Match bonus vs free spins comes down to one trade: a match bonus grows with your deposit but must be wagered before you can withdraw, while free spins give a small, fixed amount of play that, at our partners, pays winnings as cash. Below we price both in pounds, line up the terms and show who each one suits.
A match bonus scales with your deposit; free spins are a fixed value set by the number of spins and the stake per spin.
Since 19 January 2026 bonus wagering in Great Britain is capped at 10x, which makes match bonuses cheaper to clear than they used to be.
Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO give 10p spins with no wagering; Casumo and 10bet give match bonuses with 10x wagering.
Neither type changes the house edge: over time you should expect to lose some of what you stake.

Match bonus vs free spins: the short answer
A match bonus adds a percentage of your deposit as bonus funds, so a bigger deposit means a bigger bonus, up to a cap. Free spins are a set number of slot rounds at a set stake, so their value is fixed before you play: 100 spins at 10p are £10 of play, whatever you deposit.
The catch on each side is different. Match bonus funds come with wagering requirements, a maximum bet and a time limit. Free spins are tied to selected slots and a short validity period, and in some offers their winnings carry wagering too. At our five partner casinos, the spin offers pay winnings in cash, while the two match bonuses ask for 10x wagering on the bonus.
Put simply: if you plan a small deposit and want something simple, free spins with no wagering tend to suit better. If you were already going to deposit a larger amount and are happy to play slots for longer under rules, a match bonus offers more nominal value. Neither one is a way to make money; both are a way to get extra play, with conditions attached.
How a match bonus and free spins work, step by step
A match bonus
The casino matches a share of a qualifying deposit. The match percentage sets the ratio and the bonus cap sets the ceiling. Casumo’s offer, for example, is 50% up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, so £20 brings £10 and £200 brings the full £100. 10bet’s is 100% up to £25, so a £25 deposit brings £25.
The bonus then sits in a separate bonus balance. You need to stake a multiple of it, called wagering or playthrough, before any money that came from the bonus can be withdrawn. Your own deposit stays yours: under the CMA principles you can withdraw it during bonus play, though doing so usually removes the bonus.
Free spins
The casino credits a batch of spins on one or more named slots. Each spin is played at a fixed stake, which at our partners is 10p. Whatever the reels pay goes into your balance either as cash, which is the case on Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO, or as bonus funds with wagering, which is common elsewhere. Spins must usually be accepted and played within a few days.
Read the offer terms for the qualifying action: a first deposit, or a bet of a set amount on slots.
Use a payment method the terms allow; e-wallets and prepaid cards are often excluded.
Opt in or select the offer at sign-up if the terms ask you to.
For a match bonus, note the wagering target, the maximum bet and the deadline; for spins, note the game list and expiry.
Play within the rules, and keep an eye on progress in the bonus or promotions area of your account.

What a match bonus vs free spins is worth in pounds
Headline numbers don’t compare directly, so convert both into an expected value. For spins, multiply spins by stake and then by the slot’s RTP. For a match bonus, start from the bonus and subtract the average cost of the wagering, which is roughly the wagering total multiplied by the house edge. We use a 4% house edge (a 96% RTP slot) to keep the sums simple; the real figure depends on the game.

These are long-run averages, not predictions. A single session can end well above or well below them, and match bonus funds can run out before the wagering is done, in which case the bonus simply ends. The expected values also assume you play the bonus through; the deposit you put in is exposed to the same house edge once you play with it.
The bigger expected value of a large match bonus comes with a larger deposit and more play. Compared per pound deposited, £10 for 100 Coral spins is similar value to a 50% match, and it carries no wagering.
Wagering: why match bonuses and free spins feel so different
Wagering is where the two types separate most. With 10x on a £25 bonus you need £250 of stakes before the bonus money becomes cash. At £1 a spin that is 250 spins, and with UK slots limited to one spin every 2.5 seconds it takes at least ten minutes of non-stop play, usually much longer. At 10bet that must happen within three days, and 10bet also caps winnings from the bonus at £1,000.
Spins without wagering skip all of that. If 100 Coral spins return £11.40, the £11.40 is cash you can withdraw, subject to the usual verification. Our page on how no wagering spins pay out covers the detail.
Terms that change the value of a match bonus or free spins
Reading the terms line by line matters more than the headline figure. These are the clauses that move the value most.
Maximum bet: Casumo allows up to £5 per bet with an active bonus. Breaking a max-bet rule can void bonus winnings. See casino bonus max bet.
Payment exclusions: Coral and Ladbrokes exclude PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and prepaid cards; 10bet excludes Skrill and Neteller from its welcome bonus.
Eligible games: spins work only on the listed slots, and match bonuses often exclude or down-weight table games. Read about game weighting.
Expiry: Coral gives 48 hours to accept spins and 7 days to use them; Casumo gives 7 days to complete wagering.
Maximum winnings: 10bet caps bonus winnings at £1,000. Check for a max cashout on any offer.
Opt-in: Casumo requires an opt-in, and 10bet asks you to choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up.
UK rules that apply to match bonuses and free spins in 2026
Both types sit under the same UK framework. The 10x cap applies to bonus funds from any incentive, and since 19 January 2026 a single promotion can’t mix gambling products, so a casino match bonus can’t be bundled with a sports free bet. Our 10x wagering cap page sets out the code wording.
Online slot stakes are limited to £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, and bonus max-bet rules sit on top of those limits. The Commission’s guide to free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) also says you should always be able to tell whether you are playing with your own money or bonus funds.
Advertising rules apply too. The ASA’s guidance on free bets and bonuses (opens in a new tab) says an offer shouldn’t be called free if you must risk your own money to qualify without making that clear, which is why you see “bet £10, get 100 free spins” rather than “100 free spins” on its own.

