Coin value meaning: the size of each coin a slot uses to build your stake, such as 1p or 10p. Your total bet per spin is the coin value multiplied by the number of coins played. On free spins the coin value is fixed by the casino, which is why offers say '10p per spin'. Max win multiples, stake limits and bonus bet caps all work on the total stake, not the coin.
Total stake = coin value × coins per line × lines (or the game's bet multiplier).
Free spins are locked to a set stake: 10p per spin on the Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO offers.
Spin value = spins × stake: 100 spins at 10p is £10 of spins.
Max win multiples apply to the total stake: 500x on a 10p spin is £50.
UK stake limits and bonus max-bet rules are measured in pounds per spin, whatever the coin display shows.

Coin value meaning and the stake formula
Older slot designs build each bet out of coins. You choose a coin value, sometimes a number of coins per line, and the game multiplies them by the paylines in play. On a 10-line slot, a 1p coin with one coin per line makes a 10p stake; a 2p coin with two coins per line makes 40p. Many newer games skip coins and let you pick a total bet directly, but the maths underneath is the same.
Some games show your balance and wins in coins or credits rather than pounds. A win of '500 coins' at a 1p coin value is £5. The game's settings usually let you switch the display to cash, which makes stakes and wins easier to follow. Our casino bonus glossary has related entries for game round and session.
Coin value on free spins offers
Free spins from a casino offer are set up at a fixed stake that you can't change. Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all set theirs at 10p per spin. That stake is what decides the face value of the offer: spin value = number of spins × stake per spin.
Face value of partner free spins offers at 10p per spin
A slot's maximum win is quoted as a multiple of the total stake, not the coin. So the stake on a free spin caps what that spin can pay. Using published figures for three well-known slots, at 10p per spin:
Starburst (NetEnt): 96.09% RTP, low volatility, 500x maximum, so £50 on a 10p spin.
Big Bass Bonanza (Reel Kingdom, distributed by Pragmatic Play): 96.71% RTP, high volatility, 2,100x maximum, so £210.
Book of Dead (Play'n GO): 96.21% RTP, high volatility, 5,000x maximum, so £500.
Averages tell a different story from maximums. 100 spins at 10p on a 96% RTP game return about £9.60 on average, and most sets of spins come nowhere near the top prize. A casino offer may also add its own max win cap on top of the game's. Check the game's help screen for the RTP of the version you're playing.
Coin value, stake limits and the bonus max bet
UK stake limits count the total stake per spin in pounds. Since 9 April 2025, online slots have been capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over, and since 21 May 2025 at £2 for those aged 18 to 24. The Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) says stakes within a single game cycle count towards the limit. A display showing '50 coins' doesn't change the pound figure behind it.
Bonus terms add their own ceiling. Casumo's welcome bonus allows a maximum of £5 per bet while the bonus is active. The casino bonus max bet page explains how those rules sit alongside the legal limits, and online slot stake limits covers the law itself.
Coin values shown on symbols
Some slots put a value on special symbols, such as a cash prize printed on a bonus symbol. Those values scale with your stake: at a 10p free spin the printed amounts are small, and at £1 they're ten times larger. Where a game displays them in coins, convert at the coin value. The free spins round entry explains how bonus features use the stake of the spin that triggered them.
Game rules and paytables must be available before play under the Commission's remote technical standard RTS 3 (opens in a new tab), so the paytable is the place to check how symbol values are worked out.
Terms related to coin value
Minimum stake: the smallest total bet a game accepts.
RTP: the long-run return that turns spin value into an average return.
Selected games: the slots where the fixed-stake spins can be used.
Expected value: the average worth of a set of spins after the house edge.
Coin value on our partner spin offers
All three of these offers set the spin value at 10p. Coral: deposit (certain methods excluded) and bet £10 on slots for 100 free spins on selected games, valid 7 days, no wagering on winnings. Ladbrokes: spend £10 on slots for 50 free spins a day for 10 days (up to 500), claimed before 23:59 each day, no wagering. PlayOJO: first deposit of £10 or more for 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza, winnings paid as cash, Northern Ireland excluded.
All are for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply. The fixed stake keeps the cost of the offer known to the casino; it doesn't improve the odds of any spin. For the averages behind these figures, read free spins maths.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between coin value and bet size?
Coin value is the size of one coin; bet size is the total you stake on a spin. On a coin-based game the two are linked by the number of coins and lines: a 1p coin across 20 lines with one coin per line is a 20p bet. Many modern slots show only the total bet, which is the figure that matters for stake limits, max-bet rules and max win multiples. Our stake entry explains the total bet in more detail.
Can I change the coin value on free spins?
No. Casino free spins are credited at a fixed stake, set in the offer terms, and the game locks the bet controls while you play them. Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all fix theirs at 10p per spin. Once the free spins are used up, you can change the stake for normal play with your own money, within the UK limits. The question page what stake are free spins played at explains why offers fix the stake.
How much is 100 free spins at 10p worth?
£10 at face value: 100 spins × 10p. That's the total stake the casino is covering, not the amount you'll win. At a 96% RTP, the average return is about £9.60, but any one set of spins can return far less or, rarely, much more. With no wagering, as on Coral's offer, winnings are paid as cash. The page is 100 free spins good puts that figure in context.
Does a bigger coin value improve my odds?
No. RTP and volatility are properties of the game, and they're the same whether you stake 10p or £5. A bigger coin value only scales the size of wins and losses. Raising stakes to chase a bigger prize means more money at risk per spin, while the house edge stays the same. That's one reason the UK limits stakes at £5 per spin for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. The house edge entry explains the long-run cost.
Why does my slot show coins instead of pounds?
Some games default to a coin or credit display, a habit inherited from land-based machines. The amounts are the same money expressed in coins, so multiply by the coin value to get pounds: 300 coins at 2p is £6. Most games let you switch to a cash display in the settings, which makes it easier to keep track of spending. The guide to how to budget with a casino bonus has more on keeping play in pounds.
Do max win caps use the coin value or the total stake?
The total stake. A slot's maximum win, such as Starburst's 500x, means 500 times the whole bet on that spin, so on a 10p free spin it's £50. A casino offer may also set its own max win in pounds, which applies on top of the game's limit. 10bet's welcome bonus, for instance, caps bonus winnings at £1,000. Our page on free spins max win covers both kinds of cap.
