How cashback is paid

How cashback is paid depends on three settings in the terms: what it’s calculated on (net losses, every stake or deposits), when it’s worked out (per day, per week or per session) and what form it arrives in (withdrawable cash or bonus funds with wagering). Get those three lines and you can work out exactly what a scheme returns, and when.

Key takeaways

  • Cashback is either a percentage of net losses over a period or a small return on every stake, win or lose.
  • Paid as cash, it can be withdrawn straight away; paid as bonus funds, it carries wagering of up to 10x.
  • Caps, minimum payouts and game exclusions decide what you actually receive.
  • Cashback returns part of what’s already been lost; it never turns gambling into a way to make money.
  • Among our partners, PlayOJO’s OJOplus is the only published money-back scheme, paid with no wagering.

How cashback is paid: the short answer

A casino cashback scheme pays back a percentage of either your losses or your stakes, on a schedule set in the terms, into your cash balance or your bonus balance. A net-loss scheme pays only if you finish the period down; an every-bet scheme pays a little on each stake whatever the result. The payment then either sits as withdrawable cash or as bonus funds that must be wagered before they can be withdrawn.

None of our five partners runs a weekly net-loss cashback offer that we can point to in published terms; the one money-back scheme we can describe is PlayOJO’s OJOplus, covered further down. This guide explains the mechanics so you can read any cashback offer accurately. For the wider picture of the bonus type, see our cashback bonus page, and for other practical explainers, our casino bonus guides.

What cashback is calculated on: losses, stakes or deposits

The basis is the single biggest difference between schemes, and it changes both how much is paid and whether anything is paid at all.

The three common cashback bases
BasisHow it’s worked outPays when you win overall? Also called
Net losses% of stakes lost minus winnings over the periodNoLossback, loss refund
Every stake% of each bet placed, win or loseYesMoney back, rakeback
Net deposits% of deposits minus withdrawals over the periodOnly if deposits exceed withdrawalsDeposit cashback

Net-loss schemes are what most people mean by cashback; our lossback bonus page goes into them. Every-stake schemes work more like the rakeback model from poker. The net-deposit version depends on how the casino defines a net deposit, so check whether your remaining balance at the end of the period is counted.

Look closely at what counts as a loss. Some schemes count only real-money stakes, not bets placed with bonus funds or free spins, and some exclude particular games. A loss on a game outside the scheme won’t be included in the calculation.

When cashback is paid: daily, weekly or per bet

Every scheme has a calculation period and a payment date, and they aren’t always the same day. A weekly scheme might total losses from Monday to Sunday and pay on the following Tuesday. A daily scheme might total each calendar day and pay the next morning. Every-stake schemes can credit almost immediately after each bet settles.

The terms should give the exact cut-off times and the time zone. That matters if you play late in the evening: a session that runs past midnight can fall partly in one period and partly in the next, with two separate calculations. The weekly bonus page explains how week-based promotions are usually timed.

If a cashback payment is due and doesn’t arrive by the stated time, contact support with the dates of the period. Screenshots of your balance and transaction history make the check quicker.

Is cashback paid as cash or bonus funds?

This is the line that decides what a cashback payment is really worth. Cash goes into your withdrawable balance; bonus funds go into a separate bonus balance and must be wagered first. UK guidance says the two balances must always be shown separately, so you should be able to see at a glance which one a payment landed in.

How cashback is paid in pounds: worked examples

These examples use a hypothetical 10% net-loss scheme and round numbers. They aren’t any partner’s terms; they show how the settings change the payment.

A hypothetical 10% weekly net-loss scheme
WeekNet resultCashback dueIf paid as bonus at 10xAverage value if bonus (4% edge)
Week 1Lost £80£8£80 to wagerabout £4.80
Week 2Won £40£0nothing to wager£0
Week 3Lost £250 (£20 weekly cap)£20£200 to wagerabout £12
Week 4Lost £30 (minimum payout £5)£0 (£3 is below the £5 minimum)nothing£0

Week 3 shows a cap at work: 10% of £250 would be £25, but a £20 maximum limits it. Week 4 shows a minimum payout: £3 falls below a £5 threshold, so nothing is paid. The bonus column shows the cost of wagering: £80 of play at a 4% house edge costs about £3.20 on average, leaving roughly £4.80 of value from an £8 payment. Our cashback maths guide works through more scenarios.

