Casino birthday bonus

A birthday bonus is a small reward some UK casinos give existing, verified customers around their date of birth, usually bonus spins, a few pounds of bonus funds or loyalty points. It isn't a right, none of our five partners lists one in the offer terms we checked, and it carries the same wagering, expiry and stake rules as any other promotion.

Key takeaways

  • A birthday bonus goes to existing customers, not new sign-ups, and usually depends on marketing consent and a verified date of birth.
  • None of our partners publishes a standing birthday offer; their welcome offers are the only promotions we can describe with checked terms.
  • Since 19 January 2026 any wagering on a birthday bonus is capped at 10x the bonus.
  • Twenty 10p spins are worth £2 of play; at 96% RTP they return about £1.92 on average.
  • Casinos must stop new bonuses for customers showing strong signs of gambling harm, birthday or not.

What is a casino birthday bonus?

A casino birthday bonus is a one-off promotion timed to your date of birth. The casino already holds that date because UK-licensed operators must verify your name, address and age before you can deposit or gamble, so a birthday reward is simply a marketing message triggered by a field in your account. It sits in the family of bonuses for existing customers rather than with welcome bonuses, and you'll find it grouped with other occasion offers on our types of casino bonus hub.

The reward itself is normally modest. Typical shapes are a handful of bonus spins on a named slot, a small amount of bonus money, a points top-up in a loyalty scheme or a pick-a-prize style game. Some casinos send it on the day, some during the birthday week or month, and some only to customers who have played recently or reached a certain tier.

What a birthday bonus is not: a cash gift. Whatever arrives is a promotion, so it comes with the casino's terms attached, and those terms decide whether any winnings can be withdrawn.

Birthday bonus UK: what our partners actually offer

We checked the published offer terms of Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo and 10bet, last on 5 October 2026. None of the five lists a standing birthday bonus. That doesn't prove a casino never sends a birthday message to anyone, because existing-customer promotions are often targeted and unadvertised, but it means we can't describe one, quote its terms or promise you'll receive it.

PlayOJO's help pages describe OJO Levels and daily Kickers, and say not every level gives a reward, while its OJO Club is invitation-only. Casumo and the Entain brands run their own reward areas too. If a birthday perk exists for your account, it will show in the promotions page, the rewards or inbox area, or a marketing email you've agreed to receive. For each brand's ongoing offers, see our pages on Coral offers for existing customers and PlayOJO's rewards for existing players.

Because no partner publishes a birthday bonus, the offers on this page are new-customer welcome offers. They are a different thing: you get them once, when you join, and they come with their own deposit and stake conditions. 18+ and terms apply.

How a birthday bonus usually reaches you

The mechanics vary between casinos, but the sequence below is the common pattern for occasion-based rewards. Each step is a point where the reward can quietly fail to appear, which is why it helps to know them.

  1. Your date of birth is recorded and verified when you open the account. If verification is incomplete, many promotions are held back.
  2. You agree to receive casino marketing by a given channel (email, SMS or phone). Since 1 May 2025 that consent is asked for per product and per channel.
  3. Close to your birthday the casino's promotions system checks whether you meet its rules: account status, recent activity, any restrictions.
  4. A message or account notification tells you the offer exists and links to its terms.
  5. You accept or opt in, usually within a short claim window.
  6. The reward is credited, and its own expiry clock starts. Unused spins or bonus funds disappear when it runs out.

Common forms of birthday casino bonus

Birthday rewards borrow their format from the casino's everyday promotions. The table sets out the shapes you are most likely to meet and the single condition that most affects each one's real value.

Two of these formats deserve extra care. A prize pick works like a bonus wheel or mystery bonus: the headline prize is rarely the typical one. A cashback bonus paid as bonus funds, rather than withdrawable money, is worth less than the same amount in cash.

What a birthday bonus is really worth: worked examples

The site's rule of thumb is to turn every reward into pounds and then subtract the expected cost of any wagering. Remember that RTP is a long-run average across millions of spins, so a single session can land well above or below it.

Example 1: 20 birthday spins at 10p

20 spins × 10p = £2 of play. On a slot with a 96% RTP those spins return about £1.92 on average. If the winnings are paid as cash, that £1.92 is the expected value. If the winnings arrive as bonus funds with 10x wagering, a £1.92 win needs £19.20 of further play, which at a 4% house edge costs about 77p on average, leaving an expected £1.15.

Example 2: a £10 birthday bonus at 10x

A £10 bonus at the maximum 10x needs £100 of wagering. At a 4% house edge the average cost of that play is £4, so the expected leftover is roughly £6, and only if you complete the wagering before the bonus expires. A max-win cap or a ban on certain games can trim it further.

