How to avoid bonus mistakes comes down to reading five things before you deposit: who can claim, which payment methods qualify, the minimum deposit, the deadlines and any stake or wagering rules. Most lost bonuses trace back to one of those lines. This guide walks through each stage, from sign-up to withdrawal, with worked pound examples from real UK offer terms.
Check the payment exclusions before the first deposit: PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and prepaid cards are excluded from several UK welcome offers.
Read the minimum deposit, opt-in step and claim window, because missing any of them usually means no bonus at all.
Work out the wagering in pounds and the time allowed before you accept a deposit match.
You can always withdraw your own deposit balance, but doing so can cancel an active bonus.
The biggest mistake is claiming a bonus you don’t need: it never changes the house edge.

How to avoid bonus mistakes: the five-line check
Almost every bonus that goes wrong fails on a line that was printed in the terms all along. UK rules help here: since the Competition and Markets Authority’s work in 2018, operators must show the significant terms next to the headline offer, and the Gambling Commission’s guide to free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) tells players what they are entitled to expect. The catch is that you still have to read them.
Before any deposit, find these five lines in the offer’s key terms box. If one of them is missing or unclear, ask live chat before you pay in, not after.
Eligibility: new customers only? Excluded regions? A one-offer-per-person or per-household rule?
Payment: which deposit methods are excluded from the welcome offer?
Money in: the minimum deposit, and whether you must also bet a set amount on slots.
Clock: the window to claim or accept, how long the spins or bonus last, and how long you have to wager.
Play rules: the maximum bet, eligible games, wagering multiple and any cap on bonus winnings.
The rest of this guide takes each stage in the order you meet it. For a list-style overview of the same problems, see our page on common casino bonus mistakes; all our practical walkthroughs sit in the casino bonus guides hub.
Mistakes before you sign up: eligibility and linked brands
The first trap is assuming you qualify. Welcome offers are for new customers, and “new” can be defined by the operator rather than the brand. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, part of Entain, under the same Gambling Commission account (54743). Someone who already holds an account with one may find that the other’s welcome offer isn’t open to them, so check the eligibility terms before registering. We explain how linked brands treat welcome offers in do Coral and Ladbrokes share accounts?.
Location matters too. PlayOJO’s welcome offer is for new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland, and the Gambling Act 2005 and Commission rules cover Great Britain rather than Northern Ireland. The guide to bonuses for Northern Ireland players sets out what that means in practice.
The third pre-registration slip is the route in. PlayOJO says its 80 spins are available only through the designated offer link and can’t be combined with other offers. None of our five partners needs a promo code for its welcome offer, so typing in a code from elsewhere won’t add anything; our page on whether casino bonuses need a code explains when codes still matter.
Avoiding payment mistakes that cancel a welcome bonus
Paying with an excluded method is the mistake that costs the most people their offer, because the deposit goes through normally and nothing warns you until the bonus doesn’t appear. Exclusions are a significant term, and the ASA has ruled against an operator for burying an excluded payment method in small print, but you still need to check the list yourself. The reasons behind them are covered in how payment exclusions work.

Skrill and Neteller
A standard debit card is the safest route for most UK welcome offers, though Coral’s wording that “certain debit cards” don’t qualify means it’s worth asking support if you bank with a card-style e-money account. Our debit card casino bonus page goes through this, and the PayPal casino bonus and Skrill and Neteller pages show which offers accept those wallets. Credit cards can’t be used to gamble in Great Britain at all, a rule in place since 14 April 2020.
Deposit, opt-in and qualifying-bet mistakes
The second cluster of errors happens at the cashier. Depositing £15 at Casumo, for example, falls short of the £20 minimum for the 50% match, so no bonus is added, whereas £20 would have brought £10. Casumo’s offer also needs an opt-in. At 10bet, you must choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up and make the first deposit within 7 days. At Coral and Ladbrokes, depositing alone isn’t enough: the spins follow a £10 qualifying bet on slots.
Use this order to avoid tripping over any of those steps.
Register through the offer page and pick the casino welcome offer if a choice is shown.
Complete identity checks: UK operators must verify your age and identity before you deposit or play, including with a bonus.
Set a deposit limit when prompted; since 31 October 2025 you’re asked before the first deposit.
Deposit at least the minimum, using a qualifying method from the table above.
Opt in or accept the offer where the terms ask you to.
Place the qualifying slot bet if the offer has one, then check the promotions or bonus area to confirm the spins or bonus have landed.
If the bonus doesn’t appear after those steps, contact support straight away with the time of your deposit. See why a bonus might not be credited for what to send.
How to avoid max-bet and stake-limit mistakes
Once a deposit match is active, stake size matters. Casumo’s terms set a maximum of £5 per bet while a bonus is active. That figure happens to match the legal cap on online slots for players aged 25 and over, in force since 9 April 2025, but players aged 18 to 24 face a lower legal ceiling of £2 a spin from 21 May 2025. Both are covered on the online slot stake limits page.
The bonus rule and the legal rule are separate. A casino’s max bet rule can be lower than the legal limit and can also cover games the legal limit doesn’t, such as roulette. Breaking the bonus rule is a common ground for removing bonus winnings, provided the rule was set out clearly in advance, which is what the Commission’s guidance on promotional play restrictions requires.
Free spins come with the stake already set (10p on all three of our partners’ spin offers), so there’s no max-bet decision to make while you play them.
Avoiding wagering mistakes: work it out in pounds first
The wagering mistake isn’t usually misreading the multiple; it’s not turning it into pounds and hours. Since 19 January 2026, wagering requirements on UK bonuses can’t exceed 10 times the bonus, under the 10x wagering cap. Ten times still adds up quickly, and the house edge applies to every pound you play through.

