Session meaning, at an online casino: a session is one continuous stretch of play, from logging in or opening a game until you log out or stop. UK rules require casino games to show how long the session has lasted and your net position, and let you set reality checks that pop up the elapsed time at intervals you choose.
A session is one continuous period of play, start to finish.
UK casino games must show elapsed session time and your net position.
Reality checks show the time since the session began and need acknowledging.
Results in one session vary widely; RTP is a long-run figure, not a session forecast.
Setting a time and money budget before each session is the simplest safeguard.

Session meaning in online gambling
A session is the block of time you spend gambling in one go. It starts when you log in or open your first game and ends when you log out, close the app or stop for a meaningful break. If you play two slots one after another without logging out, that is one session; if you play in the morning and again after dinner, that is two.

Slots since 31 October 2021; all casino games since 17 January 2025
Under the reality check guidance, you should be able to set or change the frequency at any time, any default should be the shortest period on offer, and play can't continue into a new game until you acknowledge the message. The check should also offer a way to log out and a link to your account history. The Commission's summer 2023 consultation response (opens in a new tab) set out the extension of these session rules to all online casino games from 17 January 2025. Our reality check entry explains how to switch one on, and slot game design rules covers the speed and autoplay limits.
Why one session tells you little about a game
A session is a small sample. A slot with 96% RTP can return 50% of your stakes one evening and 150% the next; only over a huge number of rounds does the average settle. That is especially true on high volatility games, where long losing runs are part of the design.
Worked example: a session of 400 spins at 20p is £80 of turnover. At a 4% edge the average cost is £3.20, but the actual result might be a loss of £30 or a gain of £40. Neither tells you the game is "hot" or "cold"; each spin is independent.
If you notice yourself extending a session to win back losses, that is a recognised warning sign. Stop, take a break, and consider a time-out.
How to plan a session before you start
Decide the most you are happy to spend, and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
Set a deposit limit in the account so the budget is enforced.
Turn on a reality check at an interval that suits you, such as every 30 minutes.
Choose a stake that gives you the number of rounds you want from the budget.
Stop when the time or money runs out, whether you are up or down.
Ending a session for longer: time-outs and self-exclusion
If one session ends but you want a longer gap, use the account tools. A time-out blocks play for a short period, from a day up to six weeks. Self-exclusion lasts at least six months, and GAMSTOP covers every GB-licensed online casino at once. Casinos must stop marketing and new bonus offers to customers showing strong signs of harm. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), is on 0808 8020 133, free and open 24/7.
Sessions and casino bonus terms
Bonus validity is measured in days, not sessions: Coral's spins last 7 days, Ladbrokes' daily spins must be claimed by 23:59 each day, and Casumo's wagering must be finished within 7 days. You never have to clear an offer in one sitting, and trying to can mean far longer sessions than planned. UK rules also stop operators increasing an incentive because you hit the qualifying spend sooner; see time-based incentive rules.
Session-friendly offers from our partners
Spin offers paid out over several days can be played across short sessions rather than one long one. Ladbrokes gives 50 free spins a day for 10 days (10p each, up to 500) after a £10 slots spend; each day's spins must be claimed by 23:59 and last 7 days. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p, valid 7 days, after you deposit and bet £10 on slots; PlayOJO gives 80 spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza with a first deposit of £10 or more. No wagering on spin winnings for all three. Excluded payment methods apply at Coral and Ladbrokes. 18+, new customers, terms apply; see daily free spins.

Frequently asked questions
What does session mean at an online casino?
A session is one continuous period of play, from logging in or opening a game until you log out or stop. Casinos use it to measure elapsed time for reality checks and to show your net position, so you can see how long you have played and whether you are up or down. Two separate visits on the same day are two sessions. Our reality check entry explains the main session tool.
What is a reality check in a casino session?
A reality check is a pop-up that shows how long your session has lasted, at intervals you choose. Under UK technical standards you must acknowledge it before starting another game, and it should offer a way to log out and see your account history. You should be able to change the interval at any time. It is a reminder, not a block. Turn it on in your account's safer gambling settings; our reality check page shows how.
Do UK casinos have to show how long I have been playing?
Yes. Under RTS 13C, casino games must display the elapsed time for the whole gaming session, starting when the game is opened or play begins. Full-screen apps that hide your device clock must show the time of day or elapsed time themselves. Casino games must also show your net position. These rules were extended across online casino games in 2025. Our slot game design rules page lists the related rules.
What is net position in a session?
Net position is what you have won minus what you have staked during the current session. If you have staked £50 and won back £38, your net position is minus £12. UK casino games must show it on screen so you don't lose track. It is a useful reality check because a few wins can make a session feel better than it is. Compare it with your gross deposit, which counts money paid in rather than results.
How long should a casino session last?
There is no right length, but setting a limit before you start is the key habit. Many people choose a fixed time, such as 30 or 60 minutes, and a fixed budget, and stop when either runs out. A reality check helps you stick to it. If sessions often run longer than planned, or you play to recover losses, consider a time-out or talk to the National Gambling Helpline. See time-out for how breaks work.
Do I have to use a bonus in one session?
No. Offers set limits in days, not sessions. Coral's free spins are valid for 7 days, Ladbrokes credits spins daily for 10 days, and Casumo gives 7 days to complete its 10x wagering. You can split play across several short sessions. If an offer would only work by playing much longer than you would like, it is better to let it lapse. Our free spins expiry page covers the time limits.
Can a casino reward me for longer sessions?
There's no specific ban on it any more. When SR code 5.1.1 was rewritten from 19 January 2026, the old clause saying a bonus's value must not depend on gambling for a pre-determined length of time or frequency was deleted. A casino still can't alter or increase a reward because you hit the qualifying spend sooner, terms must be clear and fair, and casinos must stop new bonus offers to customers showing strong signs of harm. Read time-based incentive rules for the detail.
