Poker bonus: room offers and casino poker

A poker bonus means one of two things in the UK: a poker room offer released as you play against other people, or a casino bonus you might use on house-banked games such as Three Card Poker and Casino Hold’em. Neither is offered by our partners, so this page explains how both work, what they cost and what to choose instead.

Key takeaways

  • “Poker bonus” covers two products: poker room offers (player against player) and casino poker games played against the house.
  • Poker room bonuses are commonly released in chunks as you pay rake; the terms set the pace.
  • Casino poker games often count at a reduced percentage towards wagering, or are excluded.
  • None of our partners publishes a poker bonus; their welcome offers are slot offers. 18+, terms apply.

Poker bonus: two very different products

Search for a poker bonus and you’ll find two kinds of offer mixed together. The first is a poker room bonus, used where you play against other people and the operator earns from rake, a small cut of each pot or a tournament fee. The second is a casino bonus used on poker-style casino games, where you play against the house, as in Three Card Poker, Casino Hold’em or video poker. The terms, the maths and the risks are different.

Neither type is something our partners publish. Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO run slot-based welcome offers, Casumo’s 50% bonus has game restrictions, and 10bet’s match bonus is wagered on slots. We’ll explain both kinds of poker bonus first and come back to the partner offers at the end. Other game-specific guides sit in our casino bonuses by game hub.

How a poker room bonus is usually released

Poker rooms rarely hand over a bonus in one go. Because the room doesn’t profit from who wins a hand, only from the rake, it commonly releases the bonus in small pieces as you generate rake or loyalty points. The typical sequence looks like this:

  1. Opt in to the poker welcome offer and make the qualifying deposit with an accepted payment method.
  2. The bonus sits as a pending amount, often split into equal chunks.
  3. Play cash games or tournaments; each pot raked or tournament fee paid earns points.
  4. When you reach a points threshold, one chunk is released to your cash balance.
  5. Any chunk not released before the deadline lapses, so check the time limit at the start.

Because rake is a cost you pay whether you win or lose a hand, the real question is how much rake you would pay to release each pound of bonus. The terms set that ratio, and it varies widely. The rakeback guide explains the related idea of returning a share of rake, and why casinos give bonuses covers the commercial thinking behind staged releases.

Poker room bonus example in pounds

The figures below are a made-up example to show the method, not any operator’s terms. Imagine a £50 poker bonus released in five £10 chunks, each needing a set amount of rake.

Illustrative poker room bonus: rake needed to release £50
Rake needed per £10 chunkTotal rake for £50Bonus as a share of rake paid
£20£10050%
£40£20025%
£100£50010%

In the first row you would pay £100 in rake to receive £50, effectively getting half of it back. In the last you would need £500 of rake for the same £50. The rake is paid either way, so the bonus only makes sense if you were going to play that volume anyway, and it should never be a reason to play more. Whether a rake-released bonus counts as wagering under the 10x wagering cap isn’t spelled out in the Commission’s announcement, so read the specific terms and ask the operator if it’s unclear.

Casino poker bonuses: games played against the house

Casino poker games use poker hands, but you play against the dealer rather than other players, so the house edge applies just as it does on roulette or slots. These are the games a casino welcome bonus might reach. The figures come from Wizard of Odds’ Casino Hold’em analysis (opens in a new tab) and its Three Card Poker page (opens in a new tab), and assume the player follows the optimal strategy for each game; real play usually costs more.

Casino Hold’emAnte plus call2.16%The ante
Three Card PokerAnte and play3.37%The ante
Video poker (Jacks or Better, full-pay 9/6 table)Single stake per handAbout 0.46%The stake

Side bets such as pair-plus or bonus bets carry their own, usually higher, edges, and paytables differ between games and operators. Always check the game’s help screen for the version you’re playing. Video poker has its own guide on our video poker bonus page, and the table games bonus page covers house-banked card games more broadly.

