Bonus conversion meaning: the moment bonus funds, or the winnings made from them, move from your bonus balance into your withdrawable cash balance, usually once the wagering requirement is complete. Some offers cap how much can convert, some remove the bonus stake itself, and no-wagering spins convert straight away.
Conversion is when bonus money becomes cash you can withdraw.
It normally happens automatically once wagering is complete, within the time limit.
A conversion cap (max winnings) limits how much can move across; 10bet's is £1,000.
On average, wagering costs roughly wagering × house edge, so less than the full bonus tends to convert.
No-wagering spins skip the step: winnings are paid as cash immediately.

Bonus conversion meaning explained
UK casinos must show your own money and bonus money as separate balances. Bonus conversion is the step that moves money from the second to the first. Until it happens, bonus funds can be played on the games the offer allows but can't be withdrawn; after it happens, the converted amount behaves like any other cash in your account. See our bonus balance entry for how the two balances are displayed.
Operators word it in different ways: 'bonus released', 'bonus converted to cash', 'bonus funds become withdrawable'. The Gambling Commission's glossary of terms (opens in a new tab) defines wagering requirements as any requirement to make wagers of a set value for funds to become withdrawable, which is exactly the condition that conversion follows. It sits in our casino bonus glossary alongside playthrough, which means the same as wagering.
How bonus conversion works, step by step
You deposit and receive bonus funds, which sit in the bonus balance.
You play eligible games; each stake counts towards the wagering target (some games may count less or not at all).
When the target is reached within the time limit, the remaining bonus balance converts to cash, up to any cap.
If the time limit passes first, the bonus and its winnings are usually removed under the terms.
Whether the bonus amount itself converts depends on the bonus type. With a non-sticky bonus, your cash is used first and the bonus only comes into play if the cash runs out. With a sticky bonus, the bonus amount is removed at conversion and only the winnings above it move across. Our sticky vs non-sticky guide shows both with numbers.

Two cautions. First, these averages hide a wide spread: many attempts end with the bonus balance at zero and nothing to convert, and a few end well above average. Second, the time limit matters. 10bet's 3 days for £250 of wagering means about £83 of stakes a day; anyone unlikely to play that much shouldn't count on converting. Our wagering calculator and guide to calculating wagering requirements run the numbers for other amounts.
Conversion caps and max winnings
Some bonuses limit how much can convert, often written as 'maximum bonus winnings', 'max conversion' or max cashout. 10bet's welcome bonus caps bonus winnings at £1,000; anything above that when wagering finishes would not convert. A cap is a significant term, so it should appear with the offer, not only in the full terms.
Since 19 January 2026, the Commission's social responsibility code 5.1.1 has capped wagering at 10 times the bonus, which sets the ceiling on how much play conversion can require. Before that, 35x or 50x was common: a £10 bonus at 50x would have needed £500 of play, against £100 now. Our 10x wagering cap page and the Commission's code text for SR code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) give the full wording.
Terms must also be clear and available for the whole promotion, and the offer can't be changed against you once you have opted in. If a conversion doesn't happen when the terms say it should, raise it with support and then use the complaints route in our how to complain about a bonus guide.

Frequently asked questions
What does bonus conversion mean?
It means bonus money, or winnings made with it, moving from the bonus balance into your cash balance so it can be withdrawn. It usually happens automatically once the wagering requirement is met within the time limit. Some offers cap how much can convert, and with sticky bonuses the bonus amount is removed at that point, leaving only winnings above it. No-wagering offers convert at once. Our bonus balance entry explains how the two balances are shown.
Is bonus conversion automatic?
At most UK casinos, yes: once the wagering target is reached, the remaining bonus balance moves to cash without you doing anything. Some sites show a button to claim or release it instead, so check the bonus section of your account. If conversion doesn't happen when your progress shows 100%, contact support with screenshots. Terms must be clear and available for the whole promotion, so the method should be written down. Our guide on how to check if a bonus is active shows where to look.
How much of a bonus usually converts?
On average, less than the full amount, because wagering costs money. A rough guide is the bonus minus wagering multiplied by the house edge. For 10bet's £25 bonus at 10x, that is £250 of wagering, costing about £10 at a 4% edge, leaving around £15 on average. Real results spread widely: often nothing converts, sometimes more than average does. These are long-run averages, not predictions. Our expected value of a casino bonus guide works through more examples.
What is a conversion cap?
A conversion cap limits how much bonus money can become cash, whatever you win while wagering. It is often called maximum bonus winnings or max cashout. 10bet's welcome bonus caps bonus winnings at £1,000, so anything above that when wagering ends would not move across. A cap is a significant term and should be shown with the offer. It never applies to your own deposit balance, which you can withdraw at any time. Read more under max cashout.
What happens if wagering isn't finished before the bonus expires?
The unconverted bonus, and any winnings still in the bonus balance, are usually removed under the terms. Your own deposit balance is not affected. That is why time limits matter as much as the multiplier: Casumo allows 7 days for 10x wagering, while 10bet allows 3 days. Before opting in, work out the daily stakes needed and whether that fits your normal budget. Our bonus expiry guide covers time limits in detail.
Do free spins winnings need converting?
Only when the spins carry wagering. With no-wagering spins, such as Coral's 100 spins, Ladbrokes' daily spins and PlayOJO's 80 spins, winnings are paid straight to your cash balance, so there is nothing to convert. With spins that do carry wagering, winnings go to the bonus balance and convert once the requirement, capped at 10x since 19 January 2026, is met. Check the offer terms to see which applies. Our free spins winnings entry explains both.