Our expected value guide shows the same method in more detail. The point for a birthday bonus is simple: it is a small extra, worth a few pounds on average, never a reason to deposit or play more than you planned.

Birthday bonus terms to read line by line

Occasion offers often arrive in a short email with a link to the full terms. UK rules say the significant conditions must be shown clearly with the offer and the full terms must be no more than one click away, so you should always be able to find the following before you accept.

  • Eligibility: account in good standing, verified, sometimes a minimum account age or recent deposit. Anything that excludes you must be stated.
  • Claim window: how long you have to accept. Our claim window entry explains how it differs from expiry.
  • Validity period: how long the spins or funds last once credited.
  • Wagering: none, or a multiple of the bonus no higher than 10x.
  • Maximum bet: any per-spin limit while the bonus is active, on top of the legal slot stake limits.
  • Eligible games: a named slot or list; the casino's selected games wording.
  • Maximum win: a cap on what bonus play can turn into withdrawable money.
  • Deposit condition: whether you must deposit or bet first, and which payment methods count.

If a birthday offer needs a deposit or a bet to release it, it is a deposit offer wearing party clothes. Judge it on the same terms as any qualifying deposit and check payment exclusions in our payment methods guide.

UK rules that apply to birthday bonuses in 2026

There is no separate law for birthday rewards. They are incentives like any other, so the Gambling Commission's general rules on bonuses apply in full.

The Commission set out the 2026 changes in its announcement that gambling promotions are to be safer and simpler (opens in a new tab), and the wording of the cap sits in LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab). For the full background see our pages on the 10x wagering cap and the time-based incentive rules.

Birthday offers and your marketing preferences

Most birthday bonuses are delivered as direct marketing, which makes consent the deciding factor. Since 1 May 2025, remote casino, bingo and betting operators have had to let customers opt in to marketing separately for each product and for each channel at registration, with everything switched off by default. Existing customers were asked to confirm their preferences at their first log-in after the rule began.

In practice this means a customer who has agreed to casino emails but not texts may receive a birthday email and nothing by SMS, and a customer who has opted out entirely shouldn't receive targeted birthday promotions at all. The Commission's consumer page on how to stop gambling marketing texts and emails (opens in a new tab) explains your options, and our marketing consent rules page covers the detail.

Why you might not get a birthday bonus

Not receiving a birthday reward is normal and rarely a mistake. The most common reasons are listed below, roughly in order of how often they apply.

  • The casino doesn't run a birthday promotion, or runs it only for some customer groups.
  • You haven't opted in to casino marketing on the channel the offer uses.
  • Your account isn't fully verified, or a document request is outstanding.
  • You have a deposit limit, time-out or self-exclusion in place, or the account carries a bonus restriction.
  • The casino's checks have flagged signs of possible harm, in which case it must not offer new bonuses.
  • You live in Northern Ireland, where the Gambling Commission's rules don't apply and some offers are excluded.

If you expected a reward and think it was promised in published terms, ask customer support to point you to the clause. Our page on why a bonus was not credited explains how to raise it.

Birthday bonus vs other existing-customer offers

A birthday bonus is one of several ways casinos reward people who already have accounts. It's the least predictable of them, because it is targeted and usually unadvertised.

How a birthday bonus compares
Offer typeWho gets itHow oftenUsually needs a deposit?
Birthday bonusSelected existing customersOnce a yearSometimes
Reload bonusExisting customersWeekly or ad hocYes
Loyalty or VIP rewardMembers of a schemeOngoingEarned through play
Welcome bonusNew customers onlyOnceYes, at our partners
CashbackExisting customersDaily, weekly or per gameEarned through play

If you want to compare these in more depth, our reload bonus and loyalty bonus pages show how their terms work. Bear in mind that the Commission's VIP rules from 31 October 2020 require extra checks before anyone is treated as a high-value customer, so bigger birthday perks tied to VIP status come with more scrutiny, not less.

Keeping a birthday bonus in proportion

Birthdays are a time when people relax their budgets, and casinos know it. A birthday reward should only ever be used inside the amount you'd already set aside for entertainment that month. Gambling costs money over time because of the house edge, and a few pounds of bonus doesn't change that.

Useful tools: a deposit limit set before the celebrations, a reality check reminder during play, or a time-out if you'd rather not play at all that week. If gambling is no longer fun, the National Gambling Helpline is free and open 24 hours a day on 0808 8020 133, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), and you can block yourself from all UK-licensed sites with GAMSTOP.

