Scratchcard bonus guide

A scratchcard bonus is a casino offer you can use on online scratchcards: either free cards after a deposit or bonus funds that are allowed on instant-win games. None of our partners has a scratchcard welcome offer in October 2026, and many bonus terms exclude these games or count them at a reduced rate. Here's how the offers work and what they're worth.

Key takeaways

  • No partner offers a scratchcard bonus; their welcome deals are built around slots.
  • Free scratchcards are worth their face value times the game's RTP on average: ten £1 cards at 95% return about £9.50.
  • Scratchcards are often excluded from bonuses or weighted below 100%, which raises the stakes needed to clear wagering.
  • Cards resolve in seconds, so set a deposit limit before you start; speed is the hidden cost of instant-win play.

What a scratchcard bonus is, and what it isn't

Put simply, this is a casino promotion that lets you play online scratchcards, the instant-win games where you reveal panels and win if the symbols match a prize rule. There are two common forms: a set number of scratchcards given after a qualifying deposit or bet, and bonus funds whose terms allow scratchcards among the eligible games.

It's easy to confuse with a scratch and win bonus, which is different. That's a promotional mechanic: the casino gives you a virtual card to reveal a reward, such as some spins or a small bonus, as part of a campaign. What we cover here is a reward you spend on real scratchcard games. The two can overlap, but they're priced and regulated as different things. This guide is part of our casino bonuses by game section.

Scratchcard bonus offers at our partner casinos

There isn't one. As of our 5 October 2026 check, none of our five partners offers a scratchcard bonus to new customers, and none of their welcome offers is aimed at instant-win games:

So if a site advertises free scratchcards for signing up, it isn't one of the offers we list. Read the deposit, stake and wagering conditions next to the word "free" before deciding, and check that the operator is licensed by the Gambling Commission.

How online scratchcards work, and why it matters for a bonus

An online scratchcard is a single game round: you choose a stake, the outcome is decided by the random number generator when you buy the card, and revealing the panels just shows you the result. Some cards have a small bonus game or multiplier, but most are a straight win-or-lose reveal.

Three features change how a bonus behaves on them:

  • Fixed card prices. Many scratchcards come in set stakes, such as 10p, 50p, £1 or more, so a bonus max-bet rule can rule some prices out.
  • RTP varies widely between games. There's no typical figure; the help screen must show the RTP or the chance of winning before you play, under the Commission's remote gambling technical standards (opens in a new tab).
  • Speed. One card can be over in seconds. That makes wagering quick to complete, but also makes it easy to spend more than planned.

Studios such as Hacksaw Gaming list scratchcards and instant-win games alongside their slots, so the same casino lobby may hold both. Treat each card as its own game with its own RTP, not as a slot.

Three kinds of scratchcard bonus compared

FormatHow it worksMain term to checkValue guide
Free scratchcards after a deposit or betA set number of cards at a fixed price on named gamesCard price, named games, expiry, wagering on winningsNumber of cards × card price × RTP
Bonus funds allowed on scratchcardsA deposit match or reload you can spend on eligible instant-win gamesContribution percentage, max bet, max winBonus minus expected cost of wagering

Similar reveal mechanics appear in reward games and pick and win promotions. These are rewards rather than wagers, but the rewards they give still carry conditions.

Scratchcard bonus maths in pounds

The figures below use an example RTP of 95%. That's for illustration only; check the actual figure for the card you'd play.

Worked values for scratchcard bonuses at an example 95% RTP
OfferFace valueAverage returnWageringExpected value after wagering
10 free £1 cards, no wagering£10£9.50NoneAbout £9.50

£10 bonus funds, 10x wagering, 100% weighting£10–£100About £5
£10 bonus funds, 10x wagering, 50% weighting£10–£200 of stakesAbout £0

The method is the same as for any no-wagering bonus or wagered one: work out the stake value, multiply by the RTP, then take away wagering multiplied by the house edge. At 50% weighting, the £200 of stakes needed costs £10 on average at a 5% edge, which is the whole bonus. These are averages over many cards; any one session can go well above or below them.

Scratchcard game weighting and what UK offers usually exclude

Scratchcards don't have a standard weighting. Depending on the casino, terms might count them at 100% like slots, at a reduced percentage, or not at all. Some offers group them under "instant win" or "other games", so search the terms for both words. Our game weighting guide explains how the contribution percentage multiplies the stakes you need.

Common exclusions or limits that affect scratchcard play include:

  • Instant-win and scratchcard categories listed as excluded games;
  • A max bet with an active bonus that rules out higher-priced cards;
  • A cap on bonus winnings, which matters on cards with a large top prize; see our max win guide;
  • Excluded payment methods for the qualifying deposit, such as e-wallets or prepaid cards.

If you're unsure whether a card counts, the bonus tab or a written answer from support is the reliable source. Our list of which games are excluded from bonuses covers the patterns across game types.

Speed, budgets and scratchcard bonuses

The feature that makes scratchcards simple is also the one to watch. A slot spin has to take at least 2.5 seconds in Great Britain, and other online casino games have had their own minimum game-cycle times since 17 January 2025, but a scratchcard round still finishes quickly. One hundred £1 cards to clear £100 of wagering can be done in a short sitting, and the losses arrive just as quickly as the wins.