The bigger point sits behind the numbers. If you stake £1,000 on slots with 96% RTP, the average loss is about £40; a 10% net-loss refund returns about £4 of that, leaving an average loss of about £36. Cashback reduces a loss after it happens. It doesn’t change the odds of any game.

Caps, minimum payouts and excluded games

Four smaller terms shape what actually reaches your account.

  • Maximum cashback: a cap per period, such as £20 a week, regardless of losses.
  • Minimum payout: small amounts below a threshold may not be paid at all.
  • Eligible games: some schemes cover only slots, or exclude jackpot or live games.
  • Real-money only: losses from bonus funds or free spins are often left out.

An insurance bonus is a close relative: a one-off refund if a first deposit or session is lost, usually paid as bonus funds. It follows the same rules about form and wagering. If you want to compare a cashback offer with a matched top-up, see cashback vs reload bonus.

How cashback reaches your account, step by step

  1. Opt in if the terms require it; UK guidance says players must opt into promotions rather than be enrolled automatically.
  2. Play eligible games with real money during the calculation period.
  3. At the cut-off, the casino totals your eligible losses, stakes or net deposits.
  4. The percentage is applied, then any cap or minimum payout.
  5. The payment is credited on the stated date to your cash balance or bonus balance.
  6. If paid as cash, you can withdraw it; if paid as bonus funds, wager it within the time limit first.

Some casinos make you claim each payment from the promotions area within a window. If you don’t, it can lapse. Claiming is covered under opt-in bonuses, and automatic bonuses explains the alternatives.

UK rules on how cashback is paid in 2026

Cashback paid as bonus funds is an incentive like any other, so the Gambling Commission’s social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) applies. Since 19 January 2026, wagering can’t exceed 10 times the bonus, an incentive can’t mix gambling products (for example, casino cashback earned on sports bets), and a casino can’t alter or increase an incentive because the qualifying spend was reached sooner than the offer period. A cashback rate boosted for hitting a threshold early would fall into that last category; our page on time-based incentive rules explains it.

The significant terms, including the basis, cap, form and wagering, must be clear and shown with the offer, and the Commission’s consumer guide to free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) says you should always know whether you’re playing with your own money or bonus funds. Operators must also stop new bonus offers to customers who show strong signs of gambling harm; see bonuses and harm indicators. Players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings in the UK, and cashback earned through ordinary play sits within the same position; see UK gambling winnings tax.

How PlayOJO’s OJOplus money back is paid

PlayOJO’s signature feature is OJOplus, which pays money back on every game played, with no wagering attached. That makes it an every-stake scheme rather than a net-loss one: it pays whether a session ends up or down. The rate isn’t something we can confirm from published figures, so check PlayOJO’s own pages for the current percentage and how often it’s credited.

Because it’s paid without wagering, OJOplus money doesn’t need playing through before you can withdraw it. Our guide to how OJOplus works explains the scheme in more detail, and OJOplus vs cashback compares it with a typical net-loss scheme. Coral and Ladbrokes don’t publish a cashback scheme in the terms we hold, so check their promotions pages for anything current.

Cashback and chasing losses: when to step back

Net-loss cashback carries a specific risk: it can make losing feel partly refunded and encourage more play to reach a cap or threshold. Playing on to “make the cashback worth it” means more losses, not fewer. Decide your budget before the period starts and treat any payment as a small refund, not a reason to continue.

Use a deposit limit, which UK operators must prompt you to set before your first deposit, and see how to set deposit limits. If you’re finding it hard to stop, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab).