Never raise a deposit just to reach a bonus cap. A bigger match is only worth having if the deposit was money you had already set aside for entertainment. Our bonus finder and the guide to choosing a welcome bonus help you match an offer to your budget.
How to decide between a match bonus and free spins
Set your budget first and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
Work out the face value of each offer at that budget: spins × stake, or deposit × match percentage up to the cap.
Multiply any bonus by its wagering multiple and by about 4% to estimate the average cost of clearing it.
Check the payment exclusions against the method you plan to use.
Compare deadlines with the time you realistically have.
Choose the offer whose rules you can follow comfortably, or skip the bonus.

Frequently asked questions
Is a match bonus better than free spins?
Not automatically; it depends on your deposit and how much wagering you will accept. A match bonus offers more nominal value when you deposit more, but the money must be wagered before it becomes cash. Free spins at our partners carry no wagering, so their smaller value is easier to keep. At a £20 deposit, Casumo’s 50% match is £10 of bonus with £100 of wagering, while £10 of Coral spins has none. Compare more pairs on our compare hub.
Are free spins worth more than a deposit match?
Per pound deposited, free spins without wagering often match or beat a small deposit match. Coral’s 100 spins are worth £10 at face value for a £10 bet, and at a 96% RTP they return about £9.60 on average in cash. A £20 deposit at Casumo brings a £10 bonus whose wagering costs about £4 on average, leaving roughly £6. For larger deposits the match pulls ahead on paper. See free spins value for more examples.
Do match bonuses have wagering in the UK?
Most do, but it can’t exceed 10 times the bonus since 19 January 2026. Before that date many match bonuses asked for 35x or more. Casumo and 10bet both use 10x on the bonus, and the wagering applies to the bonus funds, not to your own deposit, which you can withdraw at any time. The wagering requirements guide explains how to calculate the total and what counts towards it.
Can I choose which slot to play with free spins?
Usually not; free spins are tied to the slots named in the offer. PlayOJO’s 80 spins are played on Big Bass Bonanza, while Coral and Ladbrokes list their selected games on the promotion page, so check there before you opt in. A match bonus is more flexible because you can normally pick from most slots, within the game rules. Our answer to can I choose my free spins slot covers the detail.
What happens to my deposit with a match bonus?
Your deposit stays your money and you can withdraw it at any time, even with a bonus active. The Gambling Commission and the CMA principles say players must not have to meet wagering on their own funds before withdrawing them. Withdrawing usually ends the bonus, and some offers remove bonus winnings too. The bonus withdrawal rules page sets out what operators may and may not do.
Which is better for a £10 deposit?
For £10, a free spins offer is usually the better fit, because the match bonuses at our partners need more than that. Casumo’s welcome bonus needs at least £20. Coral gives 100 spins at 10p after a £10 bet on slots, PlayOJO gives 80 spins with a £10 first deposit, and Ladbrokes gives up to 500 spins over 10 days after a £10 slots spend. All are 18+ with terms. See which bonus is best for 10 pounds.
Can I get a match bonus and free spins together?
Some casinos combine them in a welcome package, but none of our five partners does so on the offers we list. Each partner has one welcome offer, and PlayOJO’s terms say its spins can’t be combined with other offers. Because Coral and Ladbrokes are run by the same company, holding new accounts at both may also be restricted, so read the terms. Our page on welcome packages explains how combined offers usually work.
Do free spins winnings count as cash?
At Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO, yes; the offer terms say there is no wagering on free spin winnings. Elsewhere, spin winnings are sometimes paid as bonus funds that must be wagered up to 10x before withdrawal. You will still need to pass identity checks before cashing out, and payment rules apply. Read do free spins winnings count as cash for the full picture.
Is a 100% match better than a 50% match?
A 100% match gives more bonus per pound deposited, but the cap and the terms decide which is worth more. 10bet’s 100% match tops out at £25, while Casumo’s 50% match runs to £100 on a £200 deposit. At £25, 10bet gives £25 of bonus against Casumo’s £12.50. The wagering deadline matters too: 3 days at 10bet against 7 at Casumo. See is a 100 percent bonus good for the maths.
Does either type lower the cost of gambling?
No; neither a match bonus nor free spins changes a game’s house edge, so the long-run cost of play stays the same. A bonus adds extra play under conditions, but wagering requirements also mean more stakes, and more stakes mean more expected loss. Treat any offer as a bit of extra entertainment, not as a way to win money back. Our page asking is gambling with a bonus safer covers this in more depth.
