Wagering progress meaning

Wagering progress meaning: how much of a bonus's wagering requirement you have completed so far, usually shown in your account as a bar, a percentage or a pounds figure such as '£120 of £250'. It counts the qualifying stakes you have placed, adjusted for game weighting, and tells you how far you are from the bonus converting to cash.

Key takeaways

  • Wagering progress measures stakes placed towards the target, not money won or lost.
  • Only eligible bets count, and some games may add only a share of each stake.
  • Bets above the max bet, or on excluded games, can break the terms rather than just not counting.
  • Watch the deadline as well as the percentage: unfinished wagering at expiry usually removes the bonus.
  • Since 19 January 2026 the target can't exceed 10x the bonus.

Wagering progress meaning, simply put

A wagering requirement says how much you must stake before bonus funds become withdrawable. Wagering progress is the running total towards that figure. If a £20 bonus carries 10x wagering, the target is £200; after £50 of qualifying spins, your progress is £50 of £200, or 25%. When it reaches 100% within the time limit, the bonus converts; see bonus conversion for that step.

Progress counts stakes, not results. A £1 spin that wins £5 and a £1 spin that loses both add £1 (if the game counts in full). That surprises people who expect the bar to track their balance. It is one of the entries in our casino bonus glossary that is easiest to misread, so the sections below go through what moves it and what doesn't.

What counts towards wagering progress

How different bets typically affect wagering progress
BetTypical effect on progressWhere to check
Eligible slot at 100% contributionFull stake countsOffer terms, game list
Game with reduced contributionOnly a share counts, e.g. £1 at 10% adds 10pContribution table in the terms
Excluded gameNothing counts; may also breach the termsExcluded games list
Bet above the max betMay not count and can void the bonusMax bet clause
Spins inside a free spins roundNo new stake, so nothing addedGame help screen
Bets placed after expiryNothing; the bonus has goneExpiry clause

The percentage a game contributes is explained under contribution percentage and in our game weighting guide. Table and live games often count for less or not at all; see do table games count towards wagering? and does live casino count towards wagering?. The Commission's glossary of terms (opens in a new tab) also defines a 'mixed wager', one drawn from both the deposit and bonus balance, and how that counts is set by each operator's terms.

Worked examples of wagering progress

10bet: £25 bonus, 3 days

A £25 deposit brings a £25 bonus with 10x wagering on slots, so the target is £250 within 3 days. Spread evenly, that is about £83.33 of slots stakes a day. At 50p a spin that is roughly 167 spins a day; at £1 a spin, about 84. After day one, progress at that pace would read £83.33 of £250 (33%). At a 4% house edge, the £250 of play costs about £10 on average.

Casumo: £100 bonus, 7 days

A £200 deposit brings the maximum £100 bonus, wagered 10x, so £1,000 within 7 days, with a £5 maximum bet while the bonus is active. At £1 a spin that is 1,000 spins, or about 143 a day. If £100 of that were placed on a game counting at 10%, it would add only £10 of progress; the Casumo wagering page has the eligible-game detail.

These figures show what the terms require, not a plan to follow. If the stakes needed are more than you would normally play, the bonus may not suit you; when to say no to a bonus covers that decision.

How to read a wagering progress tracker

  1. Open the bonus or promotions section of your account (the name varies by casino).
  2. Find the active bonus and note the target, the amount completed and the expiry date and time.
  3. Check which balance your stakes are coming from; cash and bonus must be shown separately.
  4. Compare the completed figure with your game history if it looks wrong.
  5. Screenshot the tracker before contacting support about a problem.

Our answer on how to check bonus wagering progress goes through where the tracker tends to sit at different sites, and how to keep records of bonuses explains what's worth saving.

Why wagering progress doesn't move

  • The game is excluded or weighted at a low percentage.
  • You are playing from a balance the offer doesn't count, so check the terms.
  • Your stake is above the offer's maximum bet (Casumo's is £5 with an active bonus); our casino bonus max bet page explains why these limits exist.
  • You are inside a free spins round, which adds no new stakes.
  • The bonus has expired or was never activated; see pending bonus.

If none of these explains it, contact support. Terms must clearly specify prohibited play in advance, and an operator should explain any decision to remove winnings.

Wagering progress meaning after the 10x cap

Since 19 January 2026, social responsibility code 5.1.1 has capped wagering at 10 times the bonus, so the target on any new bonus can be no more than ten times its value. The Commission's news on safer and simpler promotions (opens in a new tab) gave the example of a £10 bonus with 50x wagering needing £500 of play; under the cap the most it could need is £100. Our 10x wagering cap page has the details.

Your own deposit balance is never subject to wagering: Commission guidance says you can withdraw it at any time, even with a bonus active. The Commission's consumer page on free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) adds that you should always be able to tell whether you are playing with your own money or bonus funds. A reality check or deposit limit helps keep a wagering target from stretching your budget.

Frequently asked questions

What does wagering progress mean?

It means how much of a bonus's wagering requirement you have completed so far. Casinos usually show it as a bar, a percentage or a figure like £120 of £250. It counts the stakes you place on eligible games, adjusted for each game's contribution, not how much you win or lose. When it reaches 100% before the deadline, the bonus converts to cash. Our bonus conversion entry explains what happens at that point, and wagering requirements explained covers the basics.

Do winning spins count more towards wagering progress?

No. Progress counts the amount staked, so a £1 spin adds £1 whether it wins £10 or nothing, assuming the game counts at 100%. Winnings change your balance, not your progress. This is why a big win early on doesn't shorten the requirement, and why a losing run doesn't set it back. Some games count only a share of each stake. Our contribution percentage entry shows how weighting changes the figure added per bet.

Why has my wagering progress stopped going up?

The usual reasons are playing an excluded or low-contribution game, staking above the maximum bet, being inside a free spins round that adds no new stakes, or the bonus having expired. Check the offer terms and your game history first. If the tracker still looks wrong, contact support with screenshots and times. Breaching some terms, such as the max bet, can void the bonus rather than just pausing progress. Our bonus mistakes guide lists the common traps.

Does wagering progress carry over if I take a new bonus?

Generally no. Each bonus has its own target, and progress on one doesn't usually count towards another. Some casinos only let one bonus be active at a time and hold others in a queue until the first is finished or forfeited. If you cancel a bonus partway through, the progress and the bonus funds are normally lost. Read the terms before stacking offers. Our bonus queue entry explains how several bonuses are lined up.

How fast do I need to make wagering progress?

Fast enough to finish before the bonus expires. Divide the target by the days allowed: 10bet's £250 over 3 days is about £83 a day, and Casumo's maximum £1,000 over 7 days is about £143 a day. If that is more than you would normally play, the bonus probably doesn't fit your budget, and declining it is a sensible choice. Never increase your play just to finish a requirement. See how to budget with a casino bonus.

Can I see wagering progress on a casino app?

Usually, yes. Most UK casinos show bonus details in the account or promotions area of the app as well as the website, though the layout may differ. If you can't find it, the help centre or live chat can tell you where it is or confirm the figure. Keep a screenshot if you plan to raise a query. Our answer on whether free spins work on the app covers related app questions.
