Do free spins count towards wagering?

Do free spins count towards wagering? Usually not: the spin itself is paid for by the casino, so it does not chip away at a deposit bonus’s wagering requirement. What can carry wagering is the money the spins win, and that depends entirely on the offer terms. At our three spin partners, the winnings carry no wagering at all.

Key takeaways

  • A casino-funded free spin is not a stake of your money, so it normally adds nothing to another bonus’s wagering total.
  • Free spin winnings may be paid as cash or as bonus funds; only bonus-fund winnings carry a wagering requirement.
  • Since 19 January 2026, wagering on bonus funds in Great Britain can’t exceed 10 times.
  • Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO all describe their welcome spins as no wagering (18+, terms apply).

Do free spins count towards wagering? The short answer

People ask this question in two different ways, and the answer differs for each. The first version is: if I have a deposit bonus with a wagering requirement, will playing my free spins help me clear it? The second is: do the winnings from my free spins have to be wagered before I can withdraw them? This page answers both, with worked pound examples and the UK rules that apply in 2026.

For the first version, the answer is almost always no. Wagering requirements are measured in stakes, and a free spin is staked with the casino’s money, not yours and not your bonus balance. The terms of most offers count only bets placed from your cash or bonus balance towards the total, which is sometimes called turnover or playthrough.

For the second version, it depends on how the spins are set up. If the offer is a no wagering free spins deal, winnings go straight to your withdrawable balance. If the offer pays winnings as bonus funds, those funds come with their own wagering requirement, capped at 10 times under the Gambling Commission’s rules since 19 January 2026. For the bigger picture, see our parent page of casino bonus questions.

Two questions hiding inside one search

Mixing the two meanings up is one of the most common bonus mistakes. Someone with a 50% deposit match and a batch of welcome spins may assume the spins are ticking off the match bonus’s wagering. They are not, so the wagering progress bar does not move while the spins are played.

Does the qualifying bet for spins count as wagering? It is a separate conditionA qualifying bet earns the spins; it is not playthrough of a bonus

The third row matters at Coral and Ladbrokes, where you earn spins by staking £10 on slots first. That £10 is a qualifying bet, a one-off condition that releases the spins. It is not a wagering requirement, and once it is met there is nothing further to play through on the spin winnings, according to the offer terms.

Why free spin stakes rarely count towards wagering

Wagering exists to make bonus money circulate before it can become cash. The casino adds a bonus balance, you stake it a set number of times, and the house edge takes a share along the way. A free spin is different: its stake was never in your balance. Counting it towards a wagering total would let the casino’s own spend reduce the play it asks of you, so terms almost always exclude it.

There is also a bookkeeping reason. A free spin is pre-set at a fixed coin value, often 10p, on named selected games. The spin happens outside your normal balances, and only the result lands in your account. Many cashiers show free spins in a separate rewards area for exactly this reason.

If a particular offer does say free spin stakes count towards a bonus, that will be in its significant terms. The Gambling Commission requires significant conditions to be shown clearly with the offer, so you should not need to hunt for it.

When free spin winnings count towards wagering, and when they don’t

Free spin winnings follow one of two routes. Under the first, they are paid as withdrawable cash: no playthrough, no conversion step. Under the second, they arrive as bonus funds that must be wagered a set number of times before they convert. The Gambling Commission’s player guidance on free offers and bonuses (opens in a new tab) says operators must make it clear whether you are playing with your own money or bonus funds, because bonus funds carry more restrictions.

Worked example: 50 spins with and without wagering

Take 50 spins at 10p, which is £5 of spin value. On a slot with a 96% RTP, the long-run average return is about £4.80. With no wagering, that £4.80 average is yours to withdraw. If the same £4.80 were paid as bonus funds with 10x wagering, you would need £48 of further stakes. At a 4% house edge, £48 of play costs about £1.92 on average, leaving an expected £2.88. Any single session can land well above or below these averages.

None (cash)£0£0£4.80
5x£24£0.96£3.84
10x (UK maximum)£48£1.92£2.88

The pattern is simple: every extra multiple of wagering eats a slice of the expected value. Our guide to free spins maths runs the same sums for 100 and 500 spins.

Do free spins count towards a deposit bonus’s wagering?

Here is how it plays out with a real match offer. Casumo’s welcome deal is a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, with the bonus to be wagered 10x within 7 days and a £5 maximum bet while it is active (18+, opt-in, game, play and payment restrictions apply). Deposit £100 and you get a £50 bonus, so the wagering target is £500 of stakes.

Every £1 you stake from your balances on eligible games moves you towards that £500, subject to any game weighting. A spin you receive free from a separate promotion does not. If you held 20 free spins worth £2 at the same time, you would still need the full £500 of your own and bonus stakes. Any winnings those spins produced would be handled by their own terms, not by the match bonus.

UK rules that shape free spins wagering in 2026

Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission’s social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) limits wagering on bonus funds to a maximum of 10 times. That applies to free spin winnings paid as bonus funds, just as it does to a match bonus. Before the cap, 35x or 50x on spin winnings was common; the Commission’s own example was a £10 bonus with 50x wagering needing £500 of play.

The same change banned promotions that mix gambling products, such as a sports bet that releases casino spins. Our page on the 10x wagering cap covers the rule in full, and does the 10x cap apply to free spins looks at the edge cases.

How to check whether your free spins carry wagering

The answer is always in the offer terms, and under UK rules the important parts should be shown up front with the offer, not buried. These steps take a couple of minutes.

