Qualifying bet meaning: the stake, or total of stakes, you must place before an offer is triggered. Coral's welcome offer is the typical case: deposit, bet £10 on slots, and 100 free spins follow. A qualifying bet comes before the reward, whereas wagering comes after it, and the money staked is your own and can be lost.
A qualifying bet is the play that triggers the reward: nothing arrives until it is complete.
It comes before the bonus; a wagering requirement comes after it.
Coral asks for £10+ on slots and Ladbrokes for a £10 slots spend; PlayOJO needs no qualifying bet, only a deposit.
UK stake limits mean £10 can't be one slot spin: at least 2 spins for over-25s and 5 for 18 to 24-year-olds.
Since 19 January 2026 a casino offer can't be triggered by a sports bet, or the other way round.

Qualifying bet meaning in casino offers
Offers built on the 'bet X, get Y' model need you to stake a set amount on eligible games before the reward is released. That stake is the qualifying bet. It's sometimes called a 'qualifying wager', a 'spend' or a 'play' requirement: Coral says 'bet £10+ on slots', Ladbrokes says 'spend £10+ on slots'. Both mean placing at least £10 of real-money slot stakes after depositing.
Some offers have no qualifying bet at all: PlayOJO's 80 spins are triggered by a qualifying deposit of £10 or more alone. You'll find both terms, and many more, in the casino bonus glossary.
Qualifying bet vs wagering requirement
The two are easy to confuse because both involve placing bets. The difference is timing and purpose.

Coral's and Ladbrokes' spin offers have a qualifying bet and then no wagering on spin winnings. Casumo's and 10bet's match offers have no qualifying bet but do carry wagering requirements of 10x the bonus. Our comparison of free spins vs deposit bonus sets the two models side by side.
What a £10 qualifying bet costs, worked through
A £10 qualifying bet on a slot with a 96% return to player loses about 40p on average. That average hides a wide range: in a short session the whole £10 can go, or it can turn into more. Once the £10 is placed, Coral's 100 spins at 10p carry £10 of face value, and at a 96% RTP they'd return around £9.60 on average, again with large swings either way.
Stake limits shape how the £10 is placed. Since 9 April 2025 online slot stakes have been capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and since 21 May 2025 at £2 for those aged 18 to 24, as the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out. So a £10 qualifying bet takes at least 2 spins at £5, or at least 5 spins at £2. Smaller stakes simply mean more spins to reach £10, for example 50 spins at 20p.
What usually counts towards a qualifying bet
Eligible games: both of our partner offers specify slots, so table and live games won't count.
Real-money stakes: bets placed from your deposited balance after the deposit.
The right window: stakes placed after opting in and within any period the terms set.
Settled bets: some terms count a bet only once the round is complete; check the wording.
Bets placed on excluded games, before opting in or with an excluded deposit method won't trigger the reward. The page on which games are excluded from bonuses explains how game lists work, and our entry on selected games covers the list of slots where the spins can then be used.
UK rules on qualifying bets since January 2026
Since 19 January 2026, an incentive can't combine more than one gambling product. That means a casino offer can't be triggered by a sports qualifying bet, and a sports free bet can't be earned by slot play. The Commission explained the change in gambling promotions to be safer and simpler (opens in a new tab), and our page on the mixed-product promotion ban covers the detail.
The same changes stopped incentives whose value changes over time. Qualifying bets and their rewards also count as significant conditions, so the amount and the eligible games must be shown with the offer, as our page on bonus terms after January 2026 explains.
Coral: deposit (certain methods excluded) and bet £10 or more on slots for 100 free spins on selected games at 10p each; accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings. Ladbrokes: deposit and spend £10 or more on slots for 50 free spins a day for the first 10 days (up to 500), 10p each, claimed before 23:59 each day, valid 7 days, no wagering. PlayOJO has no qualifying bet: a first deposit of £10 or more brings 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza.
All three are for new customers aged 18+, and terms apply. The £10 qualifying bet is real gambling, and you may lose it. Our bet £10 get free spins page compares the Coral and Ladbrokes offers in detail.

Frequently asked questions
Is a qualifying bet the same as wagering?
No. A qualifying bet is placed before you receive anything and is what triggers the offer, such as Coral's £10 on slots before 100 spins arrive. Wagering is play required after a bonus is credited, to turn bonus funds into cash, such as Casumo's 10x within 7 days. An offer can have one, both or neither. Coral's spins have a qualifying bet and no wagering on winnings. The guide to free spins wagering explained covers the post-bonus side.
Can I place the qualifying bet in one spin?
Not for a £10 qualifying bet on an online slot in Great Britain. Slot stakes are capped at £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and at £2 for those aged 18 to 24, so the £10 takes at least two or five spins respectively. Many players use much smaller stakes, which just spreads the £10 over more spins. The house edge is the same either way. The page on online slot stake limits explains how the caps work.
Does a qualifying bet have to win?
No. The qualifying bet counts once it's placed on an eligible game, win or lose, unless the terms say otherwise. That's why it's real money at risk: the £10 might be lost in full before the spins arrive, and the reward doesn't replace it. Read the offer to check whether stakes must be settled or placed within a time limit. Our page can you lose money with free spins explains where the cost sits in a 'bet and get' offer.
Can I use a sports bet as a qualifying bet for casino spins?
Not since 19 January 2026. The Gambling Commission's rule against mixed-product incentives means a promotion can't include more than one type of gambling, such as betting and casino. So a casino spins offer must be triggered by casino play, and a sports offer by sports bets. Some operators now ask you to choose a sports or casino welcome offer at sign-up. Our page on sports or casino welcome offer covers that choice.
Do bonus funds count towards a qualifying bet?
Check the terms, because they decide it. Coral's and Ladbrokes' offers describe the trigger as depositing and then betting or spending £10 on slots, which points to real-money stakes from your own deposit. If you hold any other bonus at the time, check the terms, as stakes from bonus balances may not count. The guide to how bonus funds and cash are used explains the order balances are used in.
What if my free spins don't arrive after the qualifying bet?
First check the basics: the bet was on eligible slots, the deposit method wasn't excluded, and you've looked in the promotions or rewards area, since Coral's spins must be accepted within 48 hours. Then contact support with the time and size of your stakes. If the conditions were met and the spins are still missing, ask for them to be credited and use the complaints process if needed. See why are my free spins not showing.
