Free spins on hold and win slots are casino spins used on games where money symbols lock in place during a respin feature, such as Wolf Gold or Money Train. Each 10p spin averages roughly 9.6p back at these games' RTPs, and because coin prizes are multiples of the stake, every prize in the feature is scaled to that 10p.
In a hold and win feature, money symbols stick while the rest of the grid respins; landing a new one usually resets the respin count.
Coin values and fixed jackpots are multiples of your stake, so at 10p they are small in pounds: Wolf Gold's 2,500x cap is £250.
Our examples range from medium volatility (Wolf Gold, Chilli Heat) to very high (Big Bass Hold & Spinner).
100 spins at 10p are £10 of play and average about £9.60 to £9.64 back on these games, before any wagering.
None of our partners names a hold and win slot for its spins; PlayOJO's are on Big Bass Bonanza.

Free spins on hold and win slots: the short version
Hold and win (also sold as hold and spin, money respin or cash collect, depending on the studio) describes a bonus feature rather than a theme. It starts when enough special money symbols land at once. Those symbols lock in place, the other positions respin, and every new money symbol that lands also locks. The feature ends when the respins run out or the grid fills, and the values on the locked symbols are added together.
With a casino free spins offer, the spins work exactly like paid spins at the offer's fixed stake, normally 10p. If the feature triggers during one of them, you play the respins as part of that spin, and whatever it pays counts as winnings from your free spins under the offer terms. Live offers are compared on our free spins hub.
18+. Free spins offers come with conditions such as a qualifying deposit or bet, a set stake, eligible games and expiry. Terms apply.
How a typical hold and win feature runs
Details vary by game, but the usual format follows these stages:
A trigger number of money symbols (often six or more) lands on a single spin.
Those symbols lock in place, each showing a cash value or a jackpot label.
You receive a small number of respins, commonly three.
Every new money symbol that lands locks too, and usually resets the respins to the starting number.
When no respins remain, or every position is filled, all the locked values are paid out together.
Some games add collector symbols that gather the values around them, symbols that open extra rows, or multipliers. Big Bass Hold & Spinner blends the fishing-slot formula with a coin feature, and Nolimit City's Dead Canary has a Canary Bonus Round described by its specification as a hold-and-win style feature triggered by caged canary scatters (Dead Canary specification (opens in a new tab)). Always read the help screen of the game your spins are on.
Why coin values and jackpots shrink at a 10p free spin stake
Every prize in a hold and win feature is tied to the stake. A coin showing 5x is 50p on a 10p spin; a fixed jackpot labelled 1,000x is £100. This is why a feature that looks exciting in a video at a high stake pays much less in pounds on a casino free spin. Nothing is unfair about it: the multipliers, and the RTP, stay the same at every stake.
Wolf Gold shows how this works. Its specification lists a max win of 2,500x the stake, and that figure includes the fixed Mega jackpot. On a 10p free spin, the very top outcome is therefore £250. Our Wolf Gold free spins page covers that game in more depth, and the coin value glossary entry explains how stake and coin size relate.
Hold and win slots with free spins pages: RTP, volatility and max win
These games are built around a respin or money-symbol feature and have verified specifications in our data. Max wins are converted to pounds at 10p.
Hold and win slots: published figures at a 10p stake
Thunderkick's Midas Golden Touch is a close relative: its main feature is sticky re-spins that lock winning symbols while the other reels spin again (Midas Golden Touch specification (opens in a new tab)), with a 96.1% RTP. It isn't a money-symbol game, but the hold-then-respin rhythm is similar.
The spread of max wins is striking: from £250 on Wolf Gold to £15,000 on Money Train 4 at the same 10p stake. Higher caps generally come with higher volatility, meaning more of the RTP sits in rare, large outcomes. See our high volatility slots page for that side of the picture.
What 50 and 100 free spins on hold and win slots are worth
Average return = spins × stake × RTP. Here's how that looks on four of the games above:
Average return from 10p free spins on hold and win slots
Slot (RTP)
50 spins (£5)
100 spins (£10)
500 spins (£50)
Wolf Gold (96.01%)

Big Bass Hold & Spinner (96.07%)