Is a birthday bonus worth claiming?

If a birthday bonus arrives without needing a deposit, carries no wagering or 10x at most, and you were going to play anyway, accepting it does no harm and adds a small amount of play. If it asks you to deposit, bet a set amount or play within a deadline you wouldn't otherwise meet, the honest answer is that it's not worth changing your plans for. The worked examples above put most birthday rewards at a few pounds of expected value.

Advantages

  • Usually small but genuinely extra if no deposit is needed
  • Wagering capped at 10x since 19 January 2026
  • Terms must be clear and one click away

Drawbacks

  • Not guaranteed and often unadvertised
  • Short claim windows and expiry
  • Can nudge you to play on a day you'd planned not to

Frequently asked questions

Do UK casinos give a birthday bonus?

Some do, but it's a discretionary promotion rather than a standard feature. Casinos that run one usually send it to verified existing customers who have agreed to receive casino marketing, and they may limit it to people who have played recently or belong to a loyalty tier. None of our five partners lists a birthday bonus in the offer terms we checked on 5 October 2026, so look in your account's promotions or inbox area. Our existing customer free spins page covers the rewards that are published.

Do I need to deposit to get a birthday bonus?

Not always. Some birthday rewards are credited with no deposit, while others ask you to deposit or bet a set amount first, which makes them a deposit offer in practice. The terms must say so clearly next to the offer. If a deposit is required, check which payment methods qualify, because e-wallets and prepaid cards are often excluded. Our guide to how payment exclusions work explains the common patterns and why casinos use them.

Does a birthday bonus have wagering requirements?

It can, but since 19 January 2026 the wagering on any UK casino bonus can't exceed 10 times the bonus. Birthday spins are sometimes paid with cash winnings and no wagering at all, which makes them simpler and worth more on average. If wagering applies, multiply the bonus by the multiple to see how much play is needed, then by the house edge to estimate the cost. Our wagering calculator does the sums for you.

Why didn't I get a birthday bonus this year?

The usual reason is that the casino doesn't run one for your account, or you haven't opted in to casino marketing on the channel it uses. Other causes include incomplete verification, a bonus restriction, safer-gambling limits or self-exclusion, and signs of possible harm, which oblige the casino to stop offering new bonuses. A missing birthday reward is rarely an error. If you believe published terms promised one, see how to contact support about a bonus.

Can I change my date of birth to get a birthday bonus sooner?

No, and you shouldn't try. Your date of birth is part of the identity information a UK-licensed casino must verify before you can gamble, so it must match your documents. Giving false details breaches the account terms and can lead to winnings being voided and the account being closed. Birthday rewards are optional extras and never worth that risk. Our page on what happens if you break bonus terms explains the consequences.

What is a birthday bonus worth on average?

Usually a few pounds. Twenty spins at 10p are £2 of play and return about £1.92 on average at a 96% RTP if winnings are paid as cash. A £10 bonus at 10x wagering needs £100 of play, which at a 4% house edge costs around £4, leaving about £6 of expected value, provided you finish within the time limit. Any single session can differ widely from these averages. See our guide to free spins maths for more.

Can a casino send me birthday offers if I opted out of marketing?

It shouldn't send targeted promotional messages on a channel you haven't consented to. Since 1 May 2025, remote casinos must ask for marketing consent per product and per channel, with consent off by default. You may still see general promotions when you log in, because the promotions page is part of the site rather than direct marketing. If unwanted messages keep arriving, change your contact preferences and see our page on how to stop bonus offers.

Can I use a birthday bonus on any game?

Usually not. Birthday spins are typically tied to one named slot, and birthday bonus funds normally come with a list of eligible games or contribution rates for wagering. Table games and live casino often count for less or nothing. The eligible games must be stated in the terms before you accept. Our explainer on which games are excluded from bonuses shows why casinos limit games and how game weighting affects wagering progress.

Do birthday bonuses expire?

Yes, almost always, and often quickly. There may be a claim window for accepting the offer and then a separate validity period once it's credited, sometimes as short as 24 hours for spins. If either runs out, the reward is lost and can't normally be reinstated. Check both dates in the terms and only accept when you can use it within your normal plans. Our guide to bonus expiry explains the common time limits on UK offers.

Are birthday bonus winnings taxed in the UK?

No. Gambling winnings, including winnings from bonus play, aren't taxed for UK players, and you don't need to report them to HMRC as income. The casino pays remote gaming duty on its profits, which rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026, but that's the operator's tax, not yours. Wagering and withdrawal terms still decide whether you can cash out bonus winnings. Our page are casino bonuses taxable covers the detail.
