Bonus codes vs automatic bonuses is a question about how you claim, not what you get: a code is typed in at sign-up or deposit to switch an offer on, while an automatic bonus is credited once you opt in and meet the qualifying step. None of our five UK partners needs a promo code for its welcome offer in October 2026.
A bonus code is just one way of opting in; the offer’s value and terms are what matter.
None of our partners needs a code: Coral and Ladbrokes credit spins after a £10 slots bet, PlayOJO uses its offer link, Casumo needs an opt-in and 10bet asks you to choose the casino bonus at sign-up.
Gambling Commission guidance says players must opt in to promotions rather than be enrolled automatically, so ‘automatic’ really means automatic crediting once you’ve chosen the offer.
Forgetting a code, missing an opt-in or using the wrong link are the commonest reasons a bonus isn’t credited.
18+, terms apply; code websites can’t make an offer bigger than the casino’s own terms.

Bonus codes vs automatic bonuses: the quick answer
A bonus code is a word or string of characters you enter at registration or in the cashier to tell the casino which promotion you want. An automatic bonus needs no code: you choose it through a button, a tick box or a link, make the qualifying deposit or bet, and the casino credits it. Neither method changes what the bonus is worth. A code-only offer and an automatic offer with the same terms have the same value.
What differs is how easily you can get it wrong. Codes can be mistyped, forgotten or out of date. Automatic offers can be missed if you don’t tick the right box, don’t use the right link, or pay with an excluded method. In October 2026 all five of our partners use automatic or opt-in claiming, so for them the practical question is how to make sure the offer is switched on. More pairings are on the comparison hub.

How bonus codes work
A code links your account to a specific promotion in the casino’s system. Casinos use them to run several offers at once, to track which marketing channel a customer came from, and to give a particular partner or email list its own version of an offer. A voucher code works in the same way but is often for existing customers, sent by email or text.
Find the code on the casino’s own promotion page or a reputable source, and check its expiry date.
Read the offer’s significant terms before signing up.
Enter the code exactly as shown in the promo code box, at registration or in the cashier, before you deposit.
Make the qualifying deposit with an eligible payment method.
Check your bonus balance or promotions tab to confirm it was applied.
The order matters. Many code-based offers can’t be added after the deposit has gone through. Our guide to using a bonus code covers the timing in more detail.
How automatic bonuses work
Automatic doesn’t mean you get a bonus without asking. The Gambling Commission’s guidance on varying promotions (opens in a new tab) says players must opt into promotions rather than be enrolled automatically, and that an operator can’t change or withdraw a promotion for someone who has opted in except to prevent fraud or similar unlawful behaviour. So an automatic bonus is one that is credited automatically once you have actively chosen it and met the qualifying step.
The choice can take several forms: ticking a box at registration, clicking an opt-in button on the promotion page, picking a casino offer rather than a sports offer, or arriving through a specific offer link. After that, the casino’s system watches for the qualifying deposit or bet and credits the bonus. Our guide on how to opt in to a bonus and the opt-in bonus page explain the variations.

The biggest risk to that value isn’t the absence of a code; it’s missing a step. Not opting in at Casumo, skipping a day at Ladbrokes or registering without PlayOJO’s offer link would cost you the bonus entirely. Our wagering requirements guide explains the Casumo and 10bet sums.
Bonus codes vs automatic bonuses: pros and cons
Advantages
Codes: make it obvious which offer you’re choosing when several run at once.
Codes: easy to decline: leave the box empty.
Automatic: nothing to remember or mistype.
Automatic: the opt-in rule means you still choose, so there’s no surprise enrolment.
Drawbacks
Codes: easy to mistype, enter too late or find expired.
Codes: third-party code lists are often out of date or point to unlicensed sites.
Automatic: a missed tick box or wrong link can lose the offer without warning.
Automatic: if you’d rather play without a bonus, you need to notice and decline it.

