Are VIP schemes safe?

Are VIP schemes safe? At UK-licensed casinos they are far more tightly controlled than they were: since 31 October 2020, operators must check that a customer’s spending is affordable and look for signs of harm before offering VIP rewards. But a VIP scheme still exists to reward high spending, so it carries more risk than ordinary play, and the safest choice for many people is to decline it.

Key takeaways

  • Since 31 October 2020, UK casinos must confirm VIP spending is affordable and sustainable and check for harm before offering VIP incentives.
  • A senior manager with a personal licence must oversee each VIP scheme.
  • VIP rewards are funded by the house edge on your play: the more you’re rewarded, the more you’ve usually staked.
  • Warning signs include personal managers urging deposits, rewards tied to spending targets and gifts after losses.
  • You can decline VIP status, opt out of marketing or self-exclude at any time.

Are VIP schemes safe? The direct answer

VIP schemes at Gambling Commission-licensed casinos are safer than they used to be, but ‘safe’ isn’t the right word for something designed around heavy gambling. Before October 2020, VIP managers could shower big spenders with gifts and bonuses with few questions asked. Today the rules require checks before anyone is treated as a high-value customer, and ongoing checks after.

Even so, a VIP scheme is still a marketing tool aimed at the people who spend most, and the people who spend most include those at greatest risk of harm. This page explains the rules, the warning signs and how to step away. It belongs to our casino bonus questions hub; for how schemes are structured, see our loyalty and VIP bonus guide.

UK rules on VIP schemes since October 2020

The Commission’s rules to stamp out irresponsible VIP practices (opens in a new tab), in force since 31 October 2020, and its high value customers guidance (opens in a new tab) set what operators must do:

What UK casinos must do before and during VIP treatment
StageRequirement
Before VIP statusConfirm the customer’s spending is affordable and sustainable
Before VIP statusAssess evidence of harm or vulnerability
Before VIP statusHold up-to-date ID, occupation and source-of-funds evidence
OngoingKeep verifying and run ongoing checks for harm
GovernanceA senior executive with a personal management licence oversees each scheme
Any timeStop marketing and new bonus take-up if there are strong signs of harm (since 12 February 2023)

LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1 also requires high-value incentives to be consistent with the licensing objectives, including protecting vulnerable people. Read the full detail on our VIP scheme rules page and the related high-value customer glossary entry.

Why VIP schemes still carry extra risk

Every reward in a VIP scheme is paid for by the house edge on customers’ play. If a scheme returns 1% of stakes as rewards, a customer earning £100 of rewards has typically staked about £10,000 – and at a 4% average house edge would expect to have lost around £400 doing it. The reward feels like a gift; the spending behind it is the real story.

Rewards vs average cost at a 1% reward rate and 4% house edge
Rewards receivedStakes behind themAverage loss on stakesNet average position
£10£1,000£40−£30
£50£5,000£200−£150
£100£10,000£400−£300
£500£50,000£2,000−£1,500

Rates differ between schemes, but the pattern holds: rewards rise with spending, and so do losses. That is why schemes that encourage you to hit tiers or targets can pull play upward. The Commission’s code also stops a casino increasing an incentive because a target was hit sooner – see time-based incentive rules.

Warning signs in a casino VIP scheme

  • A personal account manager contacts you to suggest deposits or new games.
  • Rewards or tier status depend on hitting spending or deposit targets by a deadline.
  • You’re offered bonuses or gifts soon after a large loss.
  • Invitations to events or hospitality arrive after periods of heavy play.
  • You’re reluctant to say no to offers because you don’t want to lose your status.
  • You find yourself depositing more to keep a tier rather than for enjoyment.

If any of these feel familiar, the casino should be checking in with you under its customer interaction duties. You don’t have to wait for that: you can ask to leave the scheme, stop marketing or take a break today.

What checks a VIP customer can expect

Being treated as a VIP usually means more questions, not fewer. Expect requests for source of funds evidence such as payslips or bank statements, and the financial vulnerability check that applies to all customers once net deposits pass £150 in a rolling 30 days (since 28 February 2025). Credit-reference ‘affordability checks’ are not live. Our page on KYC rules explains the identity side.

How to leave a VIP scheme or limit it

  1. Contact customer support in writing and ask to be removed from the VIP or high-value programme.
  2. Change your marketing preferences to opt out of casino promotions by email, SMS and phone.
  3. Ask for a bonus restriction so no new promotions are applied to your account.
  4. Set deposit, loss or time limits in your account’s safer gambling settings.
  5. If you want a full break, take a time-out or self-exclude, and consider GAMSTOP for all UK-licensed sites.

Are loyalty schemes safer than VIP schemes?