Frequently asked questions

Is casino cashback paid in cash?

Sometimes. Cashback can be paid as withdrawable cash or as bonus funds that need wagering, and the terms must say which. Cash payments can be withdrawn straight away; bonus-funds payments must be played through, up to 10 times the amount under UK rules since 19 January 2026. Check the balance the payment lands in, as UK guidance requires cash and bonus balances to be shown separately. Our page on no wagering cashback explains the cash-paid kind.

How long does cashback take to be paid?

It depends on the scheme’s calculation period and payment date. Weekly schemes often total a Monday-to-Sunday period and pay a day or two later; daily schemes may pay the next morning; every-stake schemes can credit soon after each bet settles. The exact cut-off times should be in the terms. If a payment is late, contact support with the dates of the period. Our weekly bonus page explains how week-based offers are usually timed.

Do I get cashback if I win?

Not from a net-loss scheme. Those pay a percentage of what you lost over the period, so a winning week pays nothing. Every-stake schemes, like PlayOJO’s OJOplus, pay a little back on each bet whether you win or lose. Deposit-based schemes pay only if deposits exceed withdrawals. Read the basis in the terms to know which you’re dealing with. Our lossback bonus page explains net-loss schemes in more detail.

Does cashback have wagering requirements?

Only when it’s paid as bonus funds. Cash-paid cashback has no wagering and can be withdrawn at once. If it arrives as a bonus, UK rules cap the wagering at 10 times the cashback amount, so £10 could need up to £100 of play. That play has a cost: at a 4% house edge, about £4 on average. Our cashback maths guide shows how to work out what a bonus-funds payment is worth.

Is there a maximum amount of cashback?

Most schemes set a cap per period, and the terms must show it. A 10% scheme with a £20 weekly cap pays £20 whether you lose £200 or £2,000. Some schemes also have a minimum payout below which nothing is paid. Both limits belong in the significant terms near the offer. Losing more to reach a cap only increases losses. Our cashback bonus page compares typical scheme structures.

Is cashback taxed in the UK?

Generally no. Players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings in the UK, HMRC doesn’t treat ordinary gambling as a trade, and cashback from casino play sits within that position; duty is paid by operators instead. Remote gaming duty rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026, but that’s the operator’s bill, not yours. Separate tax rules can apply to income you earn from money once it’s invested. See are casino bonuses taxable? for more.

Can cashback be earned on sports bets and used in the casino?

Not under current rules. Since 19 January 2026, a single incentive can’t mix gambling products, so casino cashback earned on sports bets, or the reverse, isn’t allowed in Great Britain. A casino scheme should count casino play and pay casino rewards. If an offer seems to link the two, check its terms or ask the operator. Our page on the mixed-product promotion ban explains the rule.

Does PlayOJO offer cashback?

PlayOJO runs OJOplus, which pays money back on every game played, with no wagering. That makes it a money-back scheme on stakes rather than a refund of net losses. We can’t confirm the current rate from published figures, so check PlayOJO’s own pages for it. Its welcome offer is separate: 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza for new UK customers (18+, excluding Northern Ireland) on a £10+ first deposit. See how OJOplus works.

Are cashback bonuses worth it?

They can soften losses slightly, but they don’t change the house edge or make gambling profitable. On £1,000 of slot stakes at 96% RTP, the average loss is about £40, and a 10% net-loss scheme returns about £4 of it. Cash-paid schemes are worth their face value; bonus-funds schemes are worth less after wagering. They suit people who were going to play anyway. Our answer to are cashback bonuses worth it? runs the numbers.

What happens to cashback if I self-exclude?

Self-exclusion stops gambling and marketing, and operators must close accounts and return funds when you self-exclude. Any cash balance, including cashback already paid as cash, should be returned to you; bonus funds are a matter for the terms. Operators must also stop new bonuses for customers showing strong signs of harm. Self-exclusion matters far more than any pending payment. See can you claim a bonus after self-exclusion?.
