Free spins on book slots are casino spins credited on games built around a book symbol, such as Book of Dead, usually at 10p a spin. At around 96% RTP, 100 of them return about £9.60 on average, but almost all of that value hangs on one moment: whether the bonus round lands and which symbol the book picks to expand.
100 spins at 10p are £10 of play; on Book of Dead (96.21% RTP) the long-run average return is about £9.62.
Book slots are high or very high volatility, so most small batches of spins return less than average and a few return much more.
At 10p, a 5,000x max win is £500; Book of Shadows tops our examples at 30,338x, or £3,033.80.
None of our partners lists a book slot as its spin game: PlayOJO uses Big Bass Bonanza, and Coral and Ladbrokes publish their own selected games.

Free spins on book slots: what you are really getting
A free spins offer on a book slot gives you a set number of spins at a fixed stake, normally 10p, on a game where one symbol (the book) acts as both wild and scatter. The spins themselves are the same as on any other slot. What changes is how the value is spread: book games pay small line wins in the base game and keep most of their return for the bonus round, where a randomly chosen symbol expands to fill whole reels.
That shape matters more for a small bundle of casino spins than for a long session. With 50 or 100 spins you may not see a single bonus round, so the result often lands well below the average. If you do trigger one with a high-paying expanding symbol, the batch can return many times its face value. Neither outcome is predictable, and the house edge applies to every spin. Our free spins hub compares the offers that are actually available.
18+. Free spins offers always come with conditions, such as a qualifying deposit or bet, a fixed stake and an expiry date. Read the terms before you opt in.
How the book mechanic shapes free spins on book slots
In the classic book design, landing three or more book symbols starts a round of bonus spins. Before it begins, one regular symbol is picked at random to become a special expanding symbol. Whenever enough of that symbol land during the round, each one grows to cover its whole reel and pays across every line, even on reels that aren't next to each other. That's where book slots get their big swings.
Three consequences follow for anyone using casino free spins on one of these games:
The chosen symbol matters hugely. A bonus round with a low-value card symbol expanding often pays modestly; the same round with the top character symbol can pay hundreds of times the stake.
Base-game wins are mostly small. Ten paylines on a 5 × 3 grid tend to produce frequent, low returns between bonus rounds.
Retriggers can extend the round. Many book games let three more books add extra spins, using the same expanding symbol. Check the game's help screen for the exact rules, and see our page on retriggering free spins.
Developers vary the formula. Book of Shadows, for example, has expandable layouts and more paylines, while Book of Oz comes from a different studio with its own extras. Each game's help screen sets out the exact feature rules, and that's the version that applies to your spins.
Book slots with free spins pages: RTP, volatility and max win at 10p
These are the book-themed games we have verified specifications for. Max win at 10p is simply the published multiplier times the stake. Remember that a casino can run a lower RTP version than the top figure the developer publishes, so check the game's information screen for the figure in use.
Book slots: published figures and what they mean at 10p
Every game here is rated high volatility or above, which is the defining trait of the genre. If you want a different feel, our pages on Egyptian slots and low volatility slots cover games with other designs. Tome of Madness has a book in its name but plays as a cluster pays game, so it behaves quite differently.
What 50, 80 and 100 book slot free spins are worth on average
The face value of a spin bundle is spins × stake. The average return is that face value × RTP. Here is how it works out on three book games with different published RTPs:

The gap between versions looks small per batch, about 15p on 100 spins between the lowest and highest figures here, but it is real money taken from the average. More important is the spread around those averages. On a high volatility game, a typical 100-spin batch might return £2 or £3, while an occasional batch returns £50 or more; the average of £9.62 only emerges over very many batches. Our guide to free spins maths goes deeper on averages and spread.
No wagering vs wagering on book slot free spins
Since 19 January 2026, any wagering on a bonus at a British-licensed casino can't exceed 10 times the bonus, under the Gambling Commission's social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab). Free spins winnings with no wagering are paid straight into your cash balance; winnings with wagering go into a bonus balance you have to play through first.
Here's the difference on a book slot, using Book of Dead's 96.21% RTP (a house edge of about 3.79%):
100 spins at 10p return an average of £9.62.
With no wagering, that £9.62 average is cash you can withdraw (subject to the usual checks).
With 10x wagering on winnings, you'd need to stake £96.20 more. At a 3.79% edge that costs about £3.65 on average, leaving roughly £5.97.
On a high volatility book slot, the wagering phase also adds a big chance of the bonus balance running out before you finish.
Why book slot free spins often return little, then occasionally a lot
Think of a 100-spin batch on a book game as two different outcomes stacked together. Most of the time, you'll see a string of small line wins from card symbols and no bonus round, and the batch ends with a few pounds. Less often, three books land, the round begins, and the random symbol choice decides whether the payout is modest or substantial.
Advantages
A single bonus round can return far more than the face value of the spins
Simple 10-line layouts make the paytable easy to read
Retriggers can extend a good round
No-wagering spins mean any winnings are cash
Drawbacks
Many batches never reach the bonus round
Long dry spells are normal between features
Lower RTP versions of some titles exist
A max win at 10p is rare; the published multiplier is a ceiling, not a target
UK rules that apply to book slots and their free spins
Book slots played at UK-licensed casinos follow the same online slot rules as every other game:
Stake limits: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds (since 21 May 2025), per the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). Bonus max-bet rules sit on top.
Game design: since 31 October 2021, no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebrating a loss as a win. See our slot game design rules page.
Feature buys: games supplied to Great Britain don't offer the option to buy straight into the bonus round, so the book feature has to be triggered in play.
Age checks: your age and identity must be verified before you deposit or play, including demo games.
These rules don't change the value of a spin, but they do mean every book slot spin runs at a set pace and every bonus round is earned the same way. The stake limits apply per spin, so a 10p free spin sits far below them.
Where to use free spins on book slots: our partner offers
To be straight with you: none of our five partners runs a welcome offer tied to a book slot. The closest match in value terms is PlayOJO, whose spins also carry no wagering. New UK customers aged 18+ (excluding Northern Ireland) who make a first deposit of at least £10 get 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each, so £8 of play, with winnings paid in cash. It can't be combined with other offers and is only available through the designated link; terms apply. Big Bass Bonanza is a high volatility fishing game with a 96.71% RTP and a 2,100x cap (£210 at 10p), so the swings feel similar. More on our PlayOJO free spins page.
Coral gives new players (18+) 100 free spins at 10p after a deposit and a £10 bet on slots, running from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027. The spins are on selected games, must be accepted within 48 hours and used within 7 days, and winnings carry no wagering. Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify. The offer lists its selected games; check the promotion page to see what's included. Our Coral free spins page explains the terms.

Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, so check the terms if you already hold an account with one of them.

Frequently asked questions
What is a book slot?
A book slot is a game where one book symbol acts as both the wild and the scatter, and the bonus round uses a randomly chosen expanding symbol. Three or more books usually start the round, and during it the chosen symbol can grow to fill whole reels and pay on every line. Book of Dead and Book of Ra Deluxe are the best-known examples. The format tends to be high volatility, with a lot of value held back for the feature. Our Book of Dead free spins page shows how this plays out with casino spins.
How much are 100 free spins on Book of Dead worth?
100 free spins on Book of Dead at 10p are worth £10 in stakes and return about £9.62 on average at the published 96.21% RTP. That average is a long-run figure, though. Because the game is high volatility, many 100-spin batches return only a few pounds, while the occasional batch with a strong bonus round returns much more. If the winnings carry wagering, the expected value drops further. The average win from 100 free spins page explains how to work this out for any slot.
Can casino free spins trigger the bonus round on a book slot?
Usually yes: casino free spins are normal spins at a fixed stake, so landing three or more books during them typically starts the game's own bonus round. The extra spins from that round are played at the same stake, and their winnings are treated under the offer's terms. Some offers word this differently, so check the terms if you're unsure. Our answer on whether free spins can trigger the bonus round covers the common wording.
Are book slots good for free spins?
Book slots suit people who accept that most small batches return little in exchange for an occasional larger result. The average value of a 10p spin is about the same as on other slots with similar RTP, around 9.6p, but the spread is wide. If you prefer steadier results from a short bundle, a lower volatility game fits better. Our comparison of free spins on low vs high volatility slots sets out the trade-off plainly. Whichever you choose, a spin bundle is entertainment, not a way to make money.
What is the most I can win from 10p spins on a book slot?
At 10p a spin, a book slot's top prize is its max win multiplier times 10p, so a 5,000x cap means £500. Among our examples, Book of Shadows goes highest at 30,338x, or £3,033.80 at 10p. Reaching a max win is extremely rare, and the offer itself may also cap winnings from free spins. Always read the offer terms for any maximum. Our page on casino bonus max win explains how these caps work.
Why is the RTP on my book slot lower than the published figure?
Many developers supply the same game at several RTP settings, and the casino chooses which one to run. Book of Ra Deluxe, for example, has a published 95.1% figure and a 94.26% version. The game's information screen shows the figure in use, and UK technical standards require that information to be available. A lower version reduces the long-run average, by roughly 8p per 100 spins at 10p in that example. See our RTP glossary entry for how the figure is calculated.
Do book slot free spins have wagering requirements?
It depends on the offer, not the slot. Many UK free spins offers now pay winnings as cash with no wagering, while others put winnings into a bonus balance with wagering of up to 10 times, the maximum allowed since 19 January 2026. With wagering, high volatility book slots make it more likely the balance runs out before you finish. Our guide to free spins wagering shows the maths for both cases.
Can I choose a book slot for my welcome free spins?
Usually not: welcome free spins are tied to the games named in the offer terms, and you can only use them there. If the list doesn't include a book slot, the spins won't work on one. Our partners' spins, for example, are on Big Bass Bonanza at PlayOJO and on selected games listed in Coral's and Ladbrokes' promotions. Our answer on choosing your free spins slot explains where to find the eligible list and what happens if you open the wrong game.
Is Book of Dead the same as Legacy of Dead?
No, though both come from Play'n GO and share the same 5 × 3 layout, 10 paylines, high volatility and 5,000x max win. Legacy of Dead has a higher published RTP of 96.58%, compared with 96.21% for Book of Dead, which is worth about 4p more per 100 spins at 10p. Their bonus round rules differ, so read each game's help screen. Our Legacy of Dead free spins page covers that game on its own terms.
Are book slots allowed to have a buy-bonus option in the UK?
No: slots supplied to players in Great Britain don't offer feature buys, so the book bonus round can only be reached by landing the scatters in normal play. That applies whether you're using paid spins or casino free spins. Other UK design rules apply too, including no autoplay and a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin. Our page on slot game design rules explains each requirement and when it started.
