. A £210 top prize on a 10p Big Bass Bonanza spin from PlayOJO’s offer would go to your cash balance, ready to withdraw, subject to any terms on the offer page.
With wagering spins, the win is usually paid as bonus funds. Since 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission rule SR code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) caps wagering at 10 times the bonus. So a £210 bonus win could need up to £2,100 of stakes before it converts. At a 4% house edge, that play costs about £84 on average, leaving roughly £126 if everything goes to the average, and any run of losses could leave far less. Our 10x wagering cap explainer has the full rule.
What happens after a jackpot lands on a free spin
Once the reels stop, the process follows a predictable order. Large wins can take longer at the review stage, but the steps are the same.
The game shows the win and the casino records it against the promotional spin.
The amount is credited as cash (no-wagering spins) or bonus funds (wagering spins), minus anything over a stated cap.
If wagering applies, you play it through within the time limit; if not, the money is withdrawable.
You request a withdrawal to a payment method in your name, normally the one you deposited with.
The casino’s team reviews the request; bigger sums may prompt questions about your account or funds.
Once approved, the payment provider’s own timing applies.
Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ help centres say Visa Fast Funds approval typically takes a couple of hours, then up to 4 hours to reach the bank, with payouts over £2,000 slower. PlayOJO says it processes most payments within a few hours. See how long withdrawals take after a bonus for every partner.
ID and source-of-funds checks on a big free spins win
Your age and identity must already be verified before you can deposit or gamble at a UK-licensed casino, so a jackpot should not trigger a first identity check. What can happen is a request about your finances, either for anti-money laundering reasons or as part of the casino’s duty to look for harm. The Commission says a withdrawal request must not trigger requests that could reasonably have been made earlier, unless another legal duty applies then.
Keep documents ready if your win is large: a bank statement and proof of address usually cover it. Our glossary entries on KYC and source of funds explain each request.
When a casino can refuse a jackpot from free spins
A casino may withhold a win only under terms that were clear before you played. Typical grounds are a game malfunction, a breach of the offer terms (such as holding more than one account), or play the terms specifically prohibited. The Commission’s guidance says prohibited types of play must be spelled out in advance and that a player who loses winnings is owed a full explanation.
A term you were never shown cannot fairly be used to remove a win.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, an unfair term is not binding on the consumer.
If you disagree, complain to the casino first, then take the dispute to its named ADR provider, often IBAS.
UK players pay no tax on gambling winnings, so a jackpot from promotional spins is not income in HMRC’s eyes; our gambling winnings tax page explains why. The odds are the bigger point. A top prize of thousands of times the stake is, by design, one of the rarest outcomes in the game, and the average return on 100 spins at 10p on a 96% RTP slot is about £9.60, not a jackpot.

Our partners’ free spins and jackpot potential
None of our partners’ welcome spins is advertised on a progressive jackpot game. Coral (18+, new players, terms apply) gives 100 free spins at 10p after you deposit and bet £10 on slots, valid 7 days with no wagering on winnings; the offer lists its selected games, so check the promotion page. Ladbrokes (18+, new customers, terms apply) gives up to 500 free spins at 10p, 50 a day for 10 days, after £10 of slots play, again with no wagering.
PlayOJO (18+, new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland, terms apply) gives 80 free spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza with your first deposit of £10 or more, no wagering. That game’s published max win is 2,100x, so the most a single 10p spin could pay is £210. Certain payment methods are excluded at Coral and Ladbrokes; see the Coral free spins and Ladbrokes free spins pages, or browse every question we answer.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
Can you win a progressive jackpot with free spins?
Sometimes, but only if the offer’s spins are on a progressive game and the terms do not exclude jackpot wins. Most free spins offers use standard slots, so the progressive pot is not in play. Where spins are on a jackpot title, the game’s rules may also link jackpot chances to stake size, and a 10p spin sits at the bottom of the range. Read the offer’s eligible games list and the game’s help screen together. Our page on free spins on jackpot slots explains how these offers are usually set up, and progressive jackpot slots lists examples.