How casino poker counts towards bonus wagering

Casino bonus terms often group poker variants with other table games and give them a reduced contribution, or exclude them. Video poker is a frequent exclusion because full-pay versions return so much of each stake. The percentage matters more than the edge: at 10%, a £10 hand counts as £1 towards wagering.

The figure is set by each operator, so there’s no industry standard to rely on. Find the game-contribution table in the terms or ask support before opting in. Our game weighting guide explains the mechanics, and the contribution percentage entry gives quick definitions.

Worked example: a £25 bonus on Casino Hold’em

Take a hypothetical £25 casino bonus at 10x wagering. The target is 10 × £25 = £250. Suppose you play Casino Hold’em with a £5 ante and call most hands, so a typical hand stakes about £15 (the £5 ante plus a £10 call).

  • At 100% weighting: £250 ÷ £15 ≈ 17 hands. Average cost at 2.16% of the ante is about 11p a hand, roughly £1.80 in total.
  • At 20% weighting: each hand counts as about £3, so around 84 hands are needed, costing roughly £9 on average.
  • At 10% weighting: around 167 hands, costing roughly £18 on average, most of the £25 bonus.
  • At 0%: the bonus can’t be cleared on Casino Hold’em.

These are long-run averages; a run of hands can lose far more or win. The pattern is what matters: lower weighting means more hands, and more hands means more of the bonus is used up by the house edge. Plug real figures into our wagering calculator before deciding.

Poker bonus terms that change the value

Whether it’s a room offer or a casino bonus, these are the clauses worth reading closely:

  • Release rate (poker rooms): how much rake or how many points release each chunk.
  • Deadline: how long you have to release or wager the bonus; see bonus expiry.
  • Game contribution (casino poker): whether Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker or video poker count, and at what percentage.
  • Maximum bet: a per-hand limit while a bonus is active; Casumo’s, for example, is £5. More on our casino bonus max bet page.
  • Side bets: some terms exclude side bets from wagering even where the main game counts.
  • Prohibited play: collusion, chip dumping and multiple accounts are banned at poker rooms; see multi accounting.
  • Payment exclusions: e-wallets and prepaid cards are commonly excluded from welcome offers.

Our line-by-line guide to casino bonus terms shows where each clause usually sits.

UK rules on poker bonuses since January 2026

Gambling Commission rules apply to promotions offered in Great Britain. These are the ones most relevant to a poker bonus:

The Commission’s announcement, gambling promotions to be safer and simpler (opens in a new tab), sets out the 2026 changes. The online slot stake limits don’t apply to poker, but a bonus can still set its own maximum bet. Our page on the mixed-product promotion ban explains how cross-product offers changed.

Poker, bonuses and keeping control

A staged release can encourage longer sessions to reach the next chunk before a deadline. That is the moment to step back: a bonus is worth having only if it fits play you’d do anyway. Deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks are available at every UK-licensed operator, and GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) blocks all of them at once if you need a longer break.

Where to play: offers instead of a poker bonus

We don’t have a poker bonus to recommend, because none of our partners publishes one. The offers below are slot offers with no wagering on spin winnings, listed as the most straightforward alternatives. All are 18+ and terms apply.

  • Coral: deposit (certain types excluded) and bet £10+ on slots for 100 free spins at 10p on selected games (£10 of spins). Accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days; no wagering on spin winnings. Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don’t qualify.
  • Ladbrokes: deposit and spend £10+ on slots for 50 free spins a day over 10 days, up to 500 spins at 10p (up to £50). Claim by 23:59 each day; spins last 7 days; no wagering. Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers don’t qualify.
  • PlayOJO: first deposit of £10+ for 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p (£8 of spins), winnings paid in cash. New UK customers, excluding Northern Ireland.

A poker stake wouldn’t count as the qualifying bet for Coral or Ladbrokes, which both ask for £10 on slots. Coral and Ladbrokes share an operator, so check the terms before joining both.

Frequently asked questions

What is a poker bonus?