Open loyalty schemes – points or money back available to everyone at the same rate – avoid some of the personal pressure of a VIP manager, but they still reward play. Our loyalty vs VIP comparison sets the two side by side, and comp points explains how points are usually earned.

VIP and loyalty at our partner casinos

We don’t have published details of VIP programmes for our partners, so check each casino’s site and terms rather than relying on third-party claims; see Coral VIP and loyalty and Ladbrokes VIP and loyalty. PlayOJO publishes its OJOplus feature, which pays money back on every game played with no wagering. Their welcome offers are 18+, new customers only, and terms apply:

  • Coral: bet £10 on slots to get 100 free spins at 10p on selected games, no wagering; accept within 48 hours, valid 7 days. Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don’t qualify.
  • Ladbrokes: play £10 on slots to get 50 free spins a day for 10 days (up to 500 at 10p), no wagering; claim before 23:59 daily, valid 7 days. Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers don’t qualify.
  • PlayOJO: 80 free spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza on a first deposit of £10+, winnings paid as cash; excludes Northern Ireland.

None of these is a reason to join a VIP scheme. Set your limits first and treat any offer as entertainment, not income.

Frequently asked questions

Are casino VIP schemes legal in the UK?

Yes, but they are tightly regulated. Since 31 October 2020, Gambling Commission rules require operators to confirm a customer’s spending is affordable and sustainable, assess harm and hold up-to-date ID and source-of-funds evidence before offering high-value incentives. A senior personal licence holder must oversee each scheme. If an operator breaks these rules, the Commission can take enforcement action. Our VIP scheme rules page sets out the requirements and the dates they came in.

Do VIP players get better odds?

No. Games have fixed RTPs set by their developers, and UK technical standards stop online games adjusting results for particular players. A VIP gets the same odds as everyone else on the same game version. Rewards such as bonuses or money back come from a separate marketing budget, which is itself funded by the house edge on customers’ play. Our house edge glossary entry explains how to work out the average cost of play on any game.

How do I get removed from a casino VIP scheme?

Contact the casino’s support team in writing and ask to be removed from the VIP or high-value programme, then change your marketing preferences so casino promotions stop by email, SMS and phone. You can also ask for a bonus restriction on your account. If you want a complete break, use a time-out or self-exclusion with that casino, or register with GAMSTOP to cover all UK-licensed online sites. See how to opt out of bonuses for the exact settings to look for.

Why did my VIP manager stop contacting me?

Possibly because the casino’s checks flagged something, or because your play changed. Under Commission rules, marketing and new bonus take-up must stop for customers showing strong signs of harm, and VIP status depends on ongoing affordability and harm checks. A casino may also review status after source-of-funds questions. It isn’t a punishment, and you can ask support what changed. If the change worries you, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7. See bonuses and harm indicators.

Can a casino ask a VIP for bank statements?

Yes. Before treating someone as a high-value customer, operators must hold source-of-funds evidence, and they may ask for bank statements, payslips or other proof at any point to meet anti-money laundering and social responsibility duties. The Commission says a withdrawal request shouldn’t trigger requests that could reasonably have been made earlier, unless the law requires them at that point. Our page on what a source of funds check is covers the documents usually accepted.

Are VIP schemes the same as loyalty programmes?

Not quite. Loyalty programmes usually give everyone the same points or rewards at the same rate, while VIP schemes are invitation-only and often add personal account managers and bespoke offers. Both reward play, so both are funded by the house edge. VIP schemes attract stricter rules because they target the biggest spenders. Our comp points page and loyalty vs VIP comparison explain the differences in more depth.

Can under-25s join a VIP scheme?

We couldn’t confirm any rule that bars under-25s from VIP schemes outright, so we won’t claim one. What does apply is the £2 per spin stake limit on online slots for 18–24-year-olds since 21 May 2025, plus the same affordability and harm checks as for any high-value customer. Younger adults are often considered more at risk, so casinos may be cautious. See can under-25s claim bonuses for the age rules that do exist.

What should I do if a VIP scheme is affecting my gambling?

Step away from the scheme and get support. Ask the casino to remove you from VIP status and all marketing, set limits or self-exclude, and consider registering with GAMSTOP to block all UK-licensed online gambling sites for six months to five years. Bank gambling blocks add another layer. Free, confidential help is available from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, GamCare and NHS gambling clinics. Our safer gambling page lists each service.

Have casinos been fined over VIP practices?

Yes. The Commission has repeatedly taken action over failures to protect customers, and most recent penalties cite social responsibility and customer interaction failures, such as Paddy Power Betfair’s £2m settlement in December 2025. The Commission publishes enforcement outcomes so the public can see them. Our operator fines for bonus failings page summarises cases linked to promotions.