Will a casino pay a jackpot won on free spins in full?
It will if no published term limits the win. The usual limit is a maximum win cap, which removes anything above a stated figure, and it must appear in the offer terms before you play. If the spins are no-wagering, the win goes to your cash balance. If wagering applies, it becomes bonus money that must be played through up to 10 times first. Our free spins max win guide shows how caps are worded, and can a casino void my winnings explains when a refusal is allowed.
What is the most a 10p free spin can win?
It is the game’s maximum win multiplied by 10p, minus anything above an offer cap. Published figures put Starburst at 500x (£50 on a 10p spin), Big Bass Bonanza at 2,100x (£210) and Book of Dead at 5,000x (£500). Those figures are the rare ceiling, not the expected result: the average return on a 10p spin at 96% RTP is about 9.6p. For more examples, see how much you can win from 10p free spins and our free spins maths guide.
Do jackpot wins from free spins have wagering?
Only if the offer’s spins come with wagering. On no-wagering spins, such as Coral’s, Ladbrokes’ and PlayOJO’s welcome spins, winnings are paid without a playthrough. On wagering spins, the win is credited as bonus funds and, since 19 January 2026, the requirement cannot exceed 10 times that bonus. A £300 bonus win could therefore need up to £3,000 of stakes, which costs about £120 on average at a 4% house edge. Our wagering requirements guide and wagering calculator help you work it out.
Will a big free spins win trigger extra checks?
It can. Your identity is verified before you can gamble, but a large withdrawal may lead the casino to ask about your source of funds or your affordability, for anti-money laundering or safer-gambling reasons. Commission guidance says a withdrawal should not trigger requests that could reasonably have been made earlier, unless a separate legal duty applies at that point. Keeping your address and bank details up to date speeds things up. Read what a source of funds check is and our verification guide.
Is a jackpot from free spins taxed in the UK?
No. UK players pay no tax on gambling winnings, whether the win came from your own stake, a deposit bonus or promotional spins. The tax burden sits with the operator through remote gaming duty, which rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. You do not need to declare a casino win as income, although money you later invest can earn taxable interest in the usual way. Our pages on whether casino bonuses are taxable and gambling winnings tax go into the detail.
What if the game freezes just as a jackpot lands?
The result is normally decided on the game server the moment you start the spin, so a frozen screen does not usually cancel a win. Reopen the game: most slots finish the interrupted round and show the result. If the win does not appear, contact support with the time, the game name and a screenshot, and ask for the round history. If the casino cites a malfunction rule, it must point to a published term. See what happens if a game crashes during free spins and how to contact support about a bonus.
Can a casino cancel a free spins jackpot for breaking the rules?
Yes, if you broke a rule that was clearly set out in the terms before you played, such as using a second account or someone else’s payment card. The Gambling Commission’s guidance says operators must specify prohibited play in advance, must not keep sole discretion to decide what counts as a breach, and must explain any forfeiture in full. If you think a decision is unfair, complain to the casino, then to its ADR service. Our pages on what happens if you break bonus terms and complaining to IBAS set out the steps.
Why do so few free spins offers use jackpot games?
Mostly because of cost and fairness. Progressive slots put part of every stake into the shared pot, which often means a lower base-game return: published data puts Mega Moolah’s base-game RTP at 88.12%, excluding the jackpot contribution. Casinos also prefer offers whose value they can predict, and a pot that might pay out on a promotional spin is hard to budget for. As a result, spins tend to go on popular standard slots. Our page on why some games are excluded from bonuses and our jackpot slots bonus guide explain more.
Does a jackpot win count towards my deposit limit?
No. A deposit limit caps the money you put in, not what you win, so a jackpot does not use up or reset it. What a large win can change is your play: some people deposit again sooner or raise stakes after a big result. Many casinos offer loss limits, time-outs and reality checks to help keep play steady. If you would like a cooling-off period after a win, you can set one in your account. Read do bonuses count towards deposit limits and our deposit limits guide.