Practical guardrails help:

  • Set a deposit limit before your first deposit; UK casinos prompt you to set a financial limit at that point. Our guide on how to set deposit limits shows how.
  • Turn on a reality check so you see time and net position during play.
  • Decide the number of cards in advance, and stop when you reach it, whatever the bonus balance says.

If scratchcard play stops feeling like entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133, and GamCare (opens in a new tab) offers live chat.

The cap is in the Gambling Commission's code on rewards and bonuses (opens in a new tab). Advertising of "free" cards must also state the significant conditions, such as a deposit or stake requirement, close to the offer; the ASA's guidance on free bets and bonuses in gambling ads (opens in a new tab) explains what counts. Our pages on the 10x wagering cap and the mixed-product promotion ban give the background.

How to check a scratchcard bonus before you claim it

  1. Find the offer's significant terms and note the qualifying deposit, card price or bonus amount, wagering, expiry and excluded payment methods.
  2. Check which scratchcards or instant-win games the offer names, and whether bonus funds count on them at 100%.
  3. Open a card's help screen and note its RTP and stake options.
  4. Work out the value: cards × price × RTP for free cards, or bonus minus wagering × house edge for bonus funds.
  5. Set a deposit limit, then decide whether the offer is worth it at all.
  6. If you claim, keep your card price within any max-bet rule and track wagering in the bonus tab.

Our casino bonus checklist has the same questions for any offer type.

Frequently asked questions

What is a scratchcard bonus?

A scratchcard bonus is a casino offer you can use on online scratchcards. It's usually either a number of free cards after a qualifying deposit or bet, or bonus funds whose terms allow instant-win games. Both come with conditions such as card price, expiry and sometimes wagering on winnings. None of our partners offers one at the moment; their welcome deals are slot-based. Our game bonuses section covers how bonuses treat other types of game.

Are free scratchcards really free?

Not usually. Most "free" scratchcard offers need a qualifying deposit or bet first, and the cards come with conditions such as a fixed price, named games, an expiry date and sometimes wagering on winnings. UK advertising guidance says an offer shouldn't be called free if you must risk your own money to qualify without that being made clear. Treat the cards as a reward with terms. Our answer to are free spins really free explains the same principle for spins.

Do scratchcards count towards wagering requirements?

It depends on the casino. Some count scratchcards at 100%, some at a reduced rate, and many exclude instant-win games from bonus play entirely. The terms or bonus tab will say, sometimes under headings like "instant win" or "other games". At 50% weighting, £100 of wagering needs £200 of card purchases. Our entry on contribution percentage explains how weighting changes the stakes needed.

How much are 10 free scratchcards worth?

Multiply the number of cards by the card price, then by the game's RTP. Ten £1 cards are £10 of play; at an example RTP of 95%, they return about £9.50 on average. If winnings have no wagering, that's the expected cash value. If there's 10x wagering on winnings, subtract the expected cost of that play, which roughly halves the value at a 5% edge. Check the real RTP in the help screen. Our free spins value page uses the same method for spins.

What's the difference between a scratchcard bonus and scratch and win?

The first is something you spend on real scratchcard games. Scratch and win is a promotion where the casino gives you a virtual card to reveal a reward, such as spins or bonus credit. The first involves wagering on a game with an RTP; the second is the casino choosing a prize to give you, which then has its own conditions. Our page on the scratch and win bonus explains the promotional version in detail.

Do UK slot stake limits apply to scratchcards?

Not in the usual case. The £5 limit for players aged 25 and over and the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds apply to online slots, which the Gambling Commission defines as reel-based casino games. A standard reveal-style scratchcard isn't a reel game, so its stake range is set by the game and casino. A bonus max-bet rule still applies if you're using bonus funds. Our online slot stake limits page has the definitions and dates.

Can I use free spins on scratchcards?

No. Free spins are tied to specific slot games and can't be moved to scratchcards or other instant-win games. Coral's and Ladbrokes' spins are on their selected slot games, and PlayOJO's 80 spins are on Big Bass Bonanza. If you win from spins with no wagering, those winnings are cash and you can then play whatever you like with them, within your limits. Our guide to selected games explains how spin offers name their games.

Why are scratchcards excluded from some bonuses?

Casinos set eligible games to match how they've priced an offer, and instant-win games vary a lot in RTP and prize structure. Some cards also have high top prizes compared with their price, which a bonus win cap is designed to limit. Whatever the reason, the exclusion must be clearly shown in the terms before you opt in. Using bonus funds on an excluded game can lead to the bonus being removed. Our why games are excluded page has more.

Are online scratchcards the same as National Lottery scratchcards?

No. Scratchcards on a casino site are casino games run by the casino under its Gambling Commission licence, with their own RTP shown in the help screen. Lottery scratchcards are a lottery product with separate rules. A single promotion can't mix the two types of product, as the mixed-product ban has applied since 19 January 2026. Our page on the mixed-product promotion ban explains which combinations are no longer allowed.

Is a scratchcard bonus worth it?

Only if you'd enjoy the cards anyway and the terms are simple. Free cards with no wagering are worth roughly their face value times the RTP. Bonus funds with reduced weighting can cost close to their full value to clear. Speed is the bigger issue: cards resolve fast, so it's easy to spend more than intended. Set a limit first. Our guide to whether a casino bonus is worth it applies the same tests to any offer.