£4.82
£9.64
£48.20
Chilli Heat (about 96.5%)
About £4.83
About £9.65
About £48.25
The averages barely differ. What differs is the shape. On a medium volatility game like Wolf Gold, a 100-spin batch is more likely to land somewhere between a few pounds and the average, because the respin feature pays smaller amounts more often. On Money Train 2 or Big Bass Hold & Spinner, most batches fall short of £9.64 and a rare one goes far above it. The average win from 100 free spins page explains why the typical result sits below the average on volatile games.
Can casino free spins trigger the hold and win feature?
In most cases yes. A casino free spin is an ordinary spin paid for by the operator, so if six money symbols land, the feature starts as normal. The respins inside the feature don't use up any more of your free spins, and the final payout is added to your free spins winnings.
Two things to check: whether the offer caps total winnings from the spins, and what happens if you close the game or lose connection mid-feature. Most games resume an unfinished feature next time you open them, but the offer's expiry clock keeps running. Our answers on whether free spins can trigger the bonus round and what happens if a game crashes during free spins cover both.
No wagering vs wagering on hold and win free spins
Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission's social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) limits wagering to 10 times the bonus. Here's what that means for £9.60 of winnings from 100 Wolf Gold spins (house edge about 3.99%):
No wagering: the £9.60 average is paid as cash.
5x wagering: you'd stake £48 more, costing about £1.92 on average and leaving roughly £7.68.
10x wagering: you'd stake £96 more, costing about £3.83 on average and leaving roughly £5.77.
On higher volatility hold and win games, the bonus balance is also more likely to run out before the wagering is done. That's the main reason no wagering free spins tend to be worth more than the same spins with a playthrough.
Is a hold and win slot a good fit for your free spins?
Advantages
The feature is easy to follow: locked symbols, respins, one payout
Medium volatility options such as Wolf Gold give steadier results from a small batch
Fixed jackpot labels make the top prizes clear in the paytable
The respins don't use up your free spins
Drawbacks
Jackpots and coin values are small in pounds at 10p
Triggering the feature often needs several symbols on one spin, which can take many spins
Big caps on games like Money Train 4 are extremely rare outcomes
Wagering on winnings reduces the expected value
Free spins are a way to try a game, not a way to make money; the house edge applies to every spin and every respin. Set a budget before you start and stick to it.
Design rules since 31 October 2021: no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebratory effects for a result that pays back less than the stake.
No feature buys: games supplied to Great Britain don't let you pay to jump straight into the hold and win round.
Clear terms: offer terms must be clear and readily available, including any cap on free spins winnings.
More detail is on our slot game design rules page; none of these rules changes a game's RTP.

Frequently asked questions
What is a hold and win slot?
A hold and win slot is a game with a bonus feature where special money symbols lock in place while the other positions respin. Each new money symbol also locks and usually resets the respin count, and the feature ends when the respins run out or the grid fills. The values on the locked symbols are then paid together. Studios use different names, such as Money Respin or hold and spin. Our Big Bass Hold & Spinner free spins page looks at one example in detail.
How much is a jackpot worth on a 10p free spin?
A fixed jackpot in a hold and win feature is a multiple of the stake, so on a 10p free spin it's worth that multiple times 10p. A 1,000x jackpot, for example, would be £100 on a 10p spin. Wolf Gold's published 2,500x max win includes its fixed Mega jackpot, which makes £250 the top outcome at 10p. Progressive jackpots work differently and are covered on our jackpot slots free spins page.
Do respins in a hold and win feature use up my free spins?
No: the respins inside a hold and win feature belong to the spin that triggered it, so they don't count against your free spins total. You play them out, the locked values are added up, and that payout joins your free spins winnings. Your next free spin starts once the feature has finished. If the game freezes mid-feature, it normally resumes when reopened. See what happens if you close the game during free spins for more.
Which hold and win slot has the biggest max win?
Among the hold and win games we have verified figures for, Money Train 4 has the highest published max win at 150,000x, which is £15,000 at a 10p stake. Money Train 3 follows at 100,000x and Money Train 2 at 50,000x. These figures are rare ceilings rather than likely outcomes, and offers may also cap winnings from free spins. Our Money Train 4 free spins page has more on that game's specification.
Are hold and win slots high volatility?
Not always. In our data, Wolf Gold and Chilli Heat are rated medium, while Money Train 2, 3 and 4 and Dead Canary are rated high, and Big Bass Hold & Spinner is very high. Medium games tend to pay the feature in smaller amounts more often, while high volatility games hold more of their return for rare, bigger outcomes. Our volatility glossary entry explains the term, and the low volatility slots page covers steadier games.
Can I use free spins on Wolf Gold?
Only if Wolf Gold is named in the offer's eligible games; free spins can't be moved to a different slot. Our partners don't list Wolf Gold as their spin game: PlayOJO's welcome spins are on Big Bass Bonanza, and Coral and Ladbrokes publish their selected games on their promotion pages. If you open a game that isn't eligible, the spins simply won't appear. Our answer on choosing your free spins slot explains how to find the right list.
How much are 100 free spins on Money Train 2 worth?
100 free spins at 10p on Money Train 2 are £10 of play and return about £9.64 on average at the published 96.40% RTP. The game is rated high volatility, with a max win of 50,000x (£5,000 at 10p), so the typical batch returns less than the average and a rare one returns much more. Any wagering on winnings reduces the expected amount you keep. See Money Train 2 free spins for a full breakdown.
Is the hold and win feature the same as a free spins round?
No: a hold and win feature is a respin game with locked money symbols, while a free spins round is a set of bonus spins, often with extra wilds or multipliers. Some slots have both; Money Train games and Big Bass Hold & Spinner mix these ideas in different ways. Casino free spins can trigger either type if the right symbols land. Our free spins round glossary entry and bonus round entry explain the difference.
Do hold and win free spins winnings have wagering?
That's set by the offer, not by the game. Many UK free spins offers now pay winnings in cash with no wagering, and since 19 January 2026 any wagering can't exceed 10 times the bonus. With 10x wagering on £9.60 of winnings, you'd stake £96 more, costing about £3.83 on average at Wolf Gold’s house edge of roughly 3.99%. All three of our partners' spin offers state no wagering on winnings. Our free spins wagering explainer covers the details.