Read the table as an average, not a forecast. Any session can land far above or below it, and most short sessions lose. If £250 of slot play in three days is more than you would normally stake, the 10bet bonus is the wrong fit, however generous 100% sounds. Our wagering calculator and the guide on how to calculate wagering requirements let you run your own numbers. 10bet also caps bonus winnings at £1,000, which is another line to note before you start; see our page on bonus max win caps.
Missed deadlines: claim windows, expiry and daily spins
Time limits sink offers quietly. There are usually two clocks: a claim window to accept the reward and a validity period to use it. Coral gives 48 hours to accept the 100 spins, then 7 days to play them. Ladbrokes credits 50 spins a day for 10 days, and each day’s batch has to be claimed before 23:59; miss a day and those 50 spins (£5 of play at 10p) are gone, though the remaining days still count. Each batch then lasts 7 days.
Deposit matches have their own clock: 7 days to wager at Casumo and only 3 days at 10bet, which also requires the first deposit within 7 days of choosing the bonus. A phone reminder set for the morning of each deadline costs nothing. Our full guide to bonus expiry compares the time limits.
Withdrawal mistakes while a bonus is active
Two opposite mistakes happen here. Some players think their own deposit is locked until wagering is finished; it isn’t. The Commission’s guidance on withdrawing deposit funds (opens in a new tab) says operators must let you withdraw your deposit balance at any time, even when a bonus is active, without meeting wagering first. Others withdraw without realising that the terms may then cancel the bonus and anything won with it.
Before pressing withdraw with a bonus running, read the clause on withdrawals and decide which you value more. Our guide to how withdrawals cancel bonuses and the answer to can I withdraw my deposit with a bonus active? explain the trade-off. Also remember that UK withdrawals can’t be reversed once requested, which removes the temptation to cancel a cash-out and play it back.
What common bonus mistakes cost: worked examples
Putting a pound figure on each slip shows which checks matter most. These examples use the published offer terms and assume nothing else goes wrong.

What’s lost
Excluded deposit method
£10 PayPal deposit at Coral
100 spins, or £10 of spin value
Daily claim missed
Ladbrokes day 4 not claimed by 23:59
50 spins, or £5 of spin value
Under the minimum deposit
£15 deposit at Casumo

