UK age verification before play

UK age verification before play means an online casino has to confirm your age and identity before you can deposit, gamble or use a bonus, and before you can try its free-to-play demo games. The rule has applied since 7 May 2019. This page explains what is checked, how bonuses fit in, and why ID shouldn't be sprung on you at withdrawal.

Key takeaways

  • Since 7 May 2019, online operators must verify your age and identity before you deposit or gamble, including with a free bet or bonus.
  • Free-to-play demo versions of gambling games are also locked until your age is verified.
  • The minimum details checked are your name, address and date of birth, usually through databases first and documents only if needed.
  • An operator can't make ID a condition of withdrawing if it could reasonably have asked for it earlier.
  • The old 72-hour window for completing age checks after someone had started gambling has gone.

What the UK age verification before play rule says

The Gambling Commission's age and ID verification guide (opens in a new tab) puts it plainly: online gambling businesses must ask you to prove your age and identity before you gamble. The checks cover three things: that you are 18 or over, that you are who you say you are, and whether you have self-excluded. They must be completed before you can deposit money or gamble with it, and that includes gambling with a free bet or a bonus.

In the licence conditions, LCCP 17.1.1 on customer identity verification (opens in a new tab) requires operators to obtain and verify information to establish a customer's identity, including name, address and date of birth, before the customer is allowed to gamble. A second part of the same condition says that before you deposit, the operator should tell you what ID documents or other information it may need, when it may need them and how to provide them. Both are among the UK casino bonus rules that apply from the moment you sign up.

When age verification before play began: timeline

The current rule replaced a looser system. Before May 2019, operators had 72 hours to complete age checks, which meant someone could open an account, deposit and gamble before their age had been confirmed. The Commission announced the change on 7 February 2019 in its release on new rules to make online gambling fairer and safer (opens in a new tab), and the rules took effect three months later.

Why age checks have to come first

There are two reasons. The first is protecting children: under the 72-hour system, an under-18 could in theory deposit and gamble before being caught, and free-to-play demo games let children practise gambling-style games without any check at all. The second is fairness. The Commission had seen cases where players were only asked for ID when they tried to withdraw, so a winning customer could find their money held while a losing one had never been asked anything.

Putting the checks at the start fixes both problems at once. Nobody under 18 should reach a real-money game or a demo, and the operator can't use ID as a reason to delay paying out winnings it was happy to accept bets for. Self-excluded customers are also caught before they can play, which links the rule to the national GAMSTOP scheme.

How online age and ID checks work

For most people, verification happens in seconds without any upload. Operators first run database checks, typically against credit reference agency records and the electoral roll, using the name, address and date of birth you enter. If those details match, you are verified. If they don't, the operator asks for documents, such as a passport, driving licence or a recent household bill. A selfie may be requested if fraud is suspected.

  1. Enter your legal name, home address and date of birth exactly as they appear on official records.
  2. Wait for the automatic database check, which usually runs as soon as you submit the form.
  3. If asked for documents, upload clear photos of photo ID and, where requested, proof of address.
  4. Check the account for a confirmation that verification is complete before trying to deposit.
  5. Only then make a qualifying deposit or opt in to a welcome offer.

PlayOJO's help centre (opens in a new tab) gives a concrete example. It accepts a passport, driving licence, ID card or utility bill, uploaded through its own upload tool rather than by email, aims to verify within 12 hours, and asks customers to contact support if they've heard nothing after 48 hours. For Coral and Ladbrokes, the help centres explain the current process. Our guide to verifying your casino account covers common document problems, and why casinos ask for proof of address explains that request.

Age verification and casino bonuses

For bonuses, the rule sets the order of events. You can't make a qualifying deposit or play with bonus funds until verification is complete, so an offer with a short claim window effectively starts once you're verified. If the database check fails and you need to upload documents, factor that time in before relying on a deadline such as 48 hours to accept spins.

There is no legitimate way to claim a bonus at a UK-licensed casino without verification, which is why pages promising a casino bonus without verification should be treated with caution. A site that lets you deposit and play without any check is unlikely to be licensed in Great Britain, and you'd lose the protections that come with a licence. Our question page can I get a bonus without ID explains the risks.

A worked example

Say you sign up for an offer of 100 free spins at 10p after a £10 slots bet, worth £10 in spins, with 48 hours to accept them. If your details pass the database check straight away, nothing changes: you deposit, bet £10 and accept the spins. If the check fails and the document review takes 12 hours, you still can't deposit during that time, so the qualifying bet and the 48-hour window come later. The value is the same either way; only the timing moves. Checking that your details match your bank and electoral records before you register avoids most delays.

Free-to-play demo games need age checks too

Since May 2019, customers must be age-verified before they can use free-to-play versions of gambling games. Demo slots on a UK-licensed casino site are therefore behind the same wall as real-money play. The rule also applies to free games that offer real prizes: the casino apps from Coral and Ladbrokes list free-to-play games in their app store descriptions, and those are only open to verified adults.

This has a practical side for bonus users. You can't try a slot in demo mode before deciding whether to use your free spins on it unless you have already passed verification. Our free-to-play bonus page explains how free-to-play promotions work once you're in.

ID at withdrawal: what operators can and can't ask

The rule doesn't mean you will never be asked for anything again. Operators have separate duties under anti-money laundering law and the social responsibility code, and the Commission's guide on why gambling businesses want to know about your finances (opens in a new tab) explains that you may be asked for bank statements or other evidence of source of funds as you gamble more. What the rules prevent is using a withdrawal request to trigger requests for information that could reasonably have been asked for earlier, unless another legal obligation requires it at that point.

