UK online slot stake limits cap each spin at £5 if you are 25 or over and £2 if you are 18 to 24. The £5 limit started on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. This page explains how the limits work, what counts as a slot, and how they combine with the max-bet rules in casino bonus terms.
Online slots are limited to £5 per game cycle for players aged 25+ (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 (since 21 May 2025).
The limits are a condition on every remote casino licence and apply only to reel-based online slots, not to roulette, blackjack or other casino games.
A bonus max-bet rule sits on top: you must stay within whichever limit is lower.
Lower stakes mean more spins to clear wagering, but the average cost of a wagering requirement depends on the total wagered, not on the spin size.
Typical casino free spins at 10p are far below both limits.

What the UK online slot stake limits say
The limits come from the Gambling Act 2005 (Operating Licence Conditions) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, which add a new condition to every remote casino operating licence. The Gambling Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sums up the effect: the most an individual may stake per game cycle on an online slot is £5 if they are aged 25 or over, and £2 if they are aged 18 to 24.
Because the limit is a licence condition, it applies to every operator offering online slots to players in Great Britain, including licences issued before the regulations took effect. It sits alongside the rest of our UK casino bonus rules and the older slot game design rules on autoplay and spin speed.

What a 'game cycle' means for the stake limit
The limit is set per game cycle rather than per click. The regulations define a game cycle as running from the moment a player starts a game until either all the money staked has been lost or all winnings have been delivered or made available to collect. If a game offers further staking opportunities inside the same cycle, they count towards the same limit.
The Commission's guidance works through scenarios. In one, a 27-year-old stakes £2 at the start of a cycle; the game may then offer further stakes in that cycle of up to £3, bringing the total to £5, but nothing more. In another, a player who is offered a prize can accept it, ending the cycle, or turn it down to gamble for a bigger prize. Because the player isn't asked to stake any additional money in that choice, the limit isn't breached.
The guidance doesn't separately address bonus rounds or free spins features inside a slot, so check a game's help screen for how its features work. It also repeats the existing rule that at least 2.5 seconds must pass between the start of one game cycle and the next, a requirement set out in the Commission's responsible product design standard, RTS 14 (opens in a new tab).
Which games the stake limits cover
The limit applies to online slots, which the regulations define as casino games that are reel-based and played online. 'Reel-based' is wider than it sounds: it covers games that display moving or changing images or text, whether on visual reels or by other means, where you can win a prize based on the resulting arrangement. That catches classic three-reel games, Megaways slots and most themed video slots.
The guidance states that the limits don't apply to other casino games, such as roulette or blackjack. Those games have their own design rules, including a minimum of five seconds per game cycle since January 2025, but no stake cap under this regulation. Our table games bonus page explains how bonuses usually treat them.

Why the UK capped online slot stakes
Online slots are fast, continuous games, and before 2025 there was no stake limit at all online, while high-street machines had been capped at £2 since 2019. The white paper's concern was that very high stakes on slots could lead to large losses in short periods, and that young adults were a group at particular risk. The lower £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds reflects that concern.
The limit doesn't change a slot's return to player or house edge; it limits how much can be lost on each spin. At £5 a spin, 100 spins put £500 at stake; at £2, the same 100 spins put £200 at stake. With a 96% RTP, the average cost would be about £20 and £8 respectively, though any one session can differ widely. Our RTP glossary entry explains why these are long-run averages.
Stake limits and bonus max-bet rules
Most deposit bonuses have their own maximum bet rule, and it sits on top of the legal limit. Whichever figure is lower is the one you must keep to. For a player aged 25 or over, a bonus that allows £5 per bet matches the legal limit on slots. For an 18 to 24-year-old, the legal £2 limit is lower, so the bonus allowance makes no difference on slots.
Casumo's welcome offer is a useful example. Its terms set a maximum of £5 per bet while a bonus is active. A 30-year-old playing slots can stake up to £5; a 22-year-old can stake no more than £2, whatever the bonus says. The Casumo max bet page covers that offer's terms in full.

Breaking a bonus max-bet rule can lead to bonus winnings being removed under the offer's terms. The legal limit works differently: operators must stop further staking once your band's limit is reached in a game cycle.
How stake limits change the maths of clearing wagering
Lower stakes don't change the total you need to wager, only how many spins it takes. Take Casumo's maximum bonus: a £200 deposit brings a £100 bonus, and 10x wagering means £1,000 of bets within 7 days. At £5 a spin that is 200 spins; at £2 it is 500. With the 2.5-second minimum per spin, 500 spins need roughly 21 minutes of play at the very least, and realistically much longer.
The average cost depends on the total wagered, not the spin size. £1,000 of slot bets at a 4% house edge costs about £40 on average, whether that is 200 spins of £5 or 500 spins of £2. Smaller stakes do make results less extreme from session to session. Our guide on how to calculate wagering requirements shows the method for any offer, and the 10x wagering cap page explains the limit on wagering itself.

