Stake meaning, in a casino: your stake is the amount of money you put at risk on a single spin, hand or bet. On a slot it is the total cost of one spin, such as 20p or £1. In the UK, online slot stakes are capped at £5 per spin for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, and bonus terms can set lower limits.
Your stake is what one spin or bet costs, not your whole balance.
UK law caps online slot stakes at £5 (25+) and £2 (18–24) per game cycle.
Bonus max bet rules, like Casumo's £5, sit on top of the legal limits.
Free spins have a fixed stake set by the offer, usually 10p.
Average cost per spin = stake × house edge: 4p on a £1 spin at 96% RTP.

Stake meaning in casino games
A stake is the money committed to one game round. On roulette it is the chips you place on the table before the spin; on blackjack it is your opening bet plus anything added to split or double; on a slot it is the total cost of one press of the spin button. Slots often show it as a coin value multiplied by a number of lines or a bet level, but what matters is the total taken from your balance per spin.
The word turns up in nearly every bonus term, which is why it has its own entry in our casino bonus glossary. Stake per spin, max stake, minimum stake and stake contribution all start from this simple idea.
Stake limits that apply in the UK
Three different limits can apply to the same spin. The lowest one wins.
While a deposit bonus is active, terms usually cap the stake per bet. Casumo's 50% offer sets a maximum of £5 per bet with an active bonus. A bet over the cap can lead to the bonus or its winnings being removed, which is why our casino bonus max bet page and Casumo bonus max bet page go through the wording line by line. For the reasons behind these clauses, see why do casinos limit bonus bets?.
Some offers also set a minimum stake for a bet to count, or apply a reduced stake contribution on some games. Both change how quickly your stakes clear wagering, not what each stake costs.
The stake on free spins
Free spins are played at a fixed stake chosen by the casino. All three spin offers we list use 10p per spin, so 100 spins are worth £10 at face value and 80 spins £8. You can't raise the stake on offer spins, and wins are paid at the 10p level. See what stake are free spins played at? for how this shows on screen.
That 10p figure is also the right starting point for valuing spins: 100 × 10p × 96% RTP is about £9.60 on average. A slot's max win is quoted as a multiple of stake, so a 5,000x max win on a 10p spin is £500.
How stake size changes the cost of play
The average cost of a spin is the stake times the house edge. At a 4% edge, a 10p spin costs 0.4p on average, a £1 spin 4p and a £5 spin 20p. Since UK slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, a player can still place hundreds of spins an hour, so stake size has a big effect on the cost of a session.
Decide your budget for the session before you start.
Divide it by the number of spins you want, for example £20 ÷ 200 spins = 10p.
Set the stake to that figure or lower, and don't raise it to win back losses.
Use a deposit limit or reality check to keep to the plan.
Stake mistakes that void bonus winnings
Raising the stake mid-wagering above the bonus max bet.
Forgetting extra stakes count, such as gamble features or side bets that push one round over the cap.
Assuming the legal limit is the bonus limit. £5 may be allowed by law and still break an offer with a lower cap.
Using a game the offer excludes, where stakes don't count at all.

Frequently asked questions
What does stake mean in gambling?
Your stake is the amount of money you bet on a single game round, such as one slot spin or one roulette spin. It is taken from your balance when the round starts and is lost if the round doesn't pay. On slots, the stake is the total cost of a spin, however the game splits it into coins or lines. The average cost of a stake is the stake times the house edge. See house edge for that calculation.
What is the maximum stake on UK online slots?
£5 per spin, or per game cycle, for players aged 25 and over since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 since 21 May 2025. The limits are licence conditions on every remote casino operator in Great Britain and apply to reel-based online slots, not to table games. Bonus terms can set lower caps while an offer is active. Read online slot stake limits for the full rule and what a game cycle covers.
What is a max bet rule in bonus terms?
It is a cap on the stake per bet while bonus funds are active. Casumo, for example, sets a maximum of £5 per bet with an active bonus. Bets above the limit may not count towards wagering, and breaking the rule can lead to the bonus and its winnings being removed. The cap applies alongside the legal stake limits, so the lower figure is the one to follow. Our casino bonus max bet page explains how these terms are worded.
Can I change the stake on free spins?
No. Free spins from an offer are played at a fixed stake set by the casino, usually shown in the terms; Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all use 10p. The game locks the stake while the offer spins are running, and any win is paid at that level. Once the spins are used, you can play on with your own money at the stake you choose, within the limits. See coin value for how stake and coin value relate.
Is the stake the same as the coin value?
Not always. Coin value is the size of each coin a slot uses, and the stake is the total per spin, which may be coin value × number of lines or coins. A slot with 10 lines at 1p per coin has a 10p stake. Bonus terms and stake limits always refer to the total stake per spin. If in doubt, check the bet display in the game, which shows the total. Our coin value entry has examples.
Does a higher stake improve my chances?
No. On almost all slots, the RTP and the chance of each outcome are the same at every stake; a higher stake simply scales up both wins and losses. The average cost rises in line with the stake: at a 4% edge, a £2 spin costs 8p on average against 0.4p for 10p. A few games differ: NetEnt's Mega Joker publishes an RTP of up to 99% only at its top stake with the Supermeter, so check the help screen. Read bonus myths for other misconceptions.
Do bonus stakes count towards the £5 limit?
Yes. The legal stake limit applies to every spin on an online slot, whether it is funded by cash or bonus funds. If you are 25 or over, no single spin can exceed £5; if you are 18 to 24, the cap is £2. A bonus max bet may be lower still. Offer spins at 10p are well under both limits. Our UK bonus terms after January 2026 page summarises the rules now in force.