Sites listing hundreds of codes can be useful, but a code can never make an offer more generous than the casino’s own terms. Watch for codes promising no-deposit bonuses, huge percentages or wagering above 10x: since 19 January 2026, wagering at a UK-licensed casino can’t exceed 10 times the bonus, so a code advertising more is either out of date or for a site outside UK regulation. Unlicensed sites don’t offer GAMSTOP, UK complaint routes or the Commission’s protections.
The ASA also expects significant conditions to appear with the offer itself, not hidden behind a link; its guidance on free bets and bonuses (opens in a new tab) lists eligibility, deposit and wagering requirements and time limits among them. If a code site leaves those out, go to the casino’s promotion page. Our guide to the risks of offshore casino bonuses explains the gap in protection.
UK rules that apply to coded and automatic offers alike
Every bonus, whatever the claim route, falls under the same rules. Since 19 January 2026, wagering is capped at 10x and mixed-product offers are banned (Commission announcement (opens in a new tab)). Under the CMA principles, you can withdraw your own deposit during bonus play, and significant terms must be shown up front. Bonuses must also stop for customers showing strong signs of harm.
Declining a bonus: easier with codes or automatic offers?
With a code-based offer, declining is simple: don’t enter the code. With an opt-in offer, don’t tick the box or press the button. If a bonus is credited and you’d rather not have it, most casinos let you forfeit it from the bonus tab or through support, and you keep your own deposit balance. Playing without a bonus means no wagering, no max-bet rule and no expiry clock. Our guide on opting out of bonuses shows the steps, and should I opt out of a bonus helps you decide.
Where to claim a no-code welcome offer
Coral comes closest to a truly automatic offer: 18+, new players; deposit (certain types excluded) and bet £10 or more on slots, and 100 free spins at 10p on selected games follow, to be accepted within 48 hours and used within seven days, with no wagering on winnings. The offer runs 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027. Ladbrokes is similar for the first step, then needs a daily claim: 50 spins a day for 10 days at 10p (up to 500), each day by 23:59, no wagering (18+, new customers).
PlayOJO needs no code but must be claimed through its designated offer link: 18+, new UK customers outside Northern Ireland, £10 minimum first deposit, 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p, winnings paid in cash. Terms apply to all three; the full details are on our Ladbrokes free spins and PlayOJO free spins pages.
None of these offers needs a promo code: follow each casino’s own claim steps, and check the qualifying deposit and payment exclusions first. 18+, terms apply.
Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited (Entain). If you already hold an account with one Entain brand, you may not be able to open a new account with another; check the terms before signing up.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a bonus code for UK casino welcome offers?
Not at any of our five partners in October 2026. Coral and Ladbrokes credit free spins after a qualifying £10 slots bet, PlayOJO’s offer is claimed through its designated offer link, Casumo asks you to opt in, and 10bet asks you to choose its casino welcome bonus at sign-up. Other casinos may still use codes, so read each promotion page. Our page answering do casino bonuses need a code looks at the wider market.
Is a bonus with a code better than an automatic bonus?
No. The claim method doesn’t change what you get: value depends on the bonus amount, spin value, wagering, expiry, max bet and max win. A code might be tied to an exclusive version of an offer, but you can judge that only by reading its terms side by side with the standard one. Work out the value in pounds before choosing. The method is set out in how to compare casino bonuses.
What happens if I forget to enter a bonus code?
You may not get the bonus, and many casinos can’t add it after your deposit has been processed. Contact support straight away, explain what happened and ask whether it can be applied; some will help, but they don’t have to if their terms say the code must be entered first. Keep screenshots of the offer you meant to claim. Our page on why a bonus was not credited lists the usual causes and fixes.
Can a casino give me a bonus without me opting in?
Gambling Commission guidance says players must opt in to promotions and not be enrolled automatically. In practice, an automatic bonus is one that is credited automatically after you have chosen it, for example by ticking a box, using an offer link or selecting the casino offer at sign-up. If a bonus appears that you didn’t choose, ask support to remove it. The different opt-in methods are explained in how to opt in to a bonus.
Why does PlayOJO need its offer link instead of a code?
PlayOJO’s welcome terms say the 80 free spins are available only through its designated offer link, which works as the opt-in in place of a code. If you register some other way, the offer may not be attached to your account. The spins are on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, need a first deposit of at least £10, and pay winnings in cash with no wagering (18+, new UK customers, Northern Ireland excluded). Read more on our PlayOJO bonus page.
Are bonus code websites safe to use?
Some are reliable, but many list expired codes or promote casinos without a UK licence. A code can’t override the casino’s terms, so any code promising wagering above 10x, a no-deposit bonus our partners don’t offer, or a huge match should be checked on the casino’s own site. Only play at operators licensed by the Gambling Commission. To see what to check, read telling licensed casinos from unlicensed ones.
How do I claim the Casumo welcome bonus without a code?
Opt in to the welcome offer, then make a first deposit of at least £20. You receive a 50% bonus up to £100, which must be wagered 10 times within seven days, with a maximum £5 bet while the bonus is active; game, play and payment restrictions apply (18+, new customers). A £40 deposit gives a £20 bonus and £200 of wagering. Check that the opt-in shows before paying. Our Casumo how-to-claim page walks through it.
Can I use a bonus code and an automatic offer together?
Usually not. Most welcome offers say they can’t be combined with other promotions; PlayOJO’s terms say so explicitly. Casinos generally let a new customer take one welcome offer, and since 2026 you choose between a casino and a sports offer rather than getting both. If you enter a code, it may replace the default offer rather than add to it. Our page on claiming two welcome bonuses covers the rules.
Do existing customers get bonus codes?
Sometimes. Existing-customer offers often arrive by email, text or app notification, occasionally with a voucher code, and only if you have agreed to receive casino marketing on that channel. Since 1 May 2025, you choose marketing by product and channel separately. Bonuses and marketing must stop for customers showing strong signs of harm. Our pages on free spins for existing customers and reload bonuses cover what to expect.