Free spins and the stake limits
Casino free spins are almost always set at a fixed stake well below both limits. All three of our partners' spin offers use 10p spins, so 100 spins are £10 of play and the stake limit never comes into it. Free spins also can't be resized: you play them at the value the casino sets. Our page what stake are free spins played at explains spin values, and the coin value entry covers how a spin's total stake is built up.
Where the limit can matter is after the spins. If no-wagering spins pay out in cash and you go on to play with that money, each spin must still respect your band. Lower stakes stretch the same balance over more spins, but they don't change the average cost per pound wagered.
How to check which stake limit applies to you
Make sure the date of birth on your account is correct; it is verified when you sign up.
If you are under 25, expect slots to cap your stake at £2 per game cycle.
Open the bonus terms and find the maximum bet while a bonus is active.
Use the lower of the two figures as your ceiling on slots.
Contact support if the stake options don't match your age band.
The guidance doesn't spell out how operators move a customer from the £2 band to the £5 band at 25. In practice, the verified date of birth on the account is what operators go on, which is one reason age verification before play matters. The question can under-25s claim bonuses covers the bonus side.
What the online slot stake limits don't cover
Table and live games. Roulette, blackjack and other casino games have no stake cap under these regulations.
Deposit amounts. The limit is per game cycle, not per day or per deposit. Deposit limits are a separate tool you set yourself.
Losses over time. Many small stakes can still add up; the limit slows losses but doesn't stop them.
Northern Ireland and unlicensed sites. The licence condition applies to operators licensed in Great Britain. Players in Northern Ireland or on unlicensed sites don't get the same protection.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum stake on online slots in the UK?
It is £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over, and £2 per game cycle for players aged 18 to 24. The £5 limit took effect on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. Both are conditions on every remote casino licence in Great Britain. Bonus max-bet rules can set a lower figure but never a higher one. Our UK casino bonus rules hub lists the related promotion rules.
Do the stake limits apply to roulette and blackjack?
No. The Gambling Commission's guidance says the limits are for online slots only and don't apply to other casino games such as roulette or blackjack. Those games have their own design rules, including a minimum of five seconds per game cycle since January 2025, but no stake cap under the 2025 regulations. Bonus terms may set their own max bet on any game. See can I use a bonus on roulette for how offers treat table games.
Can a casino bonus let me bet more than £5 a spin?
No. The legal limit applies whatever a bonus says, so the most any player can stake on an online slot is £5, or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. A bonus max-bet rule can only be the same or lower. Casumo, for example, sets a £5 maximum per bet while a bonus is active, which matches the legal limit for players aged 25 and over. Our casino bonus max bet page explains how those rules work.
Why is the limit £2 for under-25s?
Because the government judged young adults to be at higher risk of gambling harm. The 2023 white paper proposed consulting on a stake limit of £2 to £15, with a lower £2 or £4 option for young adults, and the government chose £5 and £2 in February 2024. The £2 limit applies to players aged 18 to 24 and started on 21 May 2025. The question can under-25s claim bonuses covers how it affects offers.
Does the stake limit change how long wagering takes?
It changes the number of spins, not the total wagered. A £100 bonus with 10x wagering needs £1,000 of bets: 200 spins at £5 or 500 at £2. With at least 2.5 seconds per spin, 500 spins take a minimum of about 21 minutes. The average cost at a 4% house edge is about £40 either way. Our guide on how to calculate wagering requirements shows the working for any offer.
Do free spins count towards the stake limit?
Casino free spins are set at a fixed value chosen by the operator, usually 10p, which is far below both limits. Our partners' spin offers all use 10p spins, so the limit doesn't affect them. The Commission's guidance doesn't separately address in-game bonus features, so check a slot's help screen for how its own free spins round works. Our page how do free spins work explains the basics.
What is a game cycle?
It is the period from when you start a game until all the money staked has been lost or all winnings have been delivered or made available to collect. The stake limit applies to the whole cycle, so if a game offers extra stakes within one cycle, they count towards the same £5 or £2. A choice to gamble a prize for a bigger one doesn't breach the limit, because no new money is staked. See our game round glossary entry.
When did the online slot stake limits start?
The £5 limit for all adults started on 9 April 2025, and the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds followed on 21 May 2025. The government had announced the limits on 23 February 2024 and originally expected them to begin in September 2024. Before that, there was no stake limit on online slots at all. Our history of UK bonus rules places the change alongside other reforms.
Do the limits apply to slots in Northern Ireland?
The limits are a condition of Gambling Commission licences, and the Commission's rules cover Great Britain. Northern Ireland has its own gambling law and no full online gambling framework, so players there shouldn't assume they are covered by the same protections. Some offers, including PlayOJO's welcome spins, exclude Northern Ireland altogether. Our page on bonuses for Northern Ireland players explains the position.
Are online slot stake limits the same as on fixed-odds terminals?
They are similar in size but come from separate rules. B2 machines in high-street betting shops, often called fixed-odds betting terminals, have had a £2 maximum stake since 1 April 2019. Online slots had no limit until April 2025, when the £5 limit began, followed by £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds in May 2025. Our slot game design rules page covers the other limits on online slots.
