Game round meaning

Game round meaning, in short: a game round is one complete play of a casino game, starting when you stake and ending when the result is settled and any win is paid. On a slot it is usually one spin, plus any features that spin triggers. UK rules call it a game cycle and use it to set minimum speeds and maximum stakes.

Key takeaways

  • A game round runs from placing the stake to settling every win or loss.
  • UK regulators call it a game cycle; free spins triggered in-game sit inside it.
  • Online slot rounds must take at least 2.5 seconds; other casino games 5 seconds.
  • The £5 and £2 slot stake limits apply per game cycle.
  • If a round is interrupted, UK standards say you should not be unfairly disadvantaged.

Game round meaning and the UK game cycle

A game round is the unit every casino game is built from. You commit a stake, the game produces an outcome, and the round closes once your balance has been updated. On roulette that is one spin of the wheel; on blackjack it is one hand, including any splits or doubles; on a slot it is one spin and everything that spin sets off.

The Gambling Commission's responsible product design standard (RTS 14) (opens in a new tab) uses the term game cycle, which its guidance describes as running from pressing start until all money staked or won has been lost or made available to collect. In practice the two terms mean the same thing, and both sit in our casino bonus glossary.

What one game round includes on different games

One game round by game type
GameA round startsA round endsUK minimum time
Online slotPressing spinBase result plus any triggered feature is settled2.5 seconds
Roulette (RNG)Confirming betsBall result and payouts5 seconds
Blackjack (RNG)Placing the opening betAll hands, splits and doubles settled5 seconds
Offer free spinStarting the credited spinThat spin's result is settled2.5 seconds (as a slot spin)

One slot spin that triggers a free spins feature or a bonus round is still one game round, because no extra stake is needed and the feature is part of the original result. RTS 14 guidance exempts such bonus games that need no extra stake from the time-to-result requirement, so a feature can play out faster than 2.5 seconds per free game. A retrigger extends the same round.

How UK rules control the speed of rounds

Since 31 October 2021, online slot rounds must last at least 2.5 seconds from the start of one game to the start of the next, and autoplay, turbo and slam-stop features are banned. From 17 January 2025 those rules were extended to other online casino games, with a 5-second minimum per round for games such as roulette and blackjack. Our page on slot game design rules has the full timeline.

Speed matters for cost. At the slot minimum, a player could fit up to 1,440 rounds into an hour. At 20p a round that would be £288 staked, with an average cost of about £11.50 at a 4% edge. Most people play more slowly, but the sum shows why the pace of rounds, as well as the stake, drives what a session costs.

Game rounds and the slot stake limits

The £5 limit for over-25s and the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds apply per game cycle, not just to the opening stake. The Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) says further stakes within a cycle count towards the limit, so a slot can't take £5 to spin and then ask for more to open a feature in the same round. See online slot stake limits.

What happens if a game round is interrupted

Connections drop and apps crash. The Commission's interrupted gambling standard (RTS 10) (opens in a new tab) says operators' policies must not systematically disadvantage customers. Its guidance sets out the usual outcomes:

  • If the game had already received your stake and you could no longer affect the result, the result stands and any win is paid.
  • If a single-stage round was interrupted before an outcome was generated, the stake goes back to your balance.
  • For multi-stage games such as blackjack, the operator should take reasonable steps to restore the last state so you can finish.
  1. Reopen the same game; many slots resume an unfinished round automatically.
  2. Check your game history for the round and its result.
  3. If the stake or win is missing, contact support with the date and time.
  4. If it is not resolved, follow the casino's complaints process and then ADR.

Game rounds in casino bonus terms

Bonus terms use rounds in a few ways. Offer spins are counted as individual rounds: 100 free spins means 100 rounds at a fixed 10p. Wagering is counted round by round, and terms may say that a round started with bonus funds must be completed under bonus rules. A max bet applies to each round. What happens to a round still open when an offer expires is set by each offer's terms, so read the expiry clause; a round whose result is already fixed should still be honoured. See free spins round for how offer spins differ from an in-game feature.

Frequently asked questions

What does game round mean in a casino?

A game round is one complete play of a game: you stake, the game produces a result, and the round ends once any win is paid or the stake is lost. On a slot that is normally one spin, including any feature the spin triggers. UK regulators use the term game cycle for the same idea and apply rules on speed and stake size to it. Our slot game design rules page explains how the rules apply round by round.

Is a free spins feature part of the same game round?

Yes, when it is triggered by a normal paid spin. The feature needs no extra stake and its winnings are part of the result of that spin, so the whole thing is one game round or game cycle. That is why UK guidance exempts these bonus games from the time-to-result rule. Free spins credited by a casino offer are different: each is its own round. Read can free spins trigger the bonus round? for how the two interact.

How long must a game round last in the UK?

At least 2.5 seconds for online slots, measured from the start of one round to the start of the next, under rules in force since 31 October 2021. For other online casino games, such as RNG roulette and blackjack, the minimum is 5 seconds since 17 January 2025. Autoplay and features that speed up results are banned. Games can finish sooner than the minimum but can't start the next round early. See slot game design rules.

What happens to my stake if a round is interrupted?

It depends on how far the round got. Under the Commission's interrupted gambling standard, if the result was already fixed, it stands and any win is paid; if a single-stage round stopped before a result was generated, the stake is returned. Multi-stage games should be restored so you can finish. If something looks wrong, check your game history and contact support. Our guide on how to complain about a bonus covers next steps.

Do stake limits apply per round or per spin?

Per game cycle, which is the regulator's term for a round. For a normal slot spin the two are the same thing. The difference matters when a game offers extra stakes within one round: those count towards the same £5 or £2 limit. So a single round can never cost more than the legal limit in total. Our stake entry explains how bonus max bet rules sit on top of these limits.

Is one free spin the same as one game round?

For casino offer spins, yes. Each credited free spin starts a separate round at the fixed stake, usually 10p, and is settled before the next one. If one of those spins triggers the slot's own feature, the feature is part of that spin's round. So 100 offer spins are at least 100 rounds, sometimes with features inside them. Our free spins round entry explains how the two kinds of free spins differ.

What happens to an unfinished round when a bonus expires?

The offer's terms decide this, so read the expiry clause before you start a long feature near the deadline. As a general principle, a round whose result has already been generated should be settled and any win credited to the right balance; contact support if a feature was cut off or not paid. A casino can't simply keep a stake from a round that never produced a result. Our guide on bonus expiry covers time limits in UK welcome offers.
