Free spins verification is the age and identity check a UK casino must complete before you can play any spins, even ones you didn't pay for. Since 7 May 2019, licensed operators have had to verify your name, address and date of birth before you gamble. There is no legal 'no verification' route to spins at a UK-licensed casino.
Age and identity must be verified before you can deposit or play, including with free spins or a bonus.
Most checks run automatically against databases; documents are requested only if those checks can't confirm you.
A casino can't hold back a withdrawal to ask for ID it could reasonably have asked for earlier.
All our partners verify before play; PlayOJO says it aims to check documents within 12 hours. 18+, terms apply.

What free spins verification means
When you sign up for a spins offer, the casino has to confirm two things before you can play: that you are at least 18, and that you are who you say you are. That process is often called KYC, short for 'know your customer'. It applies to every account, but people notice it most with spins offers, because the spins seem ready to use straight away and then can't be played until checks are done.
This page sits under our free spins hub. For the general walkthrough of account checks, our guide to verifying your casino account covers deposits and withdrawals too, and the glossary explains KYC in brief.
The UK rule behind free spins verification
Licence condition 17.1.1 says operators must obtain and verify information to establish a customer's identity, including name, address and date of birth, before the customer is allowed to gamble. The Gambling Commission's customer identity verification condition (opens in a new tab) sets this out. The same condition says that before you deposit, you should be told what documents or information might be needed, when, and how to provide them.
When the rules came in on 7 May 2019, the Commission said explicitly that checks must happen before a customer can deposit or gamble, including with a free bet or bonus. Before then, operators had 72 hours to complete age checks, which allowed some play first. Customers must also be age-verified before they can use free-to-play demo versions of gambling games. The page on age verification before play gives the full background.

How the checks usually work
The Gambling Commission's age and ID verification guide (opens in a new tab) describes the usual order. First, the casino runs your details through databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll. If those confirm you, nothing more is needed and you may not notice the check at all. If they can't, you'll be asked for documents such as a passport, driving licence or household bill. If fraud is suspected, a selfie may be requested. The checks also confirm whether you have self-excluded.
Register with your full legal name, current address and date of birth, exactly as they appear on your documents.
Wait for the automatic database check; many accounts pass at this stage.
If asked, upload clear photos or scans of the documents requested, using the casino's upload tool.
Wait for confirmation that your account is verified.
Make the qualifying deposit or bet for the spins offer.
Play the spins before they expire.