A poker bonus is either a poker room offer, released as you play against other people and pay rake, or a casino bonus that can be used on house-banked poker games such as Casino Hold’em. Room bonuses are typically split into chunks and released as you earn points, while casino bonuses use wagering requirements and game weighting. Both come with deadlines and terms. Neither appears among our partners’ published offers. Our casino bonuses by game hub covers other games.

Do any of your partner casinos offer a poker bonus?

No. Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet don’t publish a poker welcome bonus. Coral and Ladbrokes give free spins after a £10 slots stake, PlayOJO gives 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza after a £10 first deposit, Casumo offers 50% up to £100 with game restrictions, and 10bet matches 100% up to £25 wagered on slots. All are 18+ with terms applying. Compare the full terms on our casino bonuses page.

How is a poker room bonus released?

Usually in stages. The bonus waits as a pending amount, and each time you generate enough rake or loyalty points through cash games or tournament fees, a chunk moves into your cash balance. Anything not released by the deadline lapses. The release rate is the key figure: it tells you how much rake you’d pay for each pound of bonus. Only take one if it fits the play you’d do anyway. Our rakeback page explains the related idea of rake returns.

Does the 10x wagering cap apply to poker bonuses?

It applies to bonus wagering requirements on any UK-licensed casino bonus from 19 January 2026, so a casino bonus used on Casino Hold’em can’t require more than 10 times the bonus in wagering. Poker room bonuses released through rake work differently, and the Commission’s announcement doesn’t say exactly how the cap treats them. Check the specific terms and ask the operator if they’re unclear. Our 10x wagering cap page sets out the rule and its dates.

Does Casino Hold’em count towards casino bonus wagering?

It depends on the operator’s terms. Casino Hold’em is often treated as a table game, with a reduced contribution such as 10% or 20%, and some offers exclude it. At 10%, a hand staking £15 adds only £1.50 towards the target, so clearing a £25 bonus at 10x would take around 167 hands. Find the game-contribution table before opting in. The answer on whether table games count towards wagering explains the usual pattern.

Is video poker good for clearing a bonus?

Video poker has a low house edge on full-pay tables, about 0.46% for 9/6 Jacks or Better played perfectly, but that is exactly why many bonuses exclude it or count it at a low rate. If it’s excluded, playing it with an active bonus can breach the terms. Never assume it counts; read the game list. Our video poker bonus page goes through paytables and weighting in more detail.

Can skill help me profit from a poker bonus?

Not against the house. In casino poker games the house edge stays even with optimal strategy: about 2.16% of the ante in Casino Hold’em and 3.37% in Three Card Poker. In poker rooms you play other people, but rake is taken from pots regardless of who wins, and results vary widely. A bonus doesn’t turn either into a way to make money. Our guide on whether a casino bonus is worth it explains the maths honestly.

Can I combine a poker bonus with casino or sports play?

Not in a single promotion. Since 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission rules ban incentives that mix different gambling products, such as betting with casino, or bingo with casino. Offers like “play poker, get casino spins” or “bet on football, get poker tickets” of that kind are no longer allowed. Operators can still run separate offers for each product, each with its own terms. The mixed-product promotion ban page gives the detail.

Are poker winnings from a bonus taxed in the UK?

No. UK players don’t pay tax on gambling winnings, whether they come from poker rooms, casino poker or bonus funds converted to cash. Operators pay duty instead, and remote gaming duty rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. The tax-free rule covers bonus winnings too, once wagering is complete and the money is in your cash balance. See gambling winnings tax for the general rule.

What happens if I don’t release my poker bonus in time?

Any part of the bonus that hasn’t been released by the deadline normally expires, while chunks already released stay in your cash balance. Your own deposit and any winnings from it remain yours and can be withdrawn. Check the deadline at the start, because time limits on staged poker bonuses can be short. If an offer expires while you’re mid-way, that’s a signal to stop rather than to play faster. Read why bonuses expire for the reasoning behind deadlines.
