Financial risk assessments are coming in stages: the thresholds, and what they mean if you claim a bonus
The Gambling Commission has decided to bring in financial risk assessments, a light-touch credit reference check for high-spending online customers, in stages. They are often called “affordability checks”, a label the Commission rejects. Here are the thresholds, how a check works, and why claiming a typical welcome bonus will not come anywhere near one.

Key points
- The Commission confirmed in July 2026 that financial risk assessments will be introduced in stages.
- Stage 1, at the largest operators, applies to net deposits over £5,000 in 24 hours (£2,500 for under-25s).
- At the final stage the thresholds are £1,000 in 24 hours or £3,000 over 90 days for over-25s.
- About 97% of assessments are expected to be frictionless, with no documents; they do not affect your credit rating.
- The Stage 1 start date has not yet been set.

How a check works
The operator receives an overall assessment and four data points from credit reference agencies: defaults, multiple arrears, significant arrears and whether you have a debt management plan. The Commission says most checks happen in the background, that fewer than 1 in 1,000 accounts may need extra steps (for example after a recent move or name change), and that the checks do not affect your credit rating. They sit alongside the financial vulnerability checks already in place.
What it means if you claim a bonus
- Typical welcome offers are far below the thresholds. The largest qualifying deposit at our partners is £200 for Casumo’s full £100 bonus.
- Verification is separate. Age and identity checks still happen before you play; see how to verify your account.
- Limits are your best tool. Set one at sign-up; see how to set deposit limits and how checks affect bonuses.
