First deposit meaning

First deposit meaning, in one line: it is the very first payment you make into a new casino account, and most UK welcome offers are tied to it. The amount, the payment method and the timing of that single transaction decide whether a bonus is credited, so it pays to understand the rules before you add any money.

Key takeaways

  • A first deposit is the first successful payment into a new account; later top-ups don’t count.
  • Welcome offers usually set a minimum (often £10 or £20) and exclude some payment methods.
  • Since 31 October 2025 you must be prompted to set a financial limit before that payment.
  • If the first deposit doesn’t qualify, the welcome offer is normally gone for good.

First deposit meaning in casino terms

A first deposit is the opening payment that moves your own money into a newly registered casino account. Registration, age checks and identity checks come before it; gambling comes after it. Casinos treat it as a milestone because it is the moment a sign-up becomes a paying customer, which is why so many welcome bonuses are built around it.

Two details catch people out. First, only a deposit that actually lands counts: a declined card or a cancelled bank payment isn’t your first deposit, the next successful one is. Second, the label is fixed. Once that first payment has gone through, every later top-up is a second, third or fourth deposit, even if you made it a minute later. A first deposit bonus can’t be moved onto a later payment because you forgot to opt in.

In bonus terms you will also see “qualifying deposit”. A first deposit is simply a point in time; a qualifying deposit is one that meets every condition of an offer. Your first deposit can fail to qualify.

Why the first deposit matters for a welcome bonus

Most new-customer offers check three things at the moment of the first deposit: the amount, the payment method and whether you opted in or chose the offer beforehand. If any one of them is wrong, the casino’s system records the deposit as non-qualifying and the welcome offer usually lapses, because a later deposit is no longer a first one.

The amount also sets the size of a match bonus. Casumo’s offer, for example, is a 50% bonus up to £100 on the first deposit with a £20 minimum, so £20 brings a £10 bonus while £200 reaches the £100 cap. 10bet’s 100% match up to £25 means a £25 first deposit gets a £25 bonus. Both are 18+ offers with 10x wagering on the bonus, and terms apply. Depositing more than the cap adds nothing to the bonus.

A worked first deposit example in pounds

Picture someone opening a Casumo account and paying in £40 after opting in. The 50% match gives a £20 bonus. The wagering requirement is 10 times the bonus, so £200 of bets must be placed within 7 days. On slots with a 4% house edge, £200 of play costs about £8 on average, leaving an expected value of roughly £12 from the bonus. Real sessions swing far above and below that figure, and losses are the likelier outcome over time.

Now the same person pays that £40 with an excluded e-wallet. Nothing is credited, and the next deposit is no longer a first one. The money is still theirs to withdraw or play with, but the welcome offer has gone. That gap between “deposited” and “qualified” is the whole reason the term deserves a glossary entry.

Payment methods and the first deposit

Payment exclusions bite hardest on the first deposit. Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ spin offers both rule out PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and prepaid cards (Coral also lists certain debit cards), and 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller from its welcome bonus. Our guide to how payment exclusions work explains why casinos do this; in short, e-wallets are harder to tie to one person, which matters for offers limited to one per customer.

A debit card is the method most likely to qualify, though Coral’s wording means you should still check which cards are covered. Credit cards are not an option at all: the Gambling Commission’s rule on credit card gambling (opens in a new tab) has applied since 14 April 2020, including e-wallets loaded from a credit card. Our debit card bonus guide and PayPal bonus guide go further.

UK rules that apply before your first deposit

Several Gambling Commission rules sit around this one payment. Your age and identity must be verified before you can deposit or gamble, a requirement in force since May 2019 and covered in our verification guide. Since 31 October 2025 operators must also prompt you to set a deposit limit or other financial limit before the first deposit, with setting one as the default; the Commission explains this in its deposit limit announcement (opens in a new tab). Our page on the financial limit prompt has the detail.

Once that payment is in, the money remains yours. Under the CMA undertakings and Commission guidance you must be able to withdraw your deposit balance even while a bonus is active, and you can’t be made to wager your own cash before taking it out. The withdrawal rules for bonuses cover what happens to the bonus if you do.

