Playthrough meaning

Playthrough meaning, in one line: it is the total amount you have to stake before money won with a casino bonus turns into cash you can withdraw. A £20 bonus with 10x playthrough needs £200 of bets. Since 19 January 2026, UK-licensed casinos can't set it above 10 times the bonus.

Key takeaways

  • Playthrough is another name for wagering: the stakes you must place before bonus money can be withdrawn.
  • Multiply the bonus by the multiplier: £30 at 10x means £300 of bets.
  • UK casinos have been capped at 10x the bonus since 19 January 2026.
  • The house edge applies to every bet, so playthrough has an average cost.
  • No-wagering free spins have no playthrough at all: winnings are cash.

Playthrough meaning: the plain-English definition

Playthrough is the amount of betting a casino asks you to do with a bonus before any winnings tied to it can be taken out as cash. The term is mostly used on American and international sites; UK terms usually say wagering requirements, and some say rollover. All three describe the same thing.

It is written as a multiplier. "10x playthrough" on a £15 bonus means you need to place £150 of bets. Each spin or hand counts at its full stake, so a £1 spin adds £1 to your progress whether it wins or loses. The figure is a measure of turnover, not of losses or profit.

Playthrough sits alongside other limits in the same offer: an expiry date, a max bet while the bonus is active, a list of games that count and sometimes a cap on winnings. Reading the multiplier on its own tells you only part of what a bonus will ask of you.

How playthrough works on a UK casino bonus

When you opt in and the bonus lands, the casino starts a counter. Every qualifying bet adds to it until it reaches the target. Most sites show this in a progress bar in the account area, and our guide on how to track bonus progress explains where to look.

While the counter is running, the money is often held in a separate bonus balance. Once the target is met in time, the remaining bonus funds and winnings move into your cash balance. If the time runs out first, the bonus and anything won with it are normally removed.

Games don't all count the same. Slots usually count in full, while roulette, blackjack and live tables often count at a lower rate or not at all. That rate is called the contribution percentage, and it can stretch a 10x requirement a long way if you play a game that only counts at 10%.

Playthrough example with real numbers

Take a 50% deposit match. You pay in £100 and get a £50 bonus with 10x playthrough on the bonus only. The target is 10 × £50 = £500 of bets. At 50p a spin that is 1,000 spins; at £1 a spin it is 500.

Slots return less than they take over time. On a game with 96% RTP, the house edge is about 4%, so £500 of bets costs about £20 on average. That leaves an expected £30 from the £50 bonus. Any one session can land far above or below that figure, and you can lose your whole deposit.

£25£250500£10£15
£50£5001,000£20£30
£100£1,0002,000£40£60

These are long-run averages. A bonus doesn't change a game's odds, and losses over time are likely.

The UK 10x cap on playthrough since January 2026

Under LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab), bonus funds can't be required to be played through more than 10 times. The rule took effect on 19 January 2026 and is covered in our page on the 10x wagering cap.

The Gambling Commission's own example, in its announcement of the promotions changes (opens in a new tab), was a £10 bonus with 50x wagering, which would have meant £500 of play. Under the cap the most that bonus can ask is £100. The same rules banned offers that mix products, such as a sports bet that releases casino spins.

Before the cap, multipliers far above 10x were allowed, as the Commission's 50x example shows, and some terms applied the multiplier to deposit plus bonus. If you see a playthrough figure on an older review that runs past 10x, it no longer describes a UK-licensed offer.

Where playthrough appears in bonus terms

Look for phrases like "wager the bonus 10x", "10x playthrough", "rollover requirement" or "bonus must be turned over". Under ASA and CAP guidance on significant conditions in promotions (opens in a new tab), a requirement like this should be clear before you sign up, not buried several clicks away.

  • The multiplier: how many times the bonus must be staked.
  • What it applies to: bonus only is normal now; check the wording.
  • Time limit: for example 3 or 7 days to finish.
  • Counting games: which games count and at what percentage.
  • Max bet: the largest stake allowed while the bonus is active.

Our checklist of bonus terms that matter runs through each of these clauses in turn.

Frequently asked questions

What does playthrough mean at a casino?

Playthrough means the total value of bets you must place before bonus money or winnings from it can be withdrawn. It is shown as a multiplier, so a £40 bonus with 10x playthrough needs £400 of bets. The casino tracks this as you play, and only bets on games that count are added. If you don't reach the target before the bonus expires, the bonus and its winnings are usually removed. Our wagering requirements guide has more worked examples, and the wagering calculator does the sums for you.

Is playthrough the same as wagering requirements?

Yes, playthrough and wagering requirements are the same thing under different names. Playthrough is the more common word on American sites, while UK casinos tend to write "wagering" and occasionally "rollover". All three describe how many times a bonus must be staked before it becomes cash. The UK 10x cap applies whatever word the terms use. If a page uses a term you don't recognise, our casino bonus glossary lists the alternatives, and how to calculate wagering requirements shows the maths step by step.

How do I work out playthrough?

Multiply the bonus amount by the multiplier in the terms. A £20 bonus at 10x gives £200 of playthrough. If a game counts at 50%, each £1 bet only adds 50p, so you would need £400 of bets on that game instead. Then check the time limit: £200 in 3 days is a very different ask from £200 in 30 days. For bonuses where the multiplier applies to deposit plus bonus, add the two first. Our calculation guide walks through each case.

What is the maximum playthrough allowed in the UK?

The maximum is 10 times the bonus for UK-licensed casinos, in force since 19 January 2026. The rule is in the Gambling Commission's social responsibility code 5.1.1, which every licensed operator must follow. A £50 bonus can therefore ask for no more than £500 of bets. Offers with 35x or 50x figures belong to the period before the cap, or to sites that don't hold a UK licence and so don't carry its protections. See our page on the 10x wagering cap and the wider UK bonus rules.

Does playthrough cost money?

On average, yes, because every bet carries the house edge. At 96% RTP you lose about 4p in every £1 staked over the long run, so £300 of playthrough costs about £12 on average. That cost comes out of the bonus value, so a £30 bonus at 10x is worth roughly £18 before any luck either way. Individual results vary hugely and losses are likely over time. Our expected value guide and our page asking whether a casino bonus is worth it explain this further.

Do free spins have playthrough?

Some do and some don't, so check the terms. No-wagering free spins pay winnings straight into your cash balance, which is how the current Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO welcome spins work. Other spins pay out as bonus funds that then need to be wagered, and the 10x cap applies to that amount. If you win £8 from spins with 10x wagering, you would need £80 of further bets. Our page on free spins wagering and the question does the 10x cap apply to free spins go into detail.

Can I withdraw before finishing playthrough?

You can usually withdraw your own deposited cash, but doing so normally cancels the bonus and any winnings made with it. UK casinos that signed undertakings with the Competition and Markets Authority agreed that players must be able to withdraw their own money during bonus play. What you give up is the bonus. Read the withdrawal clause before you opt in, and see what happens to a bonus when you withdraw and can I withdraw with wagering still pending.
