Irregular play meaning: it is the phrase casinos use for betting during a bonus that breaks the offer's play rules, such as staking above the maximum bet, using excluded games or placing bets that cancel each other out. If a casino finds irregular play, it can usually remove the bonus and the winnings made with it, as long as the rule was clear.
Irregular play means bets during a bonus that break the offer's play rules.
The most common trigger is a stake above the bonus max bet, such as Casumo's £5 limit.
Playing excluded games or opposite bets with bonus funds are other usual examples.
The rule must be written clearly in the terms before you opt in.
The usual result is losing the bonus and its winnings, not your own deposit.

Irregular play meaning in bonus terms
Irregular play is a catch-all clause about how you bet while a bonus is active. Where bonus abuse is mostly about who claims an offer and how, irregular play is about the bets themselves. The clause normally lists examples and says the casino may void the bonus and related winnings if they occur. Our question page on what counts as irregular play gives a short answer.
The rules exist because a bonus is priced on the assumption that it is played on the games and at the stakes the casino expects. Bets outside those limits change the casino's cost, so the terms treat them as a breach.

The wording differs between casinos, so treat this as a guide to what to look for in the terms, not a definitive list.

Casumo's welcome offer is a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, wagered 10x within 7 days, with a maximum of £5 per bet while the bonus is active. 18+, new customers, opt-in required; game, play and payment restrictions apply.
Deposit £200 and you get the full £100 bonus, which needs £1,000 of wagering. At the £5 limit that is at least 200 bets. A single £6 spin breaks the max bet rule, and under typical irregular play wording that could see the bonus and any winnings from it removed. The 7-day window doesn't change the limit. Separately, UK law caps online slot stakes at £5 a spin for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, as the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains; for younger players, the £2 limit is the lower one.
The average cost of £1,000 of play at a 4% house edge is about £40, so the bonus has an expected value of roughly £60 before any rule breach. One oversized bet can turn that into nothing. See our page on Casumo's max bet for more.
What happens after irregular play is found
Most terms let the casino remove the bonus and the winnings made with it. Repeated or deliberate breaches can lead to a promotional restriction or account closure. Your deposited money should not be swept up with the bonus: the CMA's online gambling case (opens in a new tab) led to commitments that players can withdraw their own money during bonus play and against unfair confiscation.
A vague clause is a different matter. In July 2025 the Gambling Commission fined Taichi Tech £170,000 (opens in a new tab), partly because a term let it forfeit winnings at its discretion. An irregular play rule has to say what it covers.
Challenging an irregular play decision
Ask the casino which bet or bets it says broke the rules and which term it applied. Compare that with the terms in force when you opted in. If you still disagree, make a formal complaint. After 8 weeks without a resolution, the operator must offer referral to a free ADR service; the Commission's guide to taking a complaint to ADR (opens in a new tab) explains how. Our guide on when a casino can void winnings has a step-by-step version.
No-wagering spins leave less room for irregular play, because there is no bonus balance to bet with afterwards. 18+ and terms apply. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p on its selected games after a deposit and £10 of slots bets; they last 7 days, carry no wagering, and Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards are excluded. Ladbrokes releases 50 spins at 10p a day for 10 days after a £10 slots spend.
PlayOJO gives 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p for a first deposit of £10 or more, with winnings paid in cash; Northern Ireland is excluded. The spin value is fixed in each case, so stake rules don't arise while the spins are played.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
What does irregular play mean at a casino?
Irregular play means betting during a bonus in a way the offer's terms don't allow. The usual examples are staking above the maximum bet, using games the bonus excludes, or placing bets that cancel each other out. If the casino finds it, it can normally remove the bonus and any winnings made with it. The rule should be clearly written in the terms before you opt in. Our bonus terms guide shows where such clauses sit.
Is going over the max bet irregular play?
Yes, in most bonus terms a stake above the maximum bet while a bonus is active is the clearest example of irregular play. Casumo, for instance, sets a £5 limit per bet with an active bonus. Some casinos block oversized bets automatically; others don't, so the responsibility can fall on you. Check the limit before playing and remember the legal slot limits of £5 for over-25s and £2 for under-25s also apply. Our page on why casinos limit bonus bets explains more.
Can a casino keep my deposit for irregular play?
Generally, no. Under clear terms, a casino can remove the bonus and the winnings tied to it, but your own deposit is treated separately. Operators committed to the CMA that players could withdraw their own money during bonus play, and the Gambling Commission expects terms to be fair and transparent. If your deposit is withheld, ask for the reason in writing and use the complaints process. Can a casino take back a bonus covers what is and isn't allowed.
Is irregular play the same as bonus abuse?
They overlap but aren't the same. Bonus abuse usually refers to how an offer is claimed, such as through duplicate accounts or false details. Irregular play refers to how you bet while the bonus is active, such as breaking the max bet or playing excluded games. Some terms put both under one clause. The consequences are similar: loss of the bonus and its winnings, and sometimes account restrictions. Our bonus abuse entry explains the claiming side.
Do free spins have irregular play rules?
Rarely while the spins are being played, because the stake per spin is fixed by the offer, such as 10p. Rules can apply afterwards if spin winnings are paid as bonus funds that need wagering, since you then choose your own stakes and games. No-wagering spins, like the current Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO welcome offers, pay winnings as cash, so bonus play rules don't follow them. See what stake are free spins played at.
How do I avoid breaking irregular play rules by mistake?
Read the bonus terms for the max bet, excluded games and any rules on bet types before you play. Note them down, and keep your stakes well inside the limit. Stick to games the offer lists. If you are unsure whether a game or bet is allowed, ask support before playing and keep the reply. If you want to play freely, you can decline or cancel the bonus. Our casino bonus checklist is a good starting point.