Wrong sign-up route

Excluded wallet
£25 Skrill deposit at 10bet
The £25 match
Wagering clock runs out
10bet bonus not wagered in 3 days
The remaining bonus and its winnings
None of those losses involves a spin going badly; they all happen before or around play. That’s why a casino bonus checklist does more for most players than any game choice.
Keep records so a bonus mistake can be put right
Even careful players hit problems the casino caused, such as spins that never arrive. A short record makes those fixable. Screenshot the offer terms on the day you join (Coral’s offer, for instance, runs from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027, so terms can change between campaigns), keep deposit confirmations and note the time you placed any qualifying bet. A simple format is suggested in keeping records of bonuses.
If support can’t resolve it, the operator’s complaints process comes first, and it has 8 weeks to respond before you can take the dispute to an independent adjudicator. The steps are in how to complain about a bonus.
The biggest bonus mistake: claiming one you don’t need
A bonus makes sense only if you were going to deposit and play anyway. Signing up because of an offer, or depositing more to reach a higher match, adds spending that the bonus doesn’t cover on average. Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and losses are the likely outcome over time whatever the promotion.
Use the deposit limit prompt, take a time-out if a session runs long, and see when to say no to a bonus if you’re unsure. If gambling is causing worry, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24 hours, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), and GAMSTOP blocks all UK-licensed gambling sites at once.
Where our partner offers fit if you want to avoid mistakes
The offers with the fewest moving parts are the no-wagering spin deals, because there’s no wagering clock or max-bet rule to manage once the spins land. Coral gives 100 free spins after a £10 slots bet (18+, new players, 10p spins on selected games, accept within 48 hours, valid 7 days, no wagering on winnings; PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don’t qualify). Ladbrokes gives up to 500 free spins, 50 a day for 10 days, after £10 played on slots (18+, 10p spins, claim each day by 23:59, valid 7 days, no wagering; several e-wallets and prepaid cards excluded).
PlayOJO gives 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza with a first deposit of £10 or more (18+, new UK customers excluding Northern Ireland, 10p spins, no wagering, via the designated offer link only). Terms apply to every offer; read them in full on the Coral casino bonus, Ladbrokes casino bonus and PlayOJO casino bonus pages before you deposit.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common casino bonus mistake?
Depositing with a payment method the offer excludes is the slip that most often stops a welcome bonus from appearing. The deposit itself works, so nothing seems wrong until the spins or match never arrive. Coral and Ladbrokes both exclude PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid cards from their spin offers, and 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller from its match. Check the list in the key terms first; our guide to how payment exclusions work explains why casinos set them.
Can I get a bonus added after depositing with the wrong method?
Usually not, because the qualifying conditions weren’t met when you deposited. Some support teams will look at a case where the terms were unclear, so it’s worth asking politely with your deposit details and a screenshot of the offer. If the exclusion was clearly stated, expect a refusal. The honest fix is to choose a qualifying method before your first deposit. Our page on why PayPal deposits are excluded covers the most common case in detail.
What happens if I bet over the max bet with a bonus active?
The terms can allow the casino to remove the bonus and any winnings made with it, as long as the max-bet rule was clearly shown in advance. Casumo, for example, limits bets to £5 while a bonus is active. The Commission’s guidance says operators must explain the breach if winnings are withheld. Check the figure before you play and keep stakes below it. See what happens if I break bonus terms for how these disputes tend to go.
Can I withdraw my deposit without losing my bonus?
You can always withdraw your own deposit balance, but the bonus may be cancelled when you do. UK guidance says operators must let you take out deposited money at any time without meeting wagering first. What happens to the bonus is set by the offer terms, and many cancel it along with any bonus winnings. Read that clause before cashing out mid-offer. Our guide to what happens to a bonus if you withdraw sets out the usual outcomes.
How do I avoid missing a free spins deadline?
Note both deadlines when you claim: the window to accept the spins and the period to use them. Coral allows 48 hours to accept its 100 spins and 7 days to play them. Ladbrokes asks you to claim each day’s 50 spins before 23:59, and missing one day loses that batch only. A calendar reminder for each date is the simplest safeguard. The free spins expiry page compares the time limits on current UK offers.
Is it a mistake to claim a deposit bonus with wagering?
Not necessarily, but it is a mistake to claim one without working out the wagering in pounds and days. Casumo’s maximum £100 bonus needs £1,000 of play within 7 days; 10bet’s £25 bonus needs £250 within 3 days. At a 4% house edge those cost about £40 and £10 on average. If that volume is more than you’d stake anyway, skip it. Our guide to whether a casino bonus is worth it runs the full maths.
Do I need a promo code to avoid missing out on an offer?
No code is needed for any of our five partners’ welcome offers as of October 2026. What matters more is the route: PlayOJO says its 80 spins are only available through the designated offer link, and 10bet asks you to choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up. Entering a code from an unofficial site won’t add a bonus and could confuse the claim. See our bonus codes page for when UK casinos still use codes.
Can I claim welcome offers at both Coral and Ladbrokes?
Possibly not, because both brands are run by the same company, LC International Limited, part of Entain. Operators can define a new customer across their group, so an existing account at one brand may rule you out at the other. The only reliable answer is in each offer’s eligibility terms, and support can confirm before you register. Never open accounts in another person’s name to get round it. Our sister site bonus rules page explains how linked brands work.
What should I do if my bonus disappears?
Start by checking whether it expired, was used up, or was cancelled by a withdrawal, since those explain most cases. Look at your bonus history in the account area, then contact support with dates and screenshots. If the casino removed it for a terms breach, it should tell you which rule was broken. You can then use the operator’s complaints process and, after 8 weeks, an independent adjudicator. Our answer to why did my bonus disappear? walks through each cause.
Does a bonus make gambling cheaper?
No. A bonus can add spins or play to a deposit you were already making, but it doesn’t change any game’s odds or the house edge, and wagering means more play and therefore more expected cost. Depositing extra to reach a bigger match increases what you’re likely to lose. Treat any bonus as a small extra on entertainment spending, set a limit first, and stop when it’s reached. Our page on whether gambling with a bonus is safer goes further.
Gambling can be addictive. Free, confidential help is available 24 hours a day from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. Visit GamCare.org.uk and GamCare, or block yourself from all UK-licensed gambling sites with GAMSTOP.