  1. Open the promotion page and read the significant terms box beside the headline, which should list wagering if there is any.
  2. Look for the words ‘no wagering’, ‘paid in cash’ or ‘wager-free’ next to the spin winnings.
  3. If you see a multiple such as ‘10x’, note what it applies to: the spin winnings, the deposit or both.
  4. Check the expiry for the spins and, separately, for any bonus funds they produce.
  5. Look for a cap on winnings, sometimes called a max cashout.
  6. After playing, check which balance the winnings landed in: cash or bonus.

Myths about free spins and wagering

  • Myth: playing free spins clears my deposit bonus faster. Fact: free spin stakes come from the casino and normally add nothing to a wagering total.
  • Myth: no wagering means no conditions. Fact: no wagering spins still have a qualifying deposit or bet, eligible games, a fixed spin value and an expiry date.
  • Myth: wagering on spin winnings is measured against the spin value. Fact: when wagering applies to spins, it is normally set on the winnings; read the terms to confirm.
  • Myth: wagering can be unlimited if I agree to it. Fact: in Great Britain the maximum on bonus funds has been 10x since 19 January 2026.
  • Myth: wagering makes a win more likely. Fact: it only changes how long the money stays at risk; the house edge applies on every stake.

What to do before you claim spins with wagering

Treat any bonus as a way to extend entertainment, not as a way to earn. If an offer carries wagering, set a deposit limit first and decide in advance how much of your own money you are happy to spend while the bonus is live. The Commission’s rule that you can withdraw your own deposit balance at any time still applies, so you are never locked in: the Commission’s guidance on restrictions on withdrawing deposits (opens in a new tab) spells this out.

Frequently asked questions

Do free spins count towards wagering on a deposit bonus?

Normally they do not. A free spin is staked with the casino’s money, and wagering requirements count only bets placed from your cash or bonus balance. So if you hold a match bonus and a set of free spins at the same time, the spins will not reduce the amount you still need to wager. The rare exception would be stated in the offer’s significant terms. Our guide to wagering requirements explains how the total is counted.

Do free spin winnings have to be wagered?

Only if the offer pays them as bonus funds. Many UK spin offers now pay winnings as cash with no wagering, including the welcome spins at Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO, according to their terms. Where winnings arrive as bonus funds, a wagering requirement applies before they can be withdrawn, and in Great Britain that requirement cannot be more than 10 times since 19 January 2026. See do free spins winnings count as cash for more.

Is the £10 bet for Coral or Ladbrokes spins a wagering requirement?

No, it is a qualifying bet. You stake £10 on slots once, and that releases the spins. It is not a multiple of a bonus that you must play through, and the terms say there is no wagering on the spin winnings afterwards. The stake is your own money and the usual house edge applies to it, so treat it as spending. Our glossary entry on the qualifying bet covers how these conditions differ from playthrough.

How is wagering worked out on free spin winnings?

It is usually a multiple of the winnings, not of the spin value. If 100 spins at 10p won £9 and the terms set 10x wagering, you would need £90 of eligible stakes before the £9 converted to cash. At a 4% house edge, that play would cost about £3.60 on average, leaving roughly £5.40. Always confirm the base in the terms. Our wagering calculator runs these numbers for any figures you enter.

Can free spins wagering be higher than 10x in the UK?

Not on bonus funds at a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. Since 19 January 2026, social responsibility code 5.1.1 has limited wagering on bonus funds to a maximum of 10 times, and that covers spin winnings paid as bonus money. Offers that predate the change had to be brought into line. Our 10x wagering cap page explains the rule, the timeline and what the Commission decided not to ban.

Do free spins count towards wagering at the full rate?

Free spin stakes generally do not count at any rate, because they are not your stakes. The rate question, known as contribution percentage, applies to bets you place from your balances: slots often count in full, while table and live games may count at a lower rate or not at all. Check the game weighting table in the terms of any bonus with wagering before you play, and see our guide to game weighting.

Why does my wagering bar not move when I play free spins?

Because free spins are not counted as wagering, the tracker only moves when you stake from your cash or bonus balance on eligible games. If it still does not move during real-money play, you may be on an excluded game, betting above the maximum stake or playing after the bonus expired. Contact support with the time and game name. Our page on how to check bonus wagering progress describes the usual places to look.

Are no wagering free spins worth more than spins with wagering?

For the same number of spins and the same stake, yes on average. With no wagering, the expected return of the spins is yours to keep. With wagering, part of that expected value is lost to the house edge while you play it through. On 50 spins at 10p averaging £4.80, 10x wagering costs about £1.92 on average at a 4% edge. Our page is a no wagering bonus better weighs up the trade-offs.

Do free spin winnings count towards a separate bonus’s wagering?

Only if they land in a balance that the other bonus counts. If spin winnings are paid as cash and you then stake that cash on an eligible game while a match bonus is active, those stakes may count like any other cash bet. The spin itself never does. The order in which balances are used varies, so read the terms. Our guide to how bonus funds and cash are used explains the common orders.

What happens to free spin winnings if wagering is not finished?

Bonus-fund winnings that are not wagered in time are usually removed when the bonus expires. Your own deposit balance, and any winnings made from it, stay yours: the Gambling Commission requires operators to let you withdraw that money at any time. This is why the expiry date matters as much as the multiple. Our bonus expiry guide sets out the time limits on typical UK offers and what happens when they pass.