Free spins verification at our partner casinos
Our partners publish different levels of detail about verification:
PlayOJO: its help page lists a passport, driving licence, ID card or utility bill as accepted documents, uploaded through its upload tool rather than by email. PlayOJO says it aims to verify within 12 hours and that you should contact support if you haven't heard back within 48 hours. It also allows up to two non-verified cards at a time.
Coral and Ladbrokes: both are run by LC International Limited. Their help centres cover payments in detail, but we haven't listed their verification timings here; check each help centre or ask support.
Casumo and 10bet: these don't have spins welcome offers, but the same verification rules apply to their deposit bonuses.
If the database check confirms you, verification can be almost instant. If documents are needed, it depends on the casino's review queue and on whether your documents are clear and match your account. PlayOJO's 12-hour target is the only partner timing we can quote from published help pages. Common causes of delay are covered in how long casino verification takes.
Watch the spins clock. Coral gives 48 hours to accept its spins and 7 days to use them; Ladbrokes requires each day's spins to be claimed before 23:59 and used within 7 days. If you qualify before you're verified, ask support what happens to the claim window, and get the answer in writing if you can.
Verification and withdrawing spin winnings
Rules made in 2019 stop a casino from making ID a condition of withdrawal if it could reasonably have asked for it earlier, unless another legal obligation requires it at that point. The Commission's identity verification guidance (opens in a new tab) also says terms shouldn't let an operator remove funds because a player couldn't verify their identity. If your winnings from spins are held while the casino asks for documents it should have requested at sign-up, that is worth raising as a complaint.
Checks on where your money comes from are different. Operators can ask about source of funds for anti-money-laundering reasons, or because of signs you might be gambling money you don't have. Those checks can come later, as your activity changes. The explainer on what a source of funds check is explains them, and why was my withdrawal declined? covers other causes.
Can you get free spins without verification?
Not from a casino licensed in Great Britain. Offers promising 'no ID' or 'no KYC' spins come from sites that aren't following UK rules, which usually means they aren't licensed here. That brings real risks: no Gambling Commission oversight, no access to UK complaint routes and no GAMSTOP coverage. The casino bonuses without verification page explains why such offers aren't what they seem, and our guide to offshore casino bonus risks covers what you lose.
Common free spins verification problems
Name or address mismatch. Small differences, such as a previous address, can stop the database check. Update your details and upload a document that matches.
Blurry or cropped documents. Upload clear images with all corners visible.
Payment method in someone else's name. Third-party payment methods normally aren't allowed and can hold up verification.
Self-exclusion match. If you've self-excluded, checks should flag it and the casino shouldn't let you play. That is the system working.
Spins expired during review. Contact support promptly and keep a record of when you qualified.
If support can't resolve a problem, every UK-licensed operator has a complaints procedure. The guide to complaining about a bonus shows the route, including independent dispute resolution.
Is verification worth the hassle for free spins?
Advantages
Protects under-18s and stops people using others' identities
Means withdrawals shouldn't be held up by ID checks later
Confirms you're dealing with a casino that follows UK rules
Drawbacks
Can delay first play if documents are needed
Short claim windows can clash with document reviews
Requires sharing personal documents, so use licensed casinos only
Verification is part of every legitimate UK spins offer, so the real question is whether the offer itself is worth claiming. Compare offers on their terms with our guide to comparing free spins offers.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to verify my ID to use free spins?
Yes, at any casino licensed in Great Britain. Since 7 May 2019, operators must verify your age and identity, including your name, address and date of birth, before you can deposit or gamble, and the Gambling Commission said this covers free bets and bonuses. Many accounts are verified automatically through database checks, so you may not need to upload anything. If documents are needed, you'll be told which. Our page on whether you have to verify before a bonus covers the detail.
Can I get free spins without verification in the UK?
No, not from a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission. Verification before play is a licence condition, so any site advertising 'no ID' spins to British players is either misdescribing its offer or isn't licensed here. Unlicensed sites give you none of the UK protections, from fair terms to GAMSTOP and independent dispute resolution. It's safer to accept that verification is part of the process. Our explainer on casino bonuses without verification explains the risks in more detail.
What documents do casinos ask for to verify free spins accounts?
Usually photo ID and sometimes proof of address. The Gambling Commission lists passports, driving licences and household bills as typical documents, with a selfie in cases of suspected fraud. PlayOJO's help page names a passport, driving licence, ID card or utility bill, uploaded through its own tool rather than by email. Each casino sets its own document rules, so follow its help pages. The guide to verifying your casino account explains how to prepare clear uploads.
How long does free spins verification take?
Often seconds, if the automatic database check confirms your details. If documents are needed, it depends on the casino's review time and on how clear your documents are. PlayOJO says it aims to verify within 12 hours and asks you to contact support if you haven't heard within 48 hours. Coral and Ladbrokes don't publish a timing we can quote, so check their help centres. The page on how long casino verification takes covers typical delays.
Will my free spins expire while I'm being verified?
They might, which is why it's best to verify before you qualify. Coral gives 48 hours to accept its spins and 7 days to use them, and Ladbrokes needs each day's spins claimed before 23:59. If you've met an offer's condition but are still waiting on verification, contact support straight away, explain when you qualified and ask how the claim window will be handled. Keep a record of the conversation. Our guide to bonus expiry explains how deadlines usually work.
Can a casino ask for ID when I withdraw free spins winnings?
Only in limited circumstances. Since 2019, a casino can't make proof of age or identity a condition of withdrawing if it could reasonably have asked earlier, unless another law requires the check at that point. It can still carry out other checks, such as anti-money-laundering questions about the source of your funds. If you think a request is unfair, use the casino's complaints procedure. Our page on withdrawal rules sets out your rights when taking money out.
Why did my free spins verification fail?
Usually because the details on your account don't match what the databases or your documents show. A previous address, a misspelt name, a different date format or a blurry photo can all stop a check. Fix the details on your account, upload clearer documents and ask support what is missing. If the check flagged a self-exclusion, the casino shouldn't let you play, and that is the protection doing its job. Our explainer on why accounts get restricted covers related issues.
Is verification the same as an affordability check?
No. Identity verification confirms who you are and that you're 18 or over. Separately, since 28 February 2025, casinos must run a financial vulnerability check, looking at public records such as bankruptcies or county court judgments, when your deposits minus withdrawals pass £150 in a rolling 30 days. Credit-reference-based financial risk assessments were piloted but are not live, and the Commission says it has no plans for 'affordability checks'. The page on financial vulnerability checks explains the rule.
Do I need to verify before using free spins in demo mode?
Yes. Since May 2019, UK-licensed operators must age-verify customers before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games. That means demo slots are behind the same checks as real-money play. Demo play doesn't use your spins and its results don't carry over, so it's mainly useful for learning how a game works. Our page on whether free spins are the same as demo play explains the difference between the two.
Is it safe to upload ID to a casino for free spins?
It's as safe as the operator you send it to, so only upload documents to casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. Check the licence on the Commission's public register first, use the casino's own upload tool rather than email if that's what it asks for, and never send documents in response to an unsolicited message. A separate guide to checking a casino licence shows how to confirm who you're dealing with.