A business also can't confiscate your money because you didn't verify within a time limit. PlayOJO's help page says documents may be requested after a first withdrawal request and that limits may apply until verification is complete; if that happens, the operator should explain why the request is being made at that stage. If you feel a request is being used to delay a payout, our page on why a withdrawal was declined and the bonus withdrawal rules explain your options.

Your verified age and the slot stake limits

Age verification matters after sign-up too. Since 2025, online slots have a stake limit of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. In practice, the date of birth on your verified account is what places you in one band or the other. A bonus with a £5 maximum bet doesn't override the £2 limit if you are under 25. Our page on online slot stake limits covers the detail, and can under-25s claim bonuses answers the most common question.

What the age verification rule doesn't cover

  • Northern Ireland. The Gambling Act 2005 and Commission rules cover Great Britain. Players in Northern Ireland shouldn't assume the same protections apply; see bonuses for Northern Ireland players.
  • Affordability. Age and ID checks confirm who you are, not what you can afford. Financial vulnerability checks are a separate rule.
  • Unlicensed sites. Offshore casinos that don't verify players are outside the UK system altogether, with no Commission protection if something goes wrong.
  • Land-based venues. Premises follow their own rules, including the 'Think 25' approach adopted from 30 August 2024.

  • Coral Casino: deposit (certain types excluded) and bet £10+ on slots for 100 free spins at 10p (£10 in spins). Accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings. Runs 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027. See Coral verification.

Coral and Ladbrokes don't count deposits by PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe or prepaid cards, among others. The same company runs both, so check whether you can hold new accounts at each. Bonuses don't change the odds, and gambling should only ever be paid for out of money you can afford to lose.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK casinos have to verify my age before I play?

Yes. Since 7 May 2019, online gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain must verify your age and identity before you deposit or gamble, including with a free bet or bonus. The checks also cover whether you have self-excluded. Most are done instantly through database checks using your name, address and date of birth. Our guide to verifying your casino account walks through the process step by step.

Can I claim a casino bonus before verifying my account?

No. Because verification must happen before you deposit or gamble, you can't make a qualifying deposit or play bonus funds and free spins until it's complete. If a database check fails, the bonus effectively waits until your documents are approved. Sites advertising bonuses with no verification are unlikely to be UK-licensed. The question do you have to verify before a bonus covers the timing in more detail.

Why can't I play demo slots without verifying?

Because the Gambling Commission's rules require customers to be age-verified before they can use free-to-play versions of gambling games. The rule took effect on 7 May 2019 to stop under-18s from practising gambling-style games on licensed sites. It also covers free games that offer real prizes. Once your account is verified, demo games open up. Our page on free-to-play bonuses explains how those promotions work for verified players.

What details are checked for age verification?

At minimum, your name, address and date of birth. Operators usually check these against credit reference agency data and the electoral roll first. If that doesn't confirm who you are, they ask for documents such as a passport, driving licence or a recent utility bill, and occasionally a selfie where fraud is suspected. Checks also confirm you aren't self-excluded. See why casinos ask for proof of address for more on document requests.

How long does casino age verification take?

Database checks usually take seconds. If documents are needed, timings depend on the operator: PlayOJO's help page, for example, says it aims to verify within 12 hours and asks customers to contact support if there's no answer after 48 hours. Other operators publish their own guidance in their help centres. Our page on how long casino verification takes explains what can slow it down and how to avoid common rejections.

Can a casino ask for ID when I withdraw?

Only in limited cases. A withdrawal request must not trigger requests for information that could reasonably have been asked for earlier, unless another legal obligation requires it at that point. Operators may still need source-of-funds evidence under anti-money laundering law as your play increases, and they should explain why. A business can't confiscate your money for failing to verify within a time limit. The bonus withdrawal rules page sets out your rights.

What was the old 72-hour rule?

Before 7 May 2019, online operators had up to 72 hours to complete age checks, which meant customers could deposit and gamble before their age was confirmed. Underage gambling could happen during that window, and some players were only asked for ID when they tried to withdraw. The Commission removed the window so that checks happen first. Our history of UK bonus rules puts this change in the wider timeline.

Does my age affect which bonuses I can use?

Every UK casino bonus requires you to be 18 or over and verified, but your age also sets your slot stake limit: £2 per spin if you are 18 to 24 and £5 if you are 25 or over. A bonus max-bet rule can't raise that limit. Low-stake offers such as 10p free spins are unaffected. The question can under-25s claim bonuses explains how the two rules interact.

Can 18-year-olds claim casino bonuses in the UK?

Yes, once their age and identity are verified, provided they meet the offer's own terms. Slot play is limited to £2 per spin until they turn 25, which matters for deposit bonuses with higher max-bet rules but not for typical 10p free spins. Advertising rules also stop gambling ads from showing people who are or seem under 25 in most settings. Our page can 18-year-olds claim casino bonuses has the details.

Is a casino that doesn't check ID safe to use?

It is very unlikely to be licensed in Great Britain, because verification before play is a licence requirement. Unlicensed sites don't have to offer GAMSTOP, fair terms, withdrawal protections or independent dispute resolution, so you would have little recourse if a payout were refused. Check any site on the Commission's public register before you sign up. Our guide to offshore casino bonus risks explains what you would give up.
