Multi accounting meaning

Multi accounting meaning, in plain terms: one person opening or using more than one account with the same casino or operator, usually to take a new-customer offer again. UK bonus terms ban it, and the usual result is voided bonus winnings and a closed duplicate account, so it pays to know where the line sits.

Key takeaways

  • Multi accounting means one person holding two or more accounts with the same operator, often to repeat a welcome offer.
  • UK identity checks on name, address and date of birth make duplicate accounts easy for operators to spot.
  • Terms must say clearly what happens to winnings; vague 'we reserve the right' wording is not allowed.
  • Coral and Ladbrokes share one operator, so check the terms before opening new accounts at both.
  • Your own un-staked deposit stays yours even if a duplicate account is closed.

Multi accounting meaning: the short definition

In casino bonus terms, multi accounting is when the same person registers, controls or benefits from more than one account at a single operator. It is listed in our casino bonus glossary because nearly every UK welcome offer is limited to one per person, and a second account is the most common way that limit gets broken.

The term covers more than a deliberate second sign-up. A forgotten old account, an account opened in a partner's name but funded by you, or a fresh sign-up at a sister brand run by the same company can all fall inside the definition, depending on how the operator's terms are worded. That is why the phrase usually sits next to bonus abuse and irregular play in the small print.

Explaining the rule is not the same as finding a way round it. This page sets out what multi accounting is and what happens when terms are broken; it gives no tips for avoiding detection, because those would put your deposit and winnings at risk.

Why casinos ban multiple accounts

A welcome offer is priced as a one-off cost to bring in a new customer. Take a typical spins deal: 100 spins at 10p each is £10 of play. If one person could open five accounts, the same offer becomes £50 of spins for that one person, which is not what was advertised. Operators also have legal duties that depend on knowing exactly who each customer is.

  • Identity and age checks. Since 7 May 2019, online operators must check name, address and date of birth before you deposit or gamble, including with a bonus.
  • Safer gambling. Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion only work if they apply to one account per person.
  • Anti-money laundering. A spread of accounts makes it harder to see where money comes from.
  • Offer rules. Terms such as one offer per household depend on accounts being linked to real people and addresses.

What counts as multi accounting in bonus terms

Wording varies, so read the general terms as well as the promotion page. The table below shows situations that bonus terms commonly address and how they tend to be treated. It describes common wording, not any single operator's rules.

Situations that terms often treat as multiple accounts
SituationUsually allowed? What terms tend to say
Second account in your own name at the same casinoNoOne account per person; duplicates closed and bonuses removed
Account in a relative's name that you fund or playNoThird-party use or funding of accounts is banned
Two adults at one address, each with their own accountOften yes, but offers may be limitedCheck for one-offer-per-household or per-device wording

Reopening a closed accountUsually treated as the same customerWelcome offers are normally for first-time customers only

The sister-brand row matters for two of our partners. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (UKGC account 54743, part of Entain), and the Gambling Commission register lists the trading names on that licence (opens in a new tab). One person may not be able to hold new-customer status at both, so read our answer on whether Coral and Ladbrokes share accounts and the terms before signing up. Our guide to how sister site bonuses work covers the wider pattern.

How operators spot duplicate accounts

Most duplicate accounts are found through the checks every UK operator already runs. The verification data (name, address, date of birth) is matched against existing customers, and payment details are compared too, because a debit card or bank account can only belong to one person. Device and location data may also be used. Our answer on how casinos detect bonus abuse explains the general process, and KYC covers the identity side.

Because these checks run at sign-up and again before withdrawals, a second account rarely goes unnoticed for long. The UK KYC rules mean an operator should ask for documents it needs early, rather than waiting until you try to cash out.

What happens if multi accounting is found

The outcome should be written in the terms in advance. The Gambling Commission's guidance on terms giving operators undue discretion (opens in a new tab) names multiple accounts as one area where customers are entitled to know what action will be taken; wording that says an operator 'may' or 'reserves the right' to withhold winnings is the kind it warns against.

A worked example shows how the money splits. Say someone opens a second account, deposits £10, receives 100 spins worth £10 in total and wins £9.60 from them. The terms will usually void the £9.60 because the offer was for new customers only, and close the duplicate account. Any of the £10 deposit that was never staked remains the customer's property under Commission guidance on un-staked deposits (opens in a new tab), so that part should be returned. What could have been won from staked deposit money depends on the terms and the facts of the case.

If you think a decision is wrong, complain to the operator first, then use an ADR service such as IBAS. Our guide to complaining about a bonus sets out the steps.