First deposit checklist: what to confirm beforehand

  1. Read the offer’s significant terms: minimum amount, deadline after sign-up and eligible payment methods.
  2. Opt in or select the welcome offer before paying if the terms ask for it.
  3. Set a deposit limit you are comfortable losing in full when the prompt appears.
  4. Pay with a method the offer accepts, in your own name.
  5. Check the bonus or spins have appeared before you start playing, and contact support straight away if they haven’t.
  • Minimum deposit: the lowest amount the cashier or an offer accepts.
  • Net deposit: deposits minus withdrawals, the figure behind financial vulnerability checks at £150 in 30 days.
  • Second deposit bonus: an offer on the next payment, which our partners don’t currently list.
  • Opt-in bonus: an offer you must actively choose before depositing.
  • The full casino bonus glossary lists every term in one place.

First deposit offers from our partners

PlayOJO is the cleanest example of an offer tied directly to the first deposit: deposit at least £10 and you get 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, worth £8, with winnings paid as cash and no wagering. It is for new UK customers aged 18+ outside Northern Ireland, through the designated offer link only, and terms apply.

Coral and Ladbrokes word theirs differently. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p (£10 of spins) once a new player aged 18+ deposits and bets £10 on slots; the spins must be accepted within 48 hours, last 7 days and carry no wagering. Ladbrokes pays 50 spins a day for 10 days, up to 500 at 10p (£50 of spins), after a £10 slots spend, with each day’s batch claimed by 23:59 and valid for 7 days. Both exclude PayPal, e-wallets and prepaid cards, and both are run by LC International Limited, so check whether holding new accounts at each is allowed. You can compare all five on our casino bonuses page.

Frequently asked questions

What does first deposit mean at an online casino?

It means the first successful payment you make into a new casino account. Registration and identity checks come first, and the deposit is what turns the account into a funded one. Welcome offers almost always attach to this payment, so its amount, method and timing decide whether you get the bonus. A declined or cancelled payment doesn’t count; the next one that goes through does. Our first deposit bonus guide shows how the offers built around it are structured, and the casino bonus glossary explains the surrounding terms.

Can I get a welcome bonus on my second deposit instead?

Usually not, if the offer is written as a first deposit bonus. Once the first payment has gone through, later deposits can’t be relabelled, even if you forgot to opt in or used an excluded method. Some casinos run separate offers on later deposits, but none of our five partners lists one at present. If you missed out, contact support politely and ask, but expect the answer to follow the written terms. Our page on what happens if you break bonus terms and the second deposit bonus page explain more.

What is the minimum first deposit for a bonus?

It depends on the offer, but £10 or £20 is typical among the offers we list. PlayOJO’s 80 spins need a first deposit of at least £10 and Casumo’s 50% match needs £20, while Coral and Ladbrokes focus on a £10 slots bet or spend after depositing. The cashier minimum can be lower than the offer minimum, so a smaller deposit may be accepted without qualifying. Check the significant terms on the promotion page first. Our minimum deposit entry and minimum deposit for a bonus answer go into the detail.

Why didn’t my first deposit qualify for the bonus?

The most common reasons are an excluded payment method, a deposit below the offer minimum, or not opting in before paying. PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and prepaid cards are excluded from several welcome offers, and 10bet asks you to choose its casino bonus at sign-up and deposit within 7 days. Your deposited money is still yours to play with or withdraw. Contact support with the date, amount and method, and ask which condition wasn’t met. Our answer on why a bonus isn’t credited covers the usual causes.

Do I have to set a deposit limit before my first deposit?

You must be prompted to, and setting one is the default, but you can confirm that you don’t want one. The Gambling Commission rule has applied since 31 October 2025, and operators can’t pre-fill a suggested amount. A limit is a useful safeguard: choose a figure you could lose entirely without it affecting bills or savings. Lowering a limit has to take effect immediately. The guide on how to set deposit limits walks through the steps.

Can I withdraw my first deposit if I change my mind?

Yes. Your deposit balance belongs to you and you can withdraw it at any time, including while a bonus is active. The CMA’s undertakings and the Gambling Commission’s guidance say you mustn’t be made to meet wagering requirements on your own money before taking it out. Withdrawing may cancel any linked bonus, so read what the terms say about forfeiting it. The casino may need to finish identity checks first if they are incomplete. Our pages on withdrawing with a bonus active and bonus withdrawal explain the process.

Is a bigger first deposit always better for a bonus?

No. A match bonus stops growing at its cap, and anything above it simply adds your own money at risk. Casumo’s 50% match peaks at a £200 deposit, and 10bet’s 100% match stops at £25. A larger bonus also brings larger wagering: £100 of Casumo bonus at 10x is £1,000 of bets, costing about £40 on average on a 4% house edge slot. Deposit only what you planned to spend on entertainment. Our big bonus vs small bonus comparison helps you size it.