  • Bonus hunting: moving between casinos for offers. Legal across different operators; it becomes multi accounting only when one operator's limits are broken.
  • Account restriction: limits placed on an account, sometimes after a duplicate is found.
  • Promotional restriction: a block on receiving further bonuses.
  • GAMSTOP: self-exclusion across all GB-licensed online operators, so a new account cannot get round it.

If you already hold an old account, the simplest path is to contact support and ask whether it can be reopened. Our answers on claiming a bonus on a second account and claiming two welcome bonuses go into the detail.

Our partner offers and the one-account rule

All three offers below are for new customers only, so each can be claimed once per person. Coral's offer (18+, new players, running 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027) gives 100 free spins at 10p each after a deposit and £10 of slots bets, with no wagering on spin winnings; Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify. Ladbrokes gives up to 500 free spins (50 a day for 10 days, 10p each) after £10 of slots play, again with no wagering; prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers deposits are excluded. As both brands share one operator, check the Coral bonus terms and the Ladbrokes bonus page before you register at either.

PlayOJO's offer is 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each on a first deposit of at least £10, with no wagering; it is for new UK customers (not Northern Ireland), only through the designated offer link and can't be combined with other offers. 18+ and terms apply to every offer.

Frequently asked questions

What does multi accounting mean at a casino?

It means one person having more than one account with the same casino or operator. Bonus terms almost always limit new-customer offers to one per person, so a second account opened to take the offer again breaks those terms. Some operators also count accounts in another person's name that you fund or play, and new sign-ups at sister brands owned by the same company. The exact scope depends on the wording, so read the general terms and the promotion page. Our bonus abuse definition shows how the two ideas overlap.

Is multi accounting illegal in the UK?

Usually it is a breach of contract rather than a crime, but it can become fraud if false identity details are used. For most people the practical result is the loss of any bonus and bonus winnings, and closure of the duplicate account, as set out in the operator's terms. Using someone else's identity or bank details is a far more serious matter and can be reported. The question of whether bonus abuse is illegal is covered separately, including where the line between a terms breach and an offence falls.

Can two people in the same house each claim a welcome bonus?

Often yes, if each adult opens their own account with their own identity and payment details, but some offers are restricted to one per household, address, device or IP address. That kind of limit is a significant condition and should be shown clearly with the offer. If you share a home with someone who already has an account, read the terms before signing up or ask support to confirm. Our one offer per household entry explains how those limits are usually written and applied.

Do Coral and Ladbrokes count as the same casino for multi accounting?

They are separate brands but the same operator, LC International Limited, licensed under Gambling Commission account 54743. Because of that, one person may not be able to hold new-customer status at both, and terms may treat an existing customer of one as ineligible for the other's welcome offer. We can't confirm how every case is handled, so check both sets of terms or contact support before registering. Our page on whether Coral and Ladbrokes share accounts covers what is known.

What happens to my deposit if a duplicate account is closed?

Money you deposited but never staked remains yours, according to Gambling Commission guidance, so it should be returned. Bonus funds and winnings made from them are usually removed because the offer was not available to you. Where deposit money was staked, what happens to the winnings depends on the terms and the circumstances, and the operator must explain its decision. If you disagree, complain to the operator and then to an ADR body. Our guide on how bonus terms are enforced walks through the process.

I forgot I had an old account. Is opening a new one multi accounting?

It can be, even if it was an honest mistake, because terms are written around the person rather than intent. The safer step is to contact support, explain that you may have an old account, and ask for it to be reopened rather than registering again. An old account usually means you won't qualify for the welcome offer, as these are normally for first-time customers. Our answer on claiming a bonus on a second account has more detail on how operators handle this.

Can I open a new account if I am self-excluded with GAMSTOP?

No. GAMSTOP applies to every online operator licensed in Great Britain, and operators must refuse service to people who are self-excluded, so a new account should be blocked at the identity check. Self-exclusion lasts for the period you chose and cannot be ended early. If gambling is causing harm, support is free from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, run by GamCare. Our guide to self-exclusion and GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) itself explain how the scheme works.

Does using a VPN count as multi accounting?

Not by itself, but terms often treat hiding your location or identity as irregular play, and a VPN used alongside a second account makes things worse. UK operators must know who and where their customers are, and an offer for UK players may not be available elsewhere. Using a VPN to get round restrictions can lead to voided winnings and a closed account. See can I use a VPN for a casino bonus? for the rules and the reasons behind them.
